Offering many thanks, and some sadness
I began covering UCLA in the summer of 2003, and in the last six years I made some great friends, ticked off some folks and had a bevy of wonderful experiences.
With a lot of excitement looking ahead and some sadness, for what I am leaving behind, I wanted to let everyone know I am leaving the Daily News. My family and I are moving back to New Jersey.
Within the next week and for those interested, I will get word out a about my new gig, which is not UCLA related. Right now is not the correct timing for me to say what it is.
I want to thank everyone for all the great times I had covering UCLA, and the incredible success of this blog. The experiences I had covering UCLA are things I will always remember.
The Daily News has been great to me and my family, and I wish it nothing but success in the future. I also know the Daily News will continue to treat UCLA, and the blog, with the utmost importance.

Thank you Brian and good luck!
Good Luck Dohn enjoyed the insight and info!
aww man. best of luck in your future endeavors brian. your coverage of ucla sports was the absolute best around. we all appreciate the work that you put in and it definitely showed in the quality of your journalism.
Wow.... A shocker. Best of luck Brian!
You did a great job while you were here. Good luck back in NJ! You will be missed.
Really sorry to hear that you are leaving, but family comes first. I always enjoyed reading this blog for your great info. Hopefully the Daily News will continue the blog. Doubt that it will be as good without your great inside info. Best of luck. God Bless you and your family.
Good luck and congratulations. I looked forward to reading your blog and stories on almost a daily basis. A true professional who always told it like it was. Thank you for your honesty, integrity, hard work, dedication, and talents. You will be severely missed.
Say it isn't so! I wish it was April 1st so that this could be an April Fool's joke. You've done an amazing job with the blog and you'll be sorely missed. I hope the next guy (or girl) does almost as good a job as you with the blog.
I wish you nothing but the best of luck in your new gig.
Sad to hear you're leaving. Best of luck with your future endeavors. How about one last Q&A for old time's sake?
thanks for your hard work Mr.Dohn we'll miss you
Brian,
Thanks for all of your hard work. You have given us so much information, insight, and most of all, a community to discuss our favorite school.
You have endeared yourself to all of us. Your unbiased reporting was incredibly helpful to get a better understanding of where are teams really were, and how we were progressing.
We wish you the best of luck at your new job. Hopefully we will see you in the flesh for a UCLA vs Rutgers football game in the next few years.
All the very best from this old coach, Brian. As I always told my players after each game: "You played hard, done good."
Thank you, Brian. I've enjoyed your work on the blog and wish you and your family the best in your future endeavors.
God bless you and yours,
Johnny Angel
Wow, what am I going to do to get my daily dose of all things Bruin? You did a terrific job where many of us looked forward to your daily updates. But here's to bigger and better things. Best of luck, health and happiness in your future endeavors.
at practices and chatting with you. My most sincere thanks for a great job well done and best wishes in your new endeavor.
Best of luck to you Brian. You set the bar very high with your coverage.
Thank you so much Brian! Your coverage of UCLA has been second to none! You will be missed greatly!
Best of luck to you back east Dohn!
Dohn, you're the best. Keep up the good work at your new job.
=(
I'm sorry to hear this.
Good luck! and Go Bruins!
Total BUMMER
Brian The nice thing about is that you were not a homer with this blog. Nice job and best of luck going back home and now you get to have real Pizza. To but it wasn't wolf because he needs to take some lessons from the real Blog Guy.
I love you Brian! Many thanks! I know UCLA coverage will NEVER be the same.
Let me just say, in a few short words, that all games must come to an end. We have finally reached the end of the Fourth Quarter, the final whistle has blown, and the game is now over. Time to head to the locker room and go home. Enjoy the NJ Taylor Ham and grease trucks.
So it is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we must say goodbye. You are a true wordsmith, a poet journalist of the highest caliber. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
Now would also be a good time for a goodbye haiku by some of the resident poets of this blog and maybe some of Yoda's wisom.
Best Wishes,
LAWYER JOHN
P.S. Any chance that you can take Scott Wolf with you?
I had a bad feeling for a few weeks now that something was up. You came back from vacation and didn't want to do the weekly questions.
Leaving for Rutgers perhaps? More money and family. Only reason I can think of for leaving beautiful Southern CA.
Beat wishes. I knew somebody as talented and dedicated as you wouldn't last at the Daily News. I will miss your facts based reporting and will now be relagated to a lower standard. A sad day for Bruin fans everywhere.
NOOOOOOO!!!!!
Good luck Dohn - great blog. You will be missed.
Thanks B Dohn. I really appreciate your insight over the past few years.
Brian - thanks for all your efforts in supporting us Bruin fans, with your blog, your game-time chat rooms, your ten-questions with the UCLA student-athletes, and your other news items.
Best of luck in your future endeavors, and go Scarlet Knights (except when they play the Bruins in a few years!).
Keep wearing your crocs!
Brian, you will be missed more than you know. Like I tell my husband, I'm hard on you because I love you so much; if I didn't care, I wouldn't bother. Same goes for you Brian. I know you occasionally got a hard time from us, but it was always with love. :-) Man, what's next for this blog? I'm kinda scared because no one could touch Brian. Gotta agree with BruinFaithful, I also got the feeling something was up. Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Thank you, Brian, for your awesome reporting. I think I speak for many when I say it will be SEVERELY missed. Good luck!
Brian,
This is a terrible blow to LA college sports fans. You will be missed! Best of luck back east and THANKS.
Brian,
There is only one other site I go to for all things UCLA.
You have done a fantastic job on covering the Bruins and giving us inside information. You have been fair and very diligent in providing UCLA fans great information.
I will certainly miss your coverage.
I want to wish you and your family well in your new chapter.
I was going to say to take Wolfie with you also, but I might enjoy seeing him defend suc and himself (for his lack of investigative reporting) when the NCAA finally comes down against suc.
Thanks again and take care.
Thanks for all of your work over the years on the UCLA blog. Your blog had become one of my favorite sites for Bruin info. You will be sorely missed and I can only hope whoever replaces you will come close to what you have already achieved.
Best of luck to you and your family in New Jersey.
