Su'a-Filo delay?

| | Comments (6) |

As the craziness of this recruiting season continues, one of the things I was hearing out of Utah today is Timpview (Provo) High offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo could delay his decision for a few days.
He is slated to make his announcement on ESPNU today, but the status of his high school coach, Louie Wong, could be a factor. Wong interviewed this week for a spot on Utah's coaching staff, but the Utes aren't expected to make a hire until the end the week.
Su'a-Filo is being recruited by the Bruins and Utah.

I think it's great that he's calling their bluff. Hopefully this means he'll fall into our hands.

That's great. I guess we can write this guy off. The old hire the HS coach trick. What surprises me, is how nefarious a HS coach could be to ride the coattails of his HS star player to get a job at a University. Also, how desperate could Utah be to comply? I hope Utah doesn't sell out for one HS kid.

Yeah Utah probably was leading him to believe that his high school coach would be at Utah, only to get his signature and turn the coach away. If that was there plans, I hope Sua'Filo does wait on signing and make Utah hire his coach.

Per http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3882360&name=West_Recruiting

A 2 p.m. ET, offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo (Provo, Utah./ Timpview) will make his choice and no recruit has been tougher to read this year.

Su'a-Filo took official visits to LSU, USC, Utah, BYU and UCLA and it wouldn't be surprising if he ended up at any of the five schools. I talked to the lineman last Friday and he said all five schools were still in the mix and he had no idea where he was going to go or even who his top three were.

Over the weekend, I talked with an in-state recruit and friend of Su'a-Filo who said he thought Utah and UCLA were the leaders. Utah received the last in-home visit on Saturday and if I had to guess, and it would be an absolute guess, I would bet on the Utes right now.

Adding further intrigue to his decision, the Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that Su'a-Filo might not sign tomorrow and could wait to see if his head coach at Timpview, Louis Wong, gets the offensive line position at Utah.

Maybe you guys have it wrong. Maybe the kid is smart, real smart. He holds out long enough to get his high school coach a better job, a way to pay him back if you will, and then once the coach has landed the new job he signs with UCLA.

If he signs with UCLA now there's probably no chance that the coach gets a new job.

Smart. Very Smart.
