Lauding Norm
In speaking with recruiting folks across the country yesterday, one thing I kept hearing was the recruiting effort put forth by UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow.
Part of is contract agreement was he would not do much recruiting, but the competitive side of Chow really came out this recruiting season.
I know during a four-day stretch his schedule included;
A trip to Hawaii, a return home for local recruiting, a trip to Utah and another trip to Hawaii.
That was his schedule from a Monday through Thursday night.

So Dohn, how is this different than any other high-profile football coach during recruiting season? Is this just Norm Chow doing the job he was hired to do? If so, why does that deserve praise in your precious blog space? Explain, please?
Love you Norm! Thanks!
I'm sure he feels it was all for not...
Old School, I guess you have trouble with reading comprehension. As Brian stated, Norm Chow has an agreement in his contract that said he wouldn't have to do much recuiting. So, no, he wasn't doing a job that he was hired to do, but went beyond what he was hired to do.
that's naught, al.
That is what makes Norm a quality guy. He underpromises and overdelivers. It's evidence of a humble guy who has a pride of ownership. Norm doesn't need UCLA it is the other way around. Yet although not obligated to recruit extensively he wants to compete and win and give more of himself than required. That is a great example of competitive spirit which should never be needed to be scribed in any contract.
Big difference in production when you want to do something rather than have to do something.
Brian, there is a rumor that CRN pulled Toma's scholarhsip offer. Any truth to this?
Crotch Sniffing Bruin, thanks for the explanation.
Now, maybe ol' Norm can start earning his pay next season by showing a little more creativity and success on offense. This past season was a joke for somebody who supposedly is a genius of an offensive coordinator. When UCLA had the ball, it was plain offensive. Or maybe that is too much to ask of "the competitive side" of Norm Chow that Dohn seems so much in love with.
Geez, Dohn, how much does Slick Rick pay you to put these horse droppings in this crummy blog anyways?
Norm Chow is an offensive genius, Pete Carroll's biggest mistake was letting him leave USC.
That being said, you're praising Norm for doing the basics of a job he's being paid seven figures to do.
And if you really think about it, you're praising a Hawaiian Mormon man for taking paid trips to Hawaii and Utah.
Let me break that down even more.
He's Hawaiian and was paid to go to Hawaii.
He's Mormon and was paid to go to Utah.
Old Troll,
Get a life. The only horse droppings on this blog are coming from your keyboard. Better get Traveler out of your bed and back in the stable before his trainer notices he's gone.
Sam Gilbert - I thought you died in the 80's :) Will your breakdown be on the SAT next year. I got one for you.
Petey is Cheatey and is paid to cheat
Petey runs "a worse la" and runs his recruiting tool under the guise of a "nonprofit"
Old school,
If this is such a crummy blog, why are you here?
Given the O-line & QB issues, not to mention losing the top WR and TE in the first game, I thought Chow did as well as could be reasonably expected.
As Dohn states, his contract says he wouldn't do much recruiting. However, he's doing the RIGHT THING and going beyond what he's paid to do. Laudable, no matter the line of work!
Old School = ONLYTHETRUTH/LJ
Panchito.
As long as those NC banners hang in Pauley, I shall live eternal :)
Old School, your use of name-calling has only confirmed the lack of maturity that you and several Trojan fans visiting this blog seem to exhibit. And as good as Norm Chow is, he was severely limited this past season by the talent he had to work with. Sort of like how the manager at your company would be so much more effective if he could get someone else besides you working for him.
And Sam Gilbert, you missed the point, too. He was NOT being paid to recruit, because he had an agreement in his contract that said he wouldn't have to.
CrouchingBruin raises an interesting question.
Why isn't Norm Chow required to recruit like just about every other OC in college football?
>> Why isn't Norm Chow required to recruit like just about every other OC in college football?
I'm thinking Rick Neuheisel threw it out as an enticement in order to sign him (although it's possible that Coach Chow originally requested it. Maybe it's possible for Brian to find out?). Coach Chow is 61 and has been coaching collegiately for over 30 years and I'm sure the traveling wears on him. Sam Gilbert almost makes it sound like Coach Chow's traveling around on vacation, but just look at the four days that he just spent flying: To Hawaii, back to LA the next day, to Utah the next, and then back to LA. I don't care how old you are, that would wear you out.
This just in...
Norm says thank you for all your kind words.
He says he'll cite your praise when he soon applies to another, more legitimate coaching job.

ROTFLMAO!!!
(That should get a "Best Comeback of the Week" award!)
Boy did those trips to Hawaii and Utah pay off, landing both Hasaik and Sua Filo. Go Norm Chow, Go Bruins!!!
Actually, Dohn is "praising Norm for doing the basics of a job he's being paid seven figures to do," by the Tennessee Titans.