Brian,
You did a great job covering the Bruins and your reporting, blog updates, and 'Deadliest Catch' opinions (however little I actually know of the show) will be missed as bright portions of my days. Best of luck.
Best of Luck as you move forward with your career. It is always nice to move home and I am sure your family will appreciate your return.
You will be missed.
seriously...wow. but what can we do but wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. take it easy man
btw: you're gonna miss this so cal weather for sure.
Brian,
I had a bad feeling when your posts weren't forthcoming that something bad was happening to this blog.
I can only say thanks for your expert reporting, hard work and honest commentary. You will be missed, but our loss is someone else's gain.
I am certain that your talent will pay off in your future endeavors. You are a winner-don't forget that.
SB
Brian, thanks for the many hours you sacrificed to maintain this blog and make it so successful. Best of luck to you and your family in your new venture.
this absolutely sucks. The Daily News will not find anyone to fill your shoes. Your sources were impeccable, your reports were objective and written with thought.
Bad day for the Bruin community.
Nix, the Rutgers job speculation. I now remember you saying that you never wanted to cover your Alma Mater. You have always said that you loved journalism. Therefore, I assume your next job will be in the same line of work.
thank you so much for all your work dohn. i really have appreciated all of the great scoop you deal
Would you stay if everyone stopped bugging you about the Q&A?
Dohn, Thanks for all your time, effort, and patience. Good luck to you and your family. Can you give us any information on what to expect in the future for Bruin coverage and this blog?
This is a great loss to Bruin fans, but thank you for your amazing coverage and dedication. You will be dearly missed.
Best of luck on your new chapter. Whoever gets you next are lucky!
you have done a great job Dohn, but it was really sad to see the poor effort you put in the past couple weeks. Just because you are leaving a job doesnt mean you should not give your current job your all.
Sad day in blog world
Wishing you and yours the best
Thanks for the great work
I would also like to add the opinion to the Daily News staff that I would be against Scott Wolf covering this blog as a replacement. I think the Inside USC blog contains a lot of drivel, very little information, and reads more like a Perez Hilton website. I prefer the Daily News find someone that desires to run this blog much like Brian did, and please know that whoever takes this position has a lot to live up to.
We will have to remember to be nice...
Brian, you became an authority on Bruins sports for all us UCLA fans. Thank you for going out of your way to bring breaking news for all us Bruin fans. We will miss your work!
Here's hoping Brian is going to help smooth the transition out. Introducing his replacement to his sources and those he has built relationships with over the years.
Brian,
I hope you, your wife and children truly are blessed upon your return to your home state. What you did with this blog and the relationships that we established with you and other posters will be sorely missed. The in-game chats were unbelievable. Since I have serious doubts that anyone can follow in your footsteps with your sources, updates before anyone else and evaluation of talent, I was wondering if anyone out there could help me out with a question I am pondering:Which site is better to subscribe to, BRO or Bruinblitz? I think its time to bite the bullet if I want to receive info that approaches the quality that Dohn has given us.
Scott Wolf wouldn't take on an extra blog. It would keep him from focusing on his favorite hobby, taunting Pete Carroll.
...and we know it won't be Jill or Ramona to take over after what happened last time.
Hi Brian,
Thank you for doing an unparalleled job covering UCLA sports. I am embarassed to admit how many times a day I've checked your blog. I truly appreciate your dedication, even-handedness and effort. I'll really miss the fantastic work you do and UCLA fans have lost a tremendous media resource.
Good luck in all of your future endeavors. And thanks again.
This seems like some bad dream. Well all good things come to an end. I wish the best for you!!!
May God Bless you and your family...now what am i gonna do everyday. I followed this blog religiously
I truly am sad that you are leaving. You go above and beyond what is expected of you day in and day out and it had made being a Bruin fan that much easier. I hope the fans at your new gig appreciates you as much as we (at least, most of us) did here in LA. Good luck and take care!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Come back! Come back you #*%!$#%! Come back! Just kidding, good riddance! ;) We'll miss you.
Bummer for UCLA fans---Good Luck to ya!!
Dohn, thanks so much for covering UCLA! Youre a true professional. I, along with bruinnation, will miss you greatly. Best of luck and you will always be part of the Bruin family.
Hey Dohn, thanks for all the great UCLA coverage over the years, it's a shame you're leaving, best of luck to you
Great, what the heck am I supposed to do while I'm at work now????
you are the best brian. this blog will never be the same
Brian,
Loved reading your stuff, and enjoyed watching you "work it" at the Rose Bowl. The best of luck to you- you will be missed.
Lisa Horne (from FOXsports.com)
thanks for all that u did. it was more than ucla sports. yes, because of this blog i grew a deeper passion for what i loved, ucla basketball and football, but more than that, it was something positive i looked forward to everyday and was a bright spot in the daily negativity of our lives.
best wishes to you brian, may God be with u, ur family, and ur new endeavors.
Mr. Dohn,
Thank you for the great job! No one can do it like you, you were very fair, and added your own personal touch! Thank you for all the extra things you did for this blog. Best of Luck!
Thanks for all the hard work. Up yer Irons!
Say it aint so!
You will be terribly missed.
The Great Dohn Leaving
Many Will Try Not Shed Tears
Thanks for Memories
Wow
What a shocker! Sucks youre leaving us Dohn. Seriously this was the best site to get Bruin Info. :(
You will be missed. Best of Luck to you and your family.
No More Rose Bowl Food
Just Taylor Ham and Grease Truck
Dohn Deserves The Best
Thank you Mr. Dohn
Hey Brian,
Thanks for the great job, I just graduated from UCLA and enjoyed reading your blog for the last 4 years. Best of luck in Jersey.
Tristan
Thanks for all your fine journalism. What will we do without you??????
You will be missed. Good luck.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Brian. YOU DID A GREAT JOB.
Now I'm just sad. Wish you all the best Brian
Oh no! Best. UCLA News Source. Ever. Our loss is New Jersey's gain - on behalf of Bruin fans, many MANY thanks for your hard work and professionalism over these 6 years Brian!
