Carter, Johnson given release

| | Comments (41) |

Raymond Carter and Dominique Johnson were given releases by UCLA to transfer to another school.
"Raymond told me he loves UCLA but feels it is best for him to continue his career elsewhere. Dominique feels it's in his family's best interests to relocate so they can be with him while he goes to school and plays football," Rick Neuheisel said in a release. "We certainly wish them well and will do whatever we can to help them find another school."
That's three now as Aundre Dean was given his release, too.

Any chance they'll end up in Minnesota? Never say never. :)

Jill - any idea where all three are considering?
SDSU is perfect for Carter.

Decent post Jill, which is a big step up.

Heard Dean was on the fence - any updates on his status?

Guys I have a theoretical idea for our offensive backfield... Let’s say we put Ramirez at starting tailback, let Franklin be the backup and Knox share time in there as well. Meanwhile, (and this sounds a little out there) we redshirt Coleman for later conversion to fullback. With our current fullback situation of Moline and Theriot being seniors and Tobi Umodu a junior, it would make sense to have him the season after the upcoming one. I know the incoming freshman Jayson Allmond is labeled as a fullback, but from what I have seen he might become a defensive tackle. With Coleman's strength and our situation at tailback, this seems a logical solution to a future lack of personnel at fullback. Crazy as it may sound, it just might work. Plus with Dean and Carter considering transferring, there will be more reps to be shared among the tailbacks so we can develop people who actually have the ability to play. No offense to Dean and Carter, but they just didn’t seem to be quite up to the level of the other backs.

It doesn't seem like Carter's the same player/talent as before he tore up his knee. And it didn't look like he was doing anything that made any of us think that he was going to be a good player. Maybe by time he's a senior he'd regain some of that, but by then Neuheisel will have brought in other backs just as good if not better. That's the cost of doing business.

I actually kind of like your idea Ryan, I would like it even more if we could get Dean to stick around now that carter is gone. I hope he is considering staying, we reall only have 4 rb's if he and carter bounce.

Seems to me that a degree that says UCLA on it would be perfect. If this guy can't break into the UCLA lineup then it's likely he will make his living on what he learned in the classroom, not on the football field.

Why anyone that isn't going to make a living at professional football would transfer out of UCLA is beyond me. Giving up golden credentials is not exactly smart.

Why is it so hard for some of you guys to grasp that some or all of these guys are likely being asked (or strongly encouraged) to leave so that we can comply with the scholarship limits in the fall? There will need to be about 4 more than the 3 who have announced.

Maybe he hasn't giving up on making it to the League. That being said, SDSU did have more players drafted this year than UCLA.

When did Dominique Johnson become a RB?? He's been a WR for the last two years in the games I've watched...

Yes, Anon is correct Rick is making room for the incoming guys. Jill how many more does Rick need to run off?

Ryan-

I believe the coaching staff will put the best players on the field to put us in a position to win this year. Who knows what may happen what will happen the rest of this off-season, this season, next off-season in terms of injuries and player development and how it will impact our roster next year?

Ryan said:

Bruins '05-
that is kind of a copout answer. Obviously the coaches will put the best players out there. But when somebody presents an alternate solution to a potential issue they don't want to hear "well, its up to the coaches". I'm not trying to break balls, but give some real feedback man.

This is just the Begining....
High school players will read Brigham Harwell story and then not commit to UCLA. That means good talent will never be discoverd and millions of dollars will be lost.
Get Harwell on a NFL TEAM period.

APR scores released, UCLA Football is ranked #5

1. Stanford: 984
2. California: 970
3. USC: 956
4. Washington: 954
5. UCLA: 948
6. Arizona State: 945
7. Oregon: 935
8. Oregon State: 930
9. Arizona: 924
10. Washington State: 918

Let's see: In the last few weeks no Buins were selected in the NFL Draft; UCLA lost the Gaunlet 2 years in a row to USC; and now the Bruins fall behind USC in APR.

Punting is winning!

i believe she is referring to Dean and Carter as the two running backs leaving. I love Johnson's athleticism but the guy admits that he doesn't work hard, this team can't have guys like that. That one handed catch against USC two years ago was pretty sweet though.

I know it's not true but I like to pretend VB is a U$C troll trying to make Bruins look bad.

Jill,

Do you know what you mean when you write "two more running backs leave the crowded backifield(she misspelled 'backfield' not me)?" What other RB left the program? Man, you're on a roll with these posts. I'm sure when all is said and done, and when Dohn returns, you'll have a newfound sense of respect for what he does.

Bruin '05 Author Profile Page said:

Well, I'm just being cautious here, Ryan. We beat up on Jill pretty bad for a post on a "what-if" scenario.

I talked to a UCLA football player yesterday and was told Coach N. told these players they likely would not get much PT and that these players were free. It's advantageous for UCLA because it opens up scholarships for Coach N's own recruits. Apparently the system under Coach Chow is different and a lot of these players don't have the tools (i.e. blocking for running backs in chow's schemes) to run the plays and will not likely get much PT, so it's best for both parties if those players leave.

Both VB and Jill Painter need to leave this blog. Just let it go on hiatus until Dohn returns.

You refer to us as "sexist pigs" and play the gender-card because you and Jill are women. No other reason. Our complaints with Jill have nothing to do with her gender but rather with her work (or lack thereof).

VB,
After years of taking the wrath of the suduko playing Dorrell loving softie Bruin fans on this blog that told me I am not a True Bruin fan (hence the name)because I expected better than the mediocre football we were forced to watch, its good to know that someone here is cut out of the same fan mold as I am. The only thing that screws up this blog is the trolls that feel its necessary to post a thoughtless comment. Restart the sign-in and the trolls will go away. I may have to bring some Bacon wrapped artichoke hearts from my (unnamed) tailgate to the UBTA to enjoy with True Bruin fans!
BTW, while I would stop short of calling the kid a looser, Johnson is a lax kid
