Checking in

Hello all,

Practice resumes today at 4 p.m., and I’ll be out there. I’ll be talking to Rahim Moore, I’m sure, and I’ll try to get Rick Neuheisel’s answer on the road unis. Anything else people want to see?

Thanks
JG

Can you see why Brehaut played after all the talk about redshirting? Thanks.

  • sandiegobruinfan

Jon – What day/time is the team scheduled to depart to Knoxville? Thanks as always for the Bruin 411.

  • BruinBurd

yes, I would also really like some answers on the redshirts for Bre and Thigpen?

Also, what is he going to do to prepare the team for the noise and crazy environment they are going to encounter?

  • Fan4Life

Found it interesting you were able to capture the subtlety in Rahim Moore’s remark about the “whack” conference instead of “WAC.” Made much more sense the way you had it down compared to some.

  • UB (Ultimate Bruin)

I think the Brehaut questions was already answered by CRN. He stated that Brehaut was ready to play and wanted to play. He also stated that now that he HAS played, he will play a lot more. Finally, CRN said it would keep the QBs in competition and improving.

If I read between the line correctly, the coaching staff made a calculated decision that if something happens to Prince, Craft would only be a stop-gap fill-in. That being the case, they decided to get Brehaut some early touches so that he does not go in cold in November with no game time experience. I beleive Brehaut will mop up most games from now on.

  • romeojam

YES! Please find out about Brehaut. Does him playing a few plays in the first game mean he is not eligible to redshirt this year? Does that also mean he is moving up the depth chart?

  • Bruin_67

Are the recent transfers practicing?? I would like to hear Mobley’s thoughts on the trOJan/Buckeye game. Your the man JG.

  • BruinChick

How about asking about the positive influence of my spirited rally of the fans on the sunny side of the Rose Bowl originating in section 3 during each of the defensive plays?
    :)

  • Bruin_67

I just wan to know what Willie Mobley has to say about this Buckeye/trOJan game??? Thanks JG.

  • BruinChick

    hmm…

  • DoubleBruin

    Jon,

A few of my friends and I are going to the game in Knoxville. Can you put up a post where we (those going to the game) can state where we’re hanging out in Knoxville before and after the game.

    Thanks!

  • Everlong Bruin

I agree with UB. I think Brehaut has always been the “unoffical #2″ with the redshirt option. Now that RN got that out the way, we’ll see if the depth chart get’s “offically” changed.

Jon, perhaps you can ask about the depth chart for both QB & RB positions. Not confident there will be any straight answers at this point though.

  • UB (Ultimate Bruin)

The redshirt is gone — unless he gets injured and played in less than 3 games, then he can apply for a medical redshirt.

Why is this such a mystery to everyone? We have a VERY talented freshman class. They are ready to play. I say PLAY THEM! So, apparently, does the coaching staff.

Again, reading between the lines, the coaching staff must feel that this year is going to be MORE than just 6-6 and a bowl game. Last year, they did nor play Prince and burn his redshirt. Why the different stance? Because this year, IMO, the staff feels 8-4 or 9-3 is not impossible. They want to get this young talented atheletes some PT early and often.

    — UB

  • UB (Ultimate Bruin)

Bruin Chick, how about the UBTA’s spirited Tunnel 19 (cool-in-the-shade) shouting on EVERY defensive down, not just third downs! We annoy the heck out of the ‘wallets’ as we roar on every defensive down. They look at us like we are CRAZY.

We have to yell at these lazy alums to get up on 3rd down. Most do not. Then, at the end of each quarter, they stand the whole time to get the circulation back in their legs. Really! If they would just stand up on every defensive 3rd down, then their atrophic condition would certainly lessen!

    — UB

  • UB (Ultimate Bruin)

Did anyone else notice that Geoff Strand (the “World’s Oldest Cheerleader”) was MUCH more subdued at the SDSU game? He did not come over to the press box side at all and when he got the mike on the sunny side to address the whole stadium, the student led yell crew had more of a role than before. Perhaps my blogs for him to tone it down and stay (for the most part) in the alumni section has borne fruit!

  • Sunset Bruin

I think RN went “all in” with Brehaut and Thigpen. He realized that this could be a special year, and that these individuals were ready to play.

I also agree with UB’s comments above. Why wait until November to send in a cold, untested freshman?

  • mike chat

I guess CHow has way too much class to talk about it, but tenn is talking. I have a feeling that Chow will really open the playbook to beat Kiffen. I think he was doing some dirty stuff behind Chow’s back to submarine him out of SUC.