I guess this means we'll never find out the real cause of the Great Branden Warner Mystery... :)
I visited your blog more then I checked espn.com and that's saying a lot. I've been going to your site every time every day I've turned on the laptop or the blackberry for the last 2 years. I'm sad to see you go but good luck to you Brian. You will be missed and whoever takes your place will have huge shoes to fill.
Say it ain't so Brian! Your blog literally changed the way I read the internet. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the way you covered our beloved Bruins. I think there is a reason why no other sites (paid or unpaid) out there can compare to your blog when it comes to covering UCLA athletics. Your objectivity, insight and respect for the student-athletes was second to none! What the hell am I going to do with my man-crush now??? "I wish I knew how to quit you."
Dohn, you will be sadly missed. The success of this blog is 100% your effort, and you have set a very high bar. Best wishes in your new endeavor, we know you will now bleed just a little bit of PowderKeg Blue.
Sorry to see you go. Best of luck with your new gig.
Thanks for everything Brian.
We all must do what is best for us and our family. Take good care Brian, I enjoyed your coverage of my BRUINS. You will be getting back just in time to buy some new warm clothes before the cold sets in.
The very best to you and your family
APRIL FOOLS RIGHT??????????
I feel like i got kicked in the balls with steel toe boots!!!!
You'll be missed sorely Brian.
Good luck to you and your family.
TO DAILY NEWS "PLEASE FIND US SOMEONE WHO TAKE SUCH PRIDE IN HIS REPORTING AND BLOG LIKE BRIAN DID."
Regards,
Eric T.
oh man this is the worst news i've heard today, for us ucla fans that is. the days are going to get boring more often now Dohn is not around. if there's ever such thing as an irreplaceable person in the ucla sports news world, Dohn comes as close as anyone i can think of. thanks for the great work! a final toast to you and best wishes in all your future endeavors.
Objective, fair he
was, integrity always
Dohn will be missed
Good luck Brian, many thanks for your contributions to our understanding of the many aspects of Bruins sports.
Best, Tim S
Best of Luck from the Faux VB Posse
Wow, how sad. Thanks for everything Brian. You covered UCLA so well! You will be missed by the UCLA fans! Good luck in your new gig!
Best of luck! Thanks for your hard work.
Brian, This is the only website I made sure to check every single day, and most days I checked it 3 or 4 times. Your posts had outstanding information that both casual and hard core Bruin fans would enjoy. This is truly a sad day for me -- now there is no "must see" website. Best of luck to you and your family.
Sorry to see you go......you have to do whats right for you and your family....been a great ride.."MAY GOD BE WITH YOU"
Wow, shocker! Best of luck to you and your family. I will miss your Ucla Blog as will many many Bruin fans, who thirst, as I do, for minute by minute updates on all things pertaining to Ucla sports, mostly football and basketball.
You've done a wonderful job covering Ucla. Thank you for making this blog the best source of info for Ucla fans.
dohn, thank you for all your hard work on behalf of us die hard bruin fans. you were passionate about your work and it showed in the product. i only hope the new dohn is half as good as you were on bruin scoop.
now i hope we can repay you for your hard work covering ucla with 2 wins in our football home and home with the scarlet knights!
good luck!
Brian, your insight and analysis will undoubtedly be missed. Thank you so much for your contribution to UCLA.
Brian,
I thank you for the time and effort you placed into your constant coverage.
To me, you genuinely represent the ideals of UCLA as an institution. Honest, and presenting all the facts to the best of your ability.
I hope that your memories of BRUINS is favorable. And I hope that you have created positive memories to carry with you in your future endeavors. And hopefully you can root for the Blue and Gold, when they're NOT playing Rutgers.
All the best,
Rumor has it that Dohn has been hired to ghost write Karl Dorrell's autobiography, with a tentative working title of "Football 101."
j/k
Good luck, Brian, and thanks for (for the most part) putting up with us.
Thanks for all your hard work over the years. You will be missed
With your hard work and commitment to this blog, you've set a remarkable standard of excellence, Brian. Thanks. One suspects we're about to find out how irreplaceable you are.
Congrats on going home - we'll wish you the best until September 1, 2016, at which time we reserve the right to call you every name in the book.
Good Luck. National Signing Day will NEVER be the same.
Wow, Brian...I wish this were not true. This blog site was the one thing (other than my email) that I checked on a daily basis. I don't think this blog will ever be the same because your shoes are too big to fill. I hope nothing but the best for you and your family. Thank you for your dedication to the Bruin family. Good luck and farewell.
Thanks Mr. Dohn,
We should all pitch in to buy him a Chick-a-fila combo.
DOHN-CORLEONE!!! I am going to make you an offer you can't refuse!
Say it ain't so, Brian. Your blog is THE best place for all things UCLA. You manage this blog and all the characters who follow it so well.
You are a class act Brian. You will be sorely missed. Please let us know where you're ending up and I'll check in from time to time!
:(
Ahh dude that's a bummer. You can tell us now, your gonna miss the, "Is Joe high school junior gonna commit on his summer visit?" questions. You ruled with a firm but fair hand, you'll be missed. Please indulge me, is junior Dohn gonna commit to UCLA or Rutgers in 15 years? And will he start as a freshmen?
Thanks for all of your hard work over the past few years. You will definitely be missed.
Brian anything we can do to keep you? This is literally my favorite site your my favorite blogger. hell i check this site before i check my email. Reading this blog daily was an exciting part of my day. You Q&As were the highlights of many weeks. I wish you the greatest success. Thanks for all the hard work.
IS this leave for the better?
Thanks Again,
LBCbruin
Thank you and best to your family. Great work.
THanks for the hours, hard work, effort and high standards. thanks for checking in w/ sources, following tips, and evolving the blog into a place Bruin fans checked first, and still waited for the big details in the paper.
- anon. poster who asked James Bond movie question (and others each week)
Chiming in with another thanks. Read your blog every day, usually checked in two or three times. Appreciated your honesty and integrity in your reporting. Best of luck and good fortune in your new opportunity.
One last Q&A?
Brian,
Thanks for all of the hard work and objectively keeping us up-to-date on the school we love. The Daily News seems to be losing a lot of good people and you are one of the best.Good luck in the lousy weather of Jersey.
