Answers, Part VII
Here is the seventh set:
Do you sense the football coaching staff feels it may be difficult living up to people's expectations this season?
It depends what the expectations are. I think the staff's first concern is to be bowl eligible, and anything beyond that will be gravy. If folks are expecting nine or 10 wins, than the staff will likely have loads of trouble meeting those expecations.
I'm sure that this is a popular question, but with Jrue Holiday expected to be a top 10 or lottery pick, why hasn't he hired an agent yet? Isn't he considering the recruiting damage he's creating for UCLA?
Because teams can pay for him to workout, so if he gets seriously injured during workouts, he can return to school next season. And what recruiting damage is he doing? There are no guards out there for UCLA to sign for next season.
It seems that Jrue Holiday is shooting up the draft boards. My Sacramento Kings are brining him in for a workout(I'd LOVE to have him in Sac) and Doug Gottlieb of ESPN has him going to the Thunder. What do u think? He's gone isn't he?
I have no idea where he is going and there are plenty of workouts for him to still take part in, but as I've maintained from the beginning, I believe he is not coming back to UCLA.
Obviously Randall Carroll and Sheldon Price are keeping up with track during the offseason. I am curious, do you have any info on what lineman like Su'a Filo, Capella, Abele, and Hasiak are up to this time of year?
I do not have any information on them. I will check and if there is something there, I will post it during the week.
After finally seeing what UCLA has settled on re: Pauley and hearing both sides for and against this endeavor, what is YOUR opinion about the committee's plans? Too expensive? Do you agree with everything Bergman said? with what UCLA responded with?
I don't agree with everything Bergman said, but I understand his concerns. And I thought UCLA's response was predictable. But, in all honesty, I think UCLA should build another arena. I am a traditionalist, and I love the old buildings, but Pauley is so bad, it doesn't make sense to me to fix it. However, I know why they are fixing it rather than tear it down. It is because someone highly influential and revered wants it to remain standing.
Do you think the reporting by Yahoo! on the NCAA violations investigation is a biased witch hunt like our best buds across town are claiming?
I don't believe in witch hunts if there is wrong-doing involved. If there is wrong-doing involved, anything is fair game.
It seems like CRN got some speedsters in this class. Do you think that Chow will open up the passing game and design some plays that takes advantage of our speed?
Well, it depends on three things. First, can the receivers get off the line of scrimmage? Second, will the line protect long enough? Third, will the quarterback throw the ball deep?
Plays were in last year to throw the ball deep, but all three of the above mentioned problems took place often, and curtailed the deep passing game.
With all his scorers gone where does Howland go to get the points and who does he go to with 2 minutes to play and the game on the line??
My guess is Anderson, Lee and Dragovic will need to do a lot of scoring, and I have no idea who gets the last shot in a tight game. I don't think Howland knows, so how would I? That is something that has to develop.

Wow... I take that to mean Coach Wooden is wants to preserve Pauley... if that is the case, they should just wait him out. It may be a little cold to say, but his influence won't be felt for too much longer.
Classy.
I knew this. I'm glad we agree with regards to Pauley Brian. Unfortunately, the great coach Wooden is a huge barrier to keeping Pauley. He shouldn't keep UCLA hostage like this. His interest should be what is best for UCLA and not ego or nostalgia. What he did for UCLA is great, but no one person is great than the University. No one person. As a consolation to Wooden and other traditionalists, why not keep the old crappy decrepit Pauley as a practice, IM, Gymnastics, Volleyball, and or Women's BB facility and build a new Arena? That there is no room on campus for it is a bunch of BS. There is undeveloped acreage everywhere on campus. Why not keep Pauley where it is and build a new Arena on the IM field or elsewhere?
This is really so stupid and shows how illogical the dumb administrators at UCLA are. Too much BS beauracracy, just like when I went to school there. So, we should make a $185 million dollar decision based on the wishes of a revered 99 year old man? With all due respect to John Wooden and his family, but this is ludicrous. I don't know any corporations in America that would do the same. This just proves why Private institutions are so much more efficient than public ones. I hate to say it, but it's true. I will not give a single dime to this project so long as the renovation plan exists. This may be one of the reasons that their fund raising efforts have disappointed. I suggest we all do the same. If we band together, the administration will have to listen to the money.
Sometimes I wish Brian can pull a Jim Rome. When Jim gets fed up with the clones who send triple U's (Unfunny, Uninspired, Unreadable) email/text, he just BLOCKS that guy. *Insert sound clip BLOCKKEDDD! BLOCCKED!*
This..in my opinion deserves a BLOCK
"if that is the case, they should just wait him out. It may be a little cold to say, but his influence won't be felt for too much longer."
"Undeveloped acreage everywhere on campus"? What, are you proposing a basketball arena to replace the Sculpture Garden?
Amazing how quickly some of you attack.
Dohn was purposely vague in his comments, making no mention of names, and yet many of you automatically assumed that the Wooden was at fault.
Man, have you no institutional memory? UCLA Basketball owes its success to Wooden. All of it. Show some respect. The man won TEN national championships. How many has the program won since his retirement? One.
As a Laker fan, I would love nothing better than to see the Queens draft Holiday at #4.
Hey UCLA9404,
Wooden is great, but I don't think UCLA should throw away $185 mill and the future basketball program in honor of him. That is what we are talking about here... then next ten nat. championships... not the last ten. If UCLA wants to keep recruiting top talent it needs the facilities. A few more crappy seats, a couple toilets, and a couple more places to buy overpriced food just won't do it.