  • cliq

    Hey JG,

Like your enthusiasm so far. Glad you’re starting to make it interactive.

So far the information you have provided has been plentiful, but it has been one-directional. Keep your readers involved by allowing them to interact with both you and the team. Q/A, questions, fun questions, etc.,. A two way street will keep readers coming back.

And some direction on questions would be good too. Users will feel uninspired at times if it becomes too open.. “any questions?”

Anyway, just my thoughts and why I read this blog… I’m sure you have better blogosphere experts out there.

  • BruinChick

trust me, I am that annoying person who was up on every play trying to get everyone to be loud. Half my section likes me, the other half HATES me. Should be a fun season.

  • UCLA3

YES! an interview with Mobley including his thoughts on the team and last weeks game. that would be sweet.

  • UB (Ultimate Bruin)

    Oh, so you’re that annoying person . . . .

  • bruinfan627

Please start doing Q/A. This blog is going to become very dry without the interaction.

  • The Football Gods

what place does an interview about the usc/osu game have on a ucla blog? the things covered here should have to do with our school, not theirs. if you wanna see coverage for that, you should go see what wolf’s interviews with the song girls turns up.

as for me, i’d like to see in general whether depth charts are any more solid. what happens at corner, did dye/love lock up that safety spot, qb and rb depth chart updates. as unlikely as it is for the coaches to give anything solid there, at least its something that will genuinely affect our season.

  • Anonymous

    Jon,

Thanks for the great work. Is it possible to grade the performance of the team versus San Diego State by position?

Also, can you do the weekly Q & A sessions with us?

    Thanks

  • BruinChick

Yup! I am that annoying person. :D

  • bruindodger

Yeah I agree with the need for Q/A. Need the interaction and thoughts on different players and events on UCLA. It feels like (just) reporting and not interactive. The interaction is what made the blog go big time.

  • rejn

Jon – What is the issue regarding the Road Unis???

  • Bruingold82

I did notice that I never really saw Geoff during the SDSU game. I got worried that something happened to him, then I saw him over on the other side. He was really subdues and it was strange. We had to start our own 8-claps!!

  • Andrew

    JG-

First off, GREAT WORK this last month. I used to check this blog about once a month, now I check it a few times a week…its a testament to your hard work.

I want to know more about next year’s recruiting class. Clearly, it’s a waiting game. We’ve got less than 10 commits, which seems to almost definitely be strategic. He’s going after the high fruit, and letting our success on the field yield elite recruits down the line. I know Chris Ward was at the SDSU game, can we get some updates on how we’re doing for the 2010 class? Thanks

Here’s some bulletin board material for the players and coaches…

Orgeron: Nobody wants to beat UCLA more than he and Kiffin
    September 8, 2009 2:45 PM

    Posted by ESPN.com’s Chris Low

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin and his right-hand man, Ed Orgeron, know a thing or two about UCLA from their days on the Southern California staff.

It sounds like some rivalries never die.

Orgeron, appearing on Kiffin’s television show Sunday morning, said, “You will not find anybody else in the world that wants to beat UCLA more than Ed Orgeron and Lane Kiffin, so these boys better be ready. They’re going to find out what it is to prepare for a big game. And you know what? I think our guys are going to be ready for the outcome of last year. You can hear it in the locker room. I don’t think there needs to be any extra motivation to beat the Bruins.”

Kiffin, who’s gone out of his way lately not to stir up any controversy after his scorched earth approach soon after getting the job, was quick to point out that it was Orgeron making those comments.

“I didn’t say that. I read that. I don’t know. You’d have to ask him why he said that,” Kffin told reporters. “He’s never been very fond of their colors or their team. I remember a lot of pregame speeches from him.”

Kiffin was 5-1 against UCLA as an assistant at Southern California. The Bruins beat the Vols 27-24 in overtime last season in Los Angeles.

Speaking of a lack of fondness, Kiffin and UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow aren’t exactly what you would call old fishing buddies.

One of the main reasons Chow left Southern California following the Trojans’ blowout of Oklahoma to win the 2004 BCS national championship was because Pete Carroll wanted to give more of the play-calling responsibilities to Kiffin (and ultimately Steve Sarkisian).

Chow felt like he was being wedged out and already had a strained relationship with Kiffin, who was the young gun on the staff and the guy Carroll had pegged to take over the offense at some point.

So after making a run at the Stanford head-coaching job, Chow left USC to become the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.

Should be interesting in Knoxville this Saturday.

  • BruinFaithful

Dude. Is there anybody else you can talk to besides Rahim Moore? Seriously.