Brian,
I'm sorry to see you go, but you have to do what's best for you and your family. The guy who takes over has some big Crocs to fill.
And strange as this may sound, you will always be part of the program for me.
Best of luck.
Not a shock for me. I read between the lines with the recent amount of vacation and time off. More time off than usual it seemed. I assumed it was job search/interview related. Very interested to see where you land next. Best of luck and thanks for all the information over the years.
Brian,
Will miss your work. Good luck.
Tillamook will seem even more isolated w/o yor blog and articles
Thanks for all the great reporting. Best of luck back in the East Coast.
Thanks for all the great reporting. Best of luck to you!!
Even though I checked your blog religiously, this is my first ever post. THANK YOU for the amazing work you put into this blog and covering our beloved Bruins. You will be sorely missed. Best of luck in all your future endeavors, Brian.
You gotta let us know where you go, I'm comin out for the Rutgers-UCLA game, beers for sure!
wow, bummer. you were far and away the best beat writer to ever cover UCLA. good luck, and go get a fat cat or two over in the grease trucks.
Brian, I just wanted to say you are inspiring in your dedications to journalistic integrity and to your readers. Hopefully you'll continue to inspire through your hard work in your future endeavors. Good Luck!
Thanks for the memories and all the great UCLA news. I wish you and your family the best in Jersey.
Noooooo!!! No no no no no. No no no :'(
Best-run blog I've run across.
You'll be missed. Best wishes.
Just don't give us another female reporter to cover the Bruins!
Remember the look on Pete Carroll's face when Eric McNeal picked off Booty for the 13-9 victory? Yeah, that's the look on my face right now. Shock, dismay, and a "wha happen?" look. Man, I've only been reading this blog for a short time and I already am attached. *sniff sniff* You'll always be an honorary Bruin to many of us. Whether you want to or not. The Bruin family is like the mafia...once you get in, there ain't no gettin' out. ;)
In all seriousness, thank you for your hard work, your unbiased reports and your excellent journalism...and of course for putting up with some of the, er, overzealous Bruin fans and those posing as overzealous Bruin fans. Best of luck to you and best wishes to you and your family.
:(
Thanks and good luck!
Steve
Your professionalism and insight will be truly missed. Thank you for your years of dedicated reporting. Good luck in your future endeavors.
I just want to say that living in Seattle and being a huge Bruin fan, this was the first place I'd look for the latest scoop. You did a great job and your work will be missed. Best wishes to you and your family in the future. Thank you for the great job you did covering our Bruins.
Thanks for all the news and updates. You will be sorely missed. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
Thanks for all the news and updates. You will be sorely missed. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
Brian,
You've truly made this person addicted to your reporting and will greatly miss having you around. From your tireless work ethic, reporting throughness and dry but whimsical sense of humour, you are a true professional and entertainer.
Wherever you surface, they will be lucky to have you. Best of luck to you and your family and remember you are always welcome as an official honorary Bruin. Thanks always for a great read!!!!!
I've been following your blog for over three years and I am deeply sadden to read this announcement. This has been my homepage and there is no other page I frequent more than this one. This is due to the breaking coverage you provide, having the use of reliable sources and the insight you provide for us. Bruins Nation is a DISTANT second to this website. They will NEVER come close to the QUALITY of coverage you had provided these past six years. Many there did not like some of your opinions of UCLA, but then again, there is no saving those overzealous fans.
Let's hope that we can get a great quality beat writer with an excellent work ethic like Dohn...or at least half of that. Thank you very much and good luck in your future endeavors.
Brian,
It's been a pleasure to watch a real journalist at work online. Thanks for all your hard work, and best of luck in your future plans.
I can't believe it! Good luck to you Brian and thanks for everything. If things don't work out in Jersey, you'll always have a job here...
Brian -
What a bummer. Please let us know where you land. Perhaps I'll have to follow whatever team you are covering as a way of feeling like I'm staying in touch with you. Your blog has become part of my everyday life and I have deep respect for your work ethic, talent, humor and dedication to your craft.
Thanks for the great work. Best of luck to you and your family.
I hope this means you will now be working for the ESPN college page. What can be said, you were simply the best. Even on vacation I checked your website daily. The bruin faithful will sorely miss someone of your caliber. You are an inspiration for all future journalist. I hope you know you made my mornings, afternoons and nights with your up to the minute reports. Is there any way we can keep you? Hope you know you are already missed. All the best in your future journalistic endeavor.
This is a very sad day for us Bruin fanatics, Brian. You've done a remarkable job covering the Bruin football and basketball teams, running this blog, and giving us lots of excellent, timely news. Thanks so much for doing your job with integrity and professionalism. Whatever awaits you in NJ, I hope it brings great satisfaction and happiness to you and your family.
Brian,
What is there left to say that hasn't been said? I came to your blog first whenever I was on the Internet. This was the best place to get accurate reliable UCLA info. Thanks for all your work covering the UCLA beat and your professionalism. It was a pleasure meeting you this season (still love the story about Alfred's folks coming to America).
Best of luck to you in your future endeavors whatever they might be. You'll be missed.
That sucks Brian, this blog has been my home page for years. I wish that you could've been covering the Bruins when they had more success for some reason. If they turn it around it will be bittersweet that your excellent reporting was during such a dark time.
Best of luck to you and your family, Brian.
You will always be a true Bruin to your loyal readers, the ranks of which I am proud to count myself within. Thank you for your unwavering professionalism and dedication to your craft.
Your blog was the New York Times to Bruins Nations TMZ. Your old school "just the facts" style of reporting was a breath of fresh air in today's radical journalistic climate(cue Foxnews/MSNBC). I hate that now BN is the only bruin game in town. Who is going to fight against those overzealous bullies who weight their opinions heavily over everyone else(BTW who cares about their game simulation, I'm sure they are horrible gamers if their bloggin is any indication). Good luck in all things Dohn. You will be missed
Hey Brian,
Thanks so much for your time, efforts on behalf of the Bruin Faithful. I can't tell you how much I would look forward to opening up the Bruinsnation web site, finish reading that and clicking on the link for your column. You did well. We will miss you. Best of luck to you and your family.
