Answers, Part VIII

Here is the eighth set:

What’s the benefit of snapping under center versus the shotgun? Are there any? Several teams, pro and college, seem to be going gun-only.
It is much easier to have a power running game and not be as predictable when the quarterback is under center.

Does it appear that UCLA finally has a kicker with sufficient leg strength to get kickoffs into the endzone on a consistent basis?
No. I think it will be an issue all season.

With the large number of recruits expected to attend the final scrimage at the Rose Bowl, is it reasonable to anticipate that some commitments could well be forthcoming this weekend?
I don’t think it is reasonable to think that. I am not sure how hard UCLA is going to push for commits at the game. If I remember correctly, Sheldon Price committed at the spring game last season, but I am not anticipating any. However, if UCLA gets one or more, I will write about it and blog about it.

You’ve pointed out HS recruits have been showing up to UCLA’s practices (thank you). Are you seeing a noticeable increase in numbers and quality of recruits who stop by vs. last year?
No, it’s the same every year, even during Dorrell’s years. Kids want to check out schools and different practices.

Can you ask R N if he or the department will ever do anything to our bland looking completely white away jerseys.
I will ask him during the offseason, and if he says anything worthy of publishing, I will do it.

Does Coach Bullough or Neuheisel have any experience running a team using a 3-4 defensive alignment? Have they ever thought of using one at Ucla since we seem to be short on Def Tackles?
I don’t know if they do, but I know Bullough was brought onto the staff by former defensive coordinator DeWyane Walker because of a similar defensive style and philosophy. And Walker was a 4-3 guy. I’m not sure if somewhere along the way Neuheisel or Bullough were with 3-4 teams, but they are 4-3 guys.

I know we can’t dig much deeper in Pauley because of the water table. Is there any way we can build up, i.e. raising the court and making the new Pauley a taller structure? Even if it means tearing it down?
First of all, it is not getting torn down. Second, the plan isn’t to raise the court.

Is there any likelihood Coach Neuheisel will cut any scholarship players to make room for the incoming class? Is there anyone you think is in jeopardy of losing their scholarship?
Yes, there is a chance some of the scholarship players will get cut, but I don’t feel comfortable naming them. I would rather wait for it to happen before I report it. However, it could come in the form of a transfer, a medical retirement or someone saying they were done playing football.
