Going Deep with Randall Carroll
Freshman wideout Randall Carroll (Cathedral High) has been one of the guys to watch during the first two days. His speed had Coach Rick Neuheisel talking, but it's his hands that has Carroll talking.
"I'm running a lot more simple routes, routes that Terrence Austin and everybody else get to run," Carroll said. "Not just the deep ball. Me out here showing my hands, it's proving I can do it out on the field."
Carroll's speed has been well-documented: He was ranked as the No. 4 athlete by Rivals.com and was on several top-100 lists.
Along with fellow incoming freshman Ricky Marvray (Centennial High), UCLA has a pair of speedy newcomers...
"They are what they thought they were; they really are talented," Neuheisel said. "Randall is nursing a little bit of a hip flexor injury so we'll have to nurse him a little bit, but he's a better pass-catcher than I think he was given credit for. He's an electric player. Ricky Marvray is also a guy who's got a lot of juice. I think they're both going to play here, and play a lot.
"I'd be shocked if they're not exceptional players."
They certainly have someone to look up to.
Austin has taken an active approach in his mentoring of the two young wide receivers.
"I follow Terrence a lot," Carroll said. "I look up to that guy. He runs great routes and everything. He practices like it's the NFL out here all the time. I'm using him as an example. Hopefully, I'll get to be one of those great receivers."

What a turnaround. The future of this blog looked pretty bleak just a few days ago. But now it's looking like it may be as good as it ever was, maybe better.