Brian, over the past three years we have linked 4,383 of your articles on Bruinville.com (wow that is a lot of cutting and pasting for us). Thank you for all the great information that was available no where else.
BobTheBruin
Glad to see you go, BUM!
Best Bruin sports blog
Readers say to Brian Dohn
Farewell and Godspeed
Anyone who frequented the board should at least be respectful and leave at the very least an anonymous link. Thank you very much Brian for your coverage. It was a site that i always enjoyed being able to rely on.
Anyone who frequented the board should at least be respectful and leave at the very least an anonymous link. Thank you very much Brian for your coverage. It was a site that i always enjoyed being able to rely on.
Thanks for your great work. Best of luck to you and your family.
Great job of reporting ! I logged in every day. It is not going to be the same without you. Great coverage of Bruin sports. Good luck to you !
Sorry Brian, we all read this blog religiously, professed our undying support but in the end, it doesn't pay your bills. Too bad the Daily News couldn't figure out a way to make some money off of this perfect example of everything that is good and bad with the internet. Good luck and hopefully you'll get the compensation you justly deserve.
Great job of reporting ! I logged in every day. It is not going to be the same without you. Great coverage of Bruin sports. Good luck to you !
Best wishes to Brian and family.
Now that Blair Angulo is a Staff Writer, covered the LA Tennis Open, is he covering the Bruins?
Brian,
Thanks for running a most informative and fun blog. I will miss getting all the hot Bruin news and updates from you. I appreciate your insight, candor & class.
Best of Luck to you & yours!!!!!
Best of luck. I echo what has been said. The Daily News and UCLA were lucky to have you.
Good luck to you and your family Brian. Whatever team or scene you are going to cover in the future is in good hands.
You have made all of your readers better informed and better Bruin Fans. I doubt we will get as much inside information as quickly and professionally. If the Daily News decides to continue the UCLA blog, that writer will have Sideshow Bob sized shoes to fill.
Thanks for your time and dedication to the blog and readers. I will miss the in-game BB chats (even if they always devolved into FB recruiting Q&A's), Q&A's (even if they became speculation sessions on 8th graders and Chick-fil-A ads), and most of all signing day 2009. I hope you leave LA with a net positive of memories and experiences especially your time with UCLA.
Thanks Brian
Sippery Pete
p.s. if you haven't left LA by Sept. 3 there is a tailgating plate and a ticket to the SDSU game with your name on it.
Great news that new opportunities are coming your way, but SAD SAD news personally for me. This has been the only site I've read religiously for about 2 years. You've awakened my dormant passion for all things UCLA and reminded me, inadvertantly, of my college years. I was once a Bruin, and b/c of the personal insight into the program and joy of reading the blog, renewed my sense that I will always remain a Bruin. Corny huh? But true. Thanks Dohn!
Go Bruins!!!
Go Dohn!!!
thanks for all your hard work throughout these years... you were always the first place i checked for ucla related news...
where ever you go im sure your legion of readers here will follow.
Que? This news is too much for me. I am going to drown my sorrows in a tequila bottle. Vaya con dios amigo.
By the way, can I have your press pass?
As a long time UCLA fan who lives in the Northern Calif. Sierra's I have enjoyed and valued your writing - the best way to keep up with UCLA with timely and accurate information. Blessings to you and your family in your new journeys.
Again, from a student, thank you for EVERYTHING! Best of luck back home; you deserve all the happiness and hope your new gig allows to impact sports' fans lives like you have us Bruin faithful.
Thanks again and best of luck!!!!!!!
Brian,
Thanks for everything, and good luck on the east coast. Most importantly, from a fellow journalist, thank you for reporting the right way - especially in an age where it's so easy to cut corners and insert personal speculation instead of fact.
Not going to say anything new here. But I just wanted to give my thanks for your hard work and professionalism in keeping us up to date in all things UCLA football and basketball. We will definitely, definitely miss you. And I feel sorry for whomever follows you in taking this beat. I also feel sorry for us.
I applaud you in taking the plunge and leaving the newspaper business (at least I hope you are, haha). I am still in it, writing about sports (lucky for me, not in LA, so I can still remain partial in the area I cover/work), loving it but worrying every day if it is the right thing to do.
So good luck, safe travels, have a wonderful life with your family and God bless ...
Have fun in the new Red Bull Park!
Whoa Brian,
I am really saddened and actually tearing up. But for the last week, I figured something was up as you were not yourself in enthusiasm. Man, wish you and your family the best. You have been amazing and hope the person who they have coming after you can be half as insightful and have such relations with the kids and staff at UCLA just as you have. Thanks for everything brotha.
thanks for the info and work you did including answering emails and inquiries. best wishes for you and your family in the future! hopefully in the future if you ever happen to catch a ucla game on tv you can root for us!
Brian,
As you can see by the number of postings to this...man you were amazing and really made Bruin fans feel connected to the teams as you brought on such insightful relationships and info for us all. Thank you again and wish you and your family the best. Get that kid from the Bruin paper to come after you cause jill painter won't do and definitely not wolf with his hollowwood stories and distractions.
Good luck Brian for all that you and your familiy will have in your life going forward.
For us Bruin fans it's a sad day because we lose the best beat writer/blogger on UCLA. Hopefully the Daily News will continue to blog, even if it's very difficult it'll be at the same level you did.
Still....good luck!
Thank you for all your great work for the past couple of years. Reading this blog has become a daily ritual and no doubt it won't ever be the same. Best of luck to you and your family.
Brian, 167 comments to date is a testimony to your great work - congratulations on the move. Does anyone MOVE to New Jersey anymore - highest taxed state in the Union.
Seriously, is Wolf on the $UC blog jumping for joy? He probably figures that the UCLA blog won't get 20x as many hits anymore.
Brian-I live in Virginia and never read the Daily News when I used to live in CA. Somehow I became aware of your blog, and you won me over from the LA Times. Hopefully the Daily News replaces you with someone good.
