Afflalo, Mata-Real sightings

| | Comments (9) |

Former UCLA hoopsters Arron Afflalo and Lorenzo Mata-Real were on campus yesterday to play pickup games and stay in shape.
Afflalo, who is with the Detroit Pistons, said he will be on campus to work out four times a week during the summer.
Mata-Real, who played in Mexico last year, said he is going to play with the Chicago Bulls summer team. He will report July 9, but will be at UCLA to keep sharp and work out.

Brian - any chance you could do a quick interview with Mata to let the Bruin Nation know how he's doing? I'm sure he's in most everyone's top 5 favorite Bruins.

Guess the bball freshman have all made it to campus. From Ben Howland's Twitter: "The Freshmen love it here already. What a great group! It was a lot of fun to sit with all of them together this morning before class."

Sounds good! I saw AA in Ackerman a couple days ago, so this makes sense. I hope they give him more PT in Detroit.

I love lomata, but keep him the heck away from our players, we already have too many injuries.

AA and LMR...two TRUE Bruins!

I ran into Mata-Real about a month ago at CSULB. I was there for a fashion show put on by the design students and he was too (presumably to see a girl; I don't think he was there for the show!). I squealed like a preteen Hannah Montana fan when I saw him. Mata-Real said his playing days in Mexico ended when he broke his leg. I told him how much we missed his warrior mentality and spirit this last season and took some pics with him. Great guy.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
