Answers, Part V

Here is the fifth set:

If u were Neuheisel, and u had to drop four scholarships from the team as it is today, who would u eliminate? This potential situation is barring academic casualties and greyshirting of recruits .
Man, I can think of plenty of players but I think that would be unfair to list them by name. However, just look at guys who will be in their fourth year of the program and have never or barely made it onto the field. That would be a good start.

Besides winning what does UCLA as a football program need to do to effectually attract athletes? Does UCLA need to start recruiting transcripts?
Winning is a good start, and doing a better job recruiting the prime athlete who also has good transcripts. That, or lower the academic requirements in exchange for better players. But, to some extent, UCLA already recruits transcripts.

What is your pick on who will win the crab count for the Ophilio crab season?
It’s an unfair contest because it is based on quotas, so the outcome is pre-determined. Nevertheless, I’m going with Captain Phil, and man, is it great to have him back, or what?

Do you feel like Fullback Trevor Theriot is being used less than he should be? “Sources” from other sites say he is the best athlete on the field, with a great combo of size, speed and smarts. More touches for the big fella?
Well, let’s put it this way. If what the other sites say is accurate, then the offensive coaches at UCLA have no idea what they are doing, no clue on how to evaluate and use talent and lack a basic understanding of everything football related.

I know the coaching staff is taking its time and building relationships, but what do you make of us having zero recruits (FB) so far. Seems almost every school has at least one but us.
If it’s any consolation, at this time last week UCLA had one commitment, until Paul Richardson pulled it back. I don’t think it is a big deal. The key is getting good players, and right now UCLA is recruiting some really good players. If they don’t have any commitments in October, that will be another issue.

I know you’re not a clairvoyant, but after seeing Prince in Spring practice, do you think he has a realistic chance of performing at a top tier pac 10 qb this year? Upper half? A lot depends on the line i know.
No, I don’t, and I think it is unfair to expect him to be a top tier quarterback this season. He hasn’t played in two years, is behind a questionable offensive line and is a red-shirt freshman. It could be a few seasons before he really becomes a top tier quarterback.

Do you ever answer your e-mail? I’ve sent several.
I try to answer them all, if there are questions. However, sometimes I overlook a few because of the shear volume.

What did you think of Steve Sloan’s performance last year? Do think Larimore or Golper have a shot at unseating him as Carter’s back-up / next year’s starter at MLB?
I was disappointed in Sloan’s play-making ability. He was playing middle linebacker, a spot where a guy should wrack up tackles, and he did not. However, I was told he put the defense in the right position most times, and the tackling part will come. As for Larimore or Golper unseating Sloan, I don’t see that happening.