I dont comment often but follow your blog religiously. Your tireless reporting and unbiased opinions created a tremendously effective source of knowlege for me. I truly wish you and your family the best with you new life in NJ...their fortunate gain our great loss. Thanks of the memories, Brian!
I have greatly enjoyed following your blog and it has been my primary source of information about my beloved Bruins. Best wishes to you in your new endeavor.
Brian, thanks for the great coverage of UCLA over the past several years. You will sorely be missed during FB and BB season. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Brian,
The very best of luck always. You did this job with ability, diligence and integrity - you made a great many of us happier with all your great reporting about our university - and you will no doubt do just as fine a job in your future endeavors.
Most strikingly, you brought a candor and integrity to this blog that made it a superb site to visit. I regret that Holly and I couldn't make it to meet you with Ted and Mel and John before that Arizona bb game. I was looking forward to that conversation.
I wish the best for you and your family always and for us, I hope the LADN can hire someone of equally high quality - the name Robert Kuwada comes to my mind - to carry on with this blog that has become so central in allowing fans to keep on top of all that's going on with things Ucla sports. Vaya con Dios - you will always feel like a friend to so many of us and we hope the feeling will remain mutual
Wow... It's hard to believe, but I understand. Going home is always tempting. Well, whoever will take your place has some large shoes to fill. I only hope that even though you are a Scarlet Knight through and through, UCLA will hold a special place in your heart.
The phrase, "All good things must come to an end," couldn't be more true here. There will never be another Dohn. Brian - thanks for being the hardest-working journalist in sports. Anyone with an interest in UCLA sports benefited tremendously from your work ethic and the relationships you developed. Best of luck to you and your family in Jersey, and continued success in your next professional endeavor. You won't need any "luck," though - your talent and professionalism will no doubt continue to pay off for you moving forward. Thank you for all the enjoyment you provided me for the last six years. When a journalist leaving a newspaper feels like a death in the family, that should tell you the kind of positive impact you have had on people.
How would you like to be Dohn's successor? It'd be like a president succeeding Lincoln.
Hey Brian - Congrats on your new gig and going home, but you will be sorely missed by this Bruin fan in Northern California. I wake up to the blog every morning and you have been a fair, accurate & extremely informed voice on UCLA Athletics and I wanted to personally thank you. Very rarely do I comment on blogs, but I felt the need to thank you.
Good luck.
Best of luck to you Brian. You were a tremendous source of inside info for Bruins (and some of our rivals) and the people that are getting you next are a very lucky bunch!
thanks for the good reading and hard work Brian
Thanks for the insight on Ucla football. Your writings were unbaised and greatly respected. The best to you and your family.
God Bless.
Thanks for the good times, Brian. I wish you the best of luck for all that the future holds for you and yours.
Brian,
This was always the first site I would open up in the morning. Thanks for the insight and the integrity of your work. Best wishes on your new gig.
Brian, you were an old school beat journalist who beat the competition with regularity. You'll be missed, but I;m sure this chance will be a good one and the right one for you.
If I can do anything, neber hesitate to call.
Bob Keisser
LBPT
Dohn, if it wasn't for your blog i would be stuck looking at the other moronic opinion blogs... I have a tremendous amount of respect, and thanks for the great work.. Good luck.. and bless you and your family..
DAMMIT!
Does this have anything to do with the restraining order you had to file against VB?
Dohn,
It's a sad day to see you go. I'm a Bruin living in Austin, TX and you bridged the many miles back to Westwood for me. Keeping me updated on all things Bruin. Your insight has made me feel like I was just down the street from campus. I hope the next person can live up to the standards you have set for this blog. Thanks, much appreciation and good luck.
F. Davin Birt
Bummer, first we lose Bruin Basketball Report and now your blog? Anybody have other recommendations for keeping up with Bruin bball recruiting and news?
Best of luck Brian, I checked this blog several times a day. You will be missed.
Congrats on the new gig. Hope everything works out great for you and your family. As for the rest of us. . . .I'm not sure what we do now. I have yet to find any other site that comes close to the information on your blog. I also very seldom, if ever, found anything of interest that wasn't here first.
Brian,
Thank you so much for all your hard work in informing us about all things UCLA related. You will be sorely missed. (Not sure where I will turn to now to find UCLA info, or what my new home page will be when I open up my browser). Best of luck to you and yours!
Thanks for all the hard work and terrific, objective reporting Brian - your absence will certainly leave a void for all Bruin sports fans
Thanks for all your hard work. I checked this blog daily, and then even several times a day. Your reporting will be greatly missed. Best of luck to you and your family.
Wise, this Brian is. Career & family, he must do what is best for.
Missed greatly, he will be.
Come his way, good fortune will.
From Bruin fans near and far for wise blog, thanks aplenty.
But another there is. Take his place he will. To fill large shoes, Be difficult as it may.
Ted Miller from espn gives BD some props.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-11-7/UCLA-coverage-takes-a-hit.html
hey brian...THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND EFFORTS...and i bet the real reason you are going 'back east' is to be there when the BRUINS play the SCARLET KNIGHTS in Jersey...but this time you will be covering this game from 'their' perspective...tehe...
GOOD LUCK...and all the best for you and your family
Thank you for being a voice of professionalism and reason all these years in the midst of a group of passionate yet sometimes unrealistic UCLA fans. It just occurred to me you joined the same year Howland came to UCLA. It was definitely a fun experience for me to witness the rebirth of UCLA basketball with you and the fans on this blog. Best of luck to your next endeavor.
Brian, thanks for the great work, you will be sorely missed. You have changed people's expectation of sports journalism by giving us real, interesting information and critical analysis from someone who's opinion and knowledge we've come to trust. Checking your blog has become part of my daily routine. I'm not sure what you've provided can be replaced, we will have to wait and see.
Going to the Star-Ledger?
Thanks for your effort in maintaining this blog.
Aw snap Dohn! A tear just dropped up out my eye.
You will be missed.
Brian,
Thanks for all your hard work and great coverage. Your work has rekindled my interest in UCLA sports to the highest point since I graduated 20 years ago. As a former sportswriter who covered a college beat, I have the utmost respect and admiration for the job you did (and sacrifices involved), and wish you all the best back in Jersey.
