Saturday's scrimmage rewind, Part I
After getting a chance to watch the film, UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel commented about some things that stood out in Saturday's scrimmage.
"I think Andrew Abbott is doing a great job at corner and can help us,'' Neuheisel said. "I think Tony Dye is doing a great job at the safety position. I think he can play anywhere back there and create some competition in the back end. E.J. Woods is coming along. Datone Jones is becoming a real force.
"I love our linebackers - Reggie Carter, Akeem Ayers and Kyle Bosworth. They look the part and are playing well. Jerzy Siewierski is playing well. Brian Price is obviously difficult for us to block."

Who is Andrew Abbott? Never heard of him
Seen pics of him on BruinsNation. Sticks like glue on the receivers. Bigger poser: Where the heck is Larrimore?
We are going to have a fierce front 7 on D, and hopefully that is including Warner
I think the secondary will be just as good no matter who they put with ATV and Moore. I had to look up Abbott - #26 5-10/174 CB RS FR Long Beach, CA (Mater Dei)
The only problem with the defense this year may be how much time the offense makes them spend on the field. If the O can move the ball with some sustained drives giving the D some rest, I think the D could be pretty good in 2009. On the other hand, if the O goes 3 and out all game long, the D will struggle in the late 3rd and 4th quarters.
the Defense should be good like UB said and IF no one on the DL gets hurts, especially DT where we are thin as of now.
I saw Abbot out there. He actually does look pretty good. I'm kind of excited to see him more in the future and see how he progresses. His play really pops, out on the practice field. He also looks heavier than 174. I would put him closer to 185 or so. He looks pretty physical. And man do the LB's look bigger and meaner, especially Sloan. Next year's front seven will be a force to be reckoned with.
I tell you what with the size, number, and athleticism of the LB's and the lack of DT depth, I would start considering a 3-4D. Ayers will be a highly sought after 3-4 OLB in the NFL. Chinonso Anyanwu will have a spot to play at OLB. Sloan could be the "true MLB" of the 2 inside guys while allowing Carter to do his thing. Keep in mind I don't think we should always be in a 3-4, but that we should be in it more often.
I wish Carter could play at WLB in our normal 4-3, but Ayers is doing so well there.
Also, I think the DE's we have right now are pretty big and can probably 2 gap pretty well. Although I really like Datone Jones off the edge.
Andrew Abbott is a 2nd year walkon DB from Mater Dei. As I recall, DWalk thought pretty highly of him.