Well, Its safe to say the Jill Painter wont be pursuing the job, thanks to the tools. As much as we all didnt want to see it, 6 years is about as long as you see a beat writer stick with the same beat. The next writer will have to deal with the Gene Bartow syndrome, please Bruin Fans stay away from the death threats this time! I know you will have much success in the future Dohn, enjoy the journey.
On another note, has VB jumped off the bridge yet?
and will there be a Dohn reunion tour for the Rutgers game at the Rose Bowl?
While I might miss the ability to ask a "thoughtful" question during the Q & A,. I will not be missing 90% of the questions you tools ask!!
So which service should I pay for? Rivals or Scout? Anyone have an opinion?
Best of luck in your future endeavors Dohn. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into this blog; it's greatly appreciated.
I never posted on this blog before, but feel inclined to do so now in recognition of Brian's professionalism, dedication and years of insight. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
Good Luck. Thank you for the blog.
Haha - good point, Anon @ 12:10 pm. I'm sure the pay sites will now see a membership increase. I'd definitely go with Scout if I was picking between the two - more members, more info than Rivals.
Best of luck, Brian! I am confident you will do very well on your new endeavor. All of the UBTA will miss you. If you are ever at an UCLA Home Game, you still have that open invitation to our tailgate!
Thanks for all you hard work over the years!
UB
Brian,
Thanks for all your hardwork. I checked this site 3 times a day for Bruin info.
To all the Bruin fans...we need to write the Daily News editors to pressure them to replace Brian with someone who will be as dilligent as him.
As popular as this Blog is, I am really surprised they have not put up a post to adress this. They could very quickly see a lot of traffic disappear if they do not appease all us Bruin fans.
Brian I wish you and your family the very best.
I will miss your updates and insightful comments.
I am saddened that you will not be here to see us put UCLA football back where it belongs!!
Thank you for your dedication to this blog!!
good luck Dohn.
watching a top profesional work, a pleasure has been.
Thank you Brian Dohn
We all hate to see you go
Thank you Brian Dohn
Brian,
Best of luck on your future endeavors... whatever they might be. Keep us updated and make sure the Daily News puts in due diligence finding your replacement. Thanks for all you have done these past few years.
-BZ
Quitting loser. ehhe j/k Thanks for everything. Your blog was a ray of sunshine that I checked multiple times from work. Good luck and hope your move is the best thing for your family.
Thanks Dohn. UCLA sports reporting just suffered a major blow. You will be missed!
Dang. Good luck in the Garden State, and I hope you got a gig with the NYT! As long as you don't have to cover the Yankees, you'll be good. Thanks for the hard work, you really created the best UCLA blog in the net.
Mr. Dohn,
I was a loyal reader who enjoyed perusing your blog daily. I would like to thank you for your dedication to us, the Bruin faithful. Best of luck to you in the future.
Let me get this straight...you've been here since 2003? Hey would you mind running the Trojans blog for a little while?
Take Care and Good Luck!
Now, don't let the door hit you, UCLA needs to get back to winning.
I too have never posted, but i have been following this great blog rigorously for almost 2 years now. Thank you mr.dohn and best of luck in your future endeavors
Dude, I hope you're the new sports information director for Rutgers. You've done a fantastic job and created one of the best sports blogs out there: informative, entertaining, and classy. I guess I'll keep my subscription to the Daily Breeze, but the sports section won't be the same.
Starting to feel like a wake in here, so I guess it's time to reminisce...
I remember the first time I stumbled onto this blog - probably late 2006 - and thinking how I had hit the jackpot of UCLA football information. Good or bad, my fanaticism has been fed daily ever since. And fed well, too, I might add.
Thanks again, Brian!
When Brian told me of his decision, I could only smile because I knew this was perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him to go home.
He has been a great employee for us over the past 11 years and has made "Inside UCLA" into the most popular blog on our Web site through his tireless efforts and great reporting.
This blog is just as important to us as what goes in the newspaper on a daily basis.
We have posted this opening nationally and I have already heard back from some tremendous journalists who are interested in the position. I realize it's nearly impossible to replace Brian, but we're going to do our best. We're looking for someone who can not only beat the competition on a daily basis, but also understands the importance of this blog and keeping you updated on a minute-by-minute basis.
Jill Painter will be filling in during fall practices with some help from Blair Angulo and others. We hope to make a hire ASAP.
We're going to miss Brian just as much as you.
If you have any comments, concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to let me know,
Gene Warnick
Sports editor
L.A. Daily News
gene.warnick@dailynews.com
Thanks for sharing our sentiments, Gene, and recognizing what a thriving community Dohn has created here. He will truly be missed, as will his wit and insights. Please find us another 5-Star Recruit!
thanks for all the hard work. you're professionalism shines brightly in all of your posts. Also, thanks for not making the blog a joke like scott wolf has done with his.
At least we won't have to guess where Wolf is going when he leaves the paper: Adult Video News.
re: replacements for Sir Brian Dohn
Sir Genes Warnick, thank you for your pointed comments, your points are well taken and demonstrate your dedication and diligence to your profession, the newspaper, and this blog. Many wishes for a successful search for a replacement beat reporter. I am confident that a nationwide search will produce top candidates for interviews and you will shortly have a difficult decision to make. Who replaces Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Coach John Wooden, or Coach Pete Carroll? Very hard shoes to fill those of Sir Brian Dohn.
At this time I would like to switch hats for one brief moment in time. As a follower of the football programme across town, I implore and plead with your best humanitarian sense to respectfully request the following job actions: (i) LEAVE SCOTT WOLF ON THE USC BEAT, and (ii) DO NOT TRANSFER SCOTT WOLF TO THE UCLA BEAT.
It is an open secret that the best beat reporter covering the football programme across town has been Sir Scott Wolf. Again, please leave the status quo. Sir Wolf runs a great blog and provides a fascinating and illustrative look into the football programme across town and many other aspects of sports and entertainment. Overall a quality product for his readers.
Very truly yours,
LAWYER JOHN
My friend turned me to this blog about 7 months ago as signing day was approaching. I was craving up-to-date ucla football recruiting info and this site had everything I was looking for. Since then, I have checked this site at least once a day.
Thank you for all your hard work Brian. I would wish you good luck, but I don't think you'll need it.
Brian,
This blog was the best! I came here several times everyday to get all the latest on my beloved Bruins. You did a magnificent job, and like others here have pointed out, all without being a homer. Fair and honest reporting. I will miss your work immensely.
Now..... As you are headed back east, can you please try to start up a west coast bias? We need all the pub we can get. Best of luck!
I need my Bruin fix. I keep checking back to see if there's any new posts...I guess it's a habit by now. Hope they get someone familiar w/ the program, insightful, and knows the X's and O's of the games. I have a feeling a complete outsider is going to have a really, really rough time gaining credibility w/ many of the readers.

brian, this blog and your reporting in the newspaper will be sorely missed; you've certainly set a high bar for whoever takes over the UCLA beat at the Daily News.
wanted to thank you for your professionalism and ethical approach, you've done journalism proud =D the sports world tends to take itself a little too seriously so it was great to see you error on the side of caution when dealing with info regarding a bruin student-athlete or high school recruit. best wishes and keep an eye on bruin football!
Brian, thanks... although you were overly senitive much of the time (especially for a blog), do appreciate the efforts put forth, the numerous updates, and the posting of on point "anonymous" comments - despite the numerous threats.
That being said, it will be good to get a fresh change. I too fear if an "unknown" will take over and not have a good relation or inside track with the teams/personal that this blog will suffer greatly. Keeping fingers crossed. Now... let's get this show on the road and get the new person in (personally I would prefer an alumni). Season's about to start and there's much NEWS to report.
Larry,
To you point about an alumni... you are truly missing the boat. One thing that made this blog great was Brian's objectivity (infuriatingly so at times). His ability to give an objective inside look at a program we are not objective about is what made this blog great.
Both Eddie Williams and Nick Abele cleared their academic hurdles and should be at spring practice. You're welcome Brian.
Brian...Thanks for all the enjoyment you provided this loyal Bruin. You did a great job covering UCLA. You will be missed. Best of luck to you and your family.
Thanks Brian. This blog and your commentary on UCLA sports were second to none. You were fair, honest and always provided fact driven information without emotion, judgement or bias. You are a true journalist in a world where true journalists are rapidly becoming endangered species. Best of luck to you and your family and may your new gig bring you as much joy and fulfillment as your efforts covering UCLA brought to the myriad fans that read you.
UCLABZ,
I am fully aware of your comment suggesting someone from "outside" the program could lead to more of an "objective" perspective. Totally understand. Nevertheless, I'd still prefer to see an alumni here.
Good luck, Brian. You did very well on this gig. Even though the DN is a rag, you totally outperformed that fool at LAT.
Brian,
You and Bratton leaving in the same week!#$?? This town is going to hell in a handbasket. Seriously, I appreciate your professionalism and your diligent efforts to keep this blog above the level of idiocy and scumminess of almost every blog out there. You will be missed...
Looks like I'll be keeping my job after all. I'm sure my productivity at work will be increasing dramatically. I'm very saddened by your departure. I wish you the best Brian. I thoroughly appreciate all of your hard work here. Thank you and God Bless
Brian, add my thanks to the hundreds already sent. Best of luck to you and your family. I enjoyed your blog everyday.
Yessir, you were. You will be missed BD
Nice praise from your editor Brian. Tremendous job, we'll miss you!
Good lu k to u and your family. U will b missed.
Dohn,
Your blog and reports will be missed. I spent countless hours blowing off my day job just to read your posts. Those were the days. My loss but my employer's gain, I think. Good luck Bro!
Ray M.
Ugh, it's only been 2 days and already I miss Dohn. I feel lost...
Ummm... when are we gonna get some new posts? More basketball news is out there - the 76 Classic schedule has been announced. I know, not much news to get super excited about - but hey, it's news. UCLA plays Portland in the first round.
so like, is there a chance still that he might come back? i mean like even a 0.0001% chance is still a chance!
Personally, I don't care who replaces Brian, I just want the person to have:
(1) Integrity - print what you know and respect your sources.
(2) Respect - realize what the readers want and treat them with a level of respect. Football, recruiting, and hoops news is what the majority look for news on.
(3) Insight - have good relationships with the people inside the basketball/football programs and build a sense of trust.
Basically, these three characteristics describe Brian and they are why he and the blog were so successful.
Brian was awesome, but he's gone. The fact that the blog hasn't been updated for 3 days tells me the baton is being dropped, and that maybe the LADN isn't going to treat the blog and UCLA with "utmost importance" after all.
How long is the proper mourning period for a blog? Enough weeping and gushing Dohn testimonials, already. Anybody home, Mr. Warnick?
Brian,
As a long time reader (& first time poster), let me say thanks for all the years of hard work and dedication you put into covering UCLA. Wish you and your family the best in your new endeavours. I will miss the updates and insights that only you can provide.
Brian-
When is the last day on the job? Are we going to get posts up until the point you vacate the position or is the blog done until your replacement is named? FINISH STRONG!
"When is the last day on the job? Are we going to get posts up until the point you vacate the position or is the blog done until your replacement is named? FINISH STRONG!"
its too late for him to "finish strong". this blog has been going down hill for weeks, and now it is even worse. hopefully soon the folks at the DN realize that print newspapers are not far from being completely gone and that they should pay more attention to their internet resources, especially one that was as successful as this blog. The longer they take to post something (anything!) the more visitors they are losing
thanks, Sugartits.
Thanks for everything Brian. Your work was appreciated, good luck in the future.
I hope they find a replacement quickly that works as hard as you did but am not holding my breath.
Dohn is now working at BRO! I can't believe it.:)
DOHN ON START OF UCLA PRACTICE
August 7, 2009
http://ucla.scout.com/
Brian Dohn, who just left the Daily News where he covered UCLA for six years, provides us his insight on some of the keys heading into UCLA's fall camp, including a rundown on personnel and more...