People want to hear more about the future and recruiting. Developments. For the most part, we understand that players and coaches are going to give the same can PC answers. You dropped the ball on confirming who was actually at the game Saturday and interviewing some of them.

There was a major story on Uko. You have him listed as being at the game Saturday, when he was actually on an official visit at Cal. I know you interviewed Malcolm Jones, but RB isn’t a position of major concern for us right now. DT and the DL as a whole are. This kid is now saying that Cal and USC are his final two and that he is visiting USC for an official on sept. 26. He also claims to like Cal’s 3-4 defense a lot. We all know these kids arw fickle and us winning or a Cal oss will probably change his mind. He ecently had USC and Oregon as his top two, until Oregon’s embarrassing loss. I assume this had something to do with his recent change of heart. However, some insight from you on a huge recruit like this is of interest to us. He might be the best DT we are currently recruiting and the best since Price. Maybe you can catch him for an interview. Here is the story.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=West_Recruiting

Additionally, I think you’ve done a great job. I like your frequent updates and stories. You and Dohn both have strengths and weaknesses. Dohn would decide for us which story was important enough to print. I like that you don’t do that. However, what Dohn was really good at, was breaking HUGE stories, having good sources and relationships, and having good insight and intuition on recruits. He was usually right on who he thought would not come to UCLA.

Just a few recommendations. I would love to hear any recent developments on the DL’s we are recruiting, not just Uko, but Willis, Heimulu, Powell, Odighizuwa (I heard he might be a silent to SUC), Marsh, Allen, and Taula. Many of us are petrified of what will happen next year when Siewierski and more than likely Price are gone.

  • LAWYER JOHN

There really is no need to dig up old dirt that has been plowed over many times over the years. Any differences between Lane Kiffin and Norm Chow are past history. Coach Kiffin has proven himself to be the better person over the years, and the higher achiever, of course, having made it to the head coaches position at the Oakland Raiders and University of Tennessee. It will be interesting to watch the matchup.

  • g2ucla

Ive seen UKO play numerous times, and yes the kid LOOKS the total package, but please do not compare him to Brian Price, past or present. He got upset at UCLA for telling him like it is, lacks the intensity and effort, and that was evident in his first game this season. I will be in Tennessee this weekend, hope to see and hear the Bruin faithful in Neyland!

  • TruBruin

BruinUNfaithful, do you have any cheese to go with all your whine? Would you like someone to raise $39 for you to join rivals so you can find out what Uko will eat for lunch tomorrow. Try this, Have FAITH in recruiting and live for next Saturday. This blog is mostly about what is going on with the Bruin team and players who are ACTUALLY BRUINS. Dude, join a recruiting service or something instead of bitching all the time like you do.

  • Anonymous

    BruinFaithful is a putz.

  • The Football Gods

oooooooooo he callled you UNfaithful! don’t call him UNtruBruin, don’t do it! things might get out of hand…

in any case, to be honest i think that recruiting news is the biggest thing that made this blog take off in the first place under dohn. now i’m not holding jon to those standards, he himself has admitted that he has little knowledge of this world and it would be unreal to expect him to develop dohn-level sources even by the end of this recruiting cycle. still, you shouldn’t yell at somebody for wanting recruiting news when it was clearly a major focus of the blog before, as evidenced by its dominance over every q&a and in-game chat.

  • BruinFaithful

    go2Ucla:

I love how people come on here purely to elicit an argument and without any regard for the content of the posting they are criticizing.

I never compared Uko to Price. Comparing him to Price would indicate that I said he was as good as, which I never did. Here is what I said regarding Uko:

“He might be the best DT we are currently recruiting and the best since Price.”

The statement “the best since Price”, indicates that he is not as good as. Not better than, not as good as, but the best since.

Sweetness, I don’t drink wine, but if you like I can get my GF to get some for you to go along with your cheesy lines.

Listen TruMoron, do you have anything better to do than to come on here and aimlessly name call? Why read my post you nimwit?

It’s amazing to me how many idiots come on here on a daily basis with the sole purpose of cutting other people. Why not break down my comments and make constructive criticisms if you like? What purpose, except jerking yourself to oblivion, do your aimless insults provide? You’re not even on topic.

If you can open your blind eyes for a second, you will see that Jon asked “Anything else people want to see?” If you don’t want to hear about recruiting. Fine. You can voice your opinion. There is no need to cut me for asking valid questions that many other people are interested in. To say that this blog is not about recruiting is freaken LAUGHABLE. Most of the questions and topics on this blog are about recruiting. However, since you are personally not interested in recruiting, I would hope NEVER to hear a question from you regarding recruiting, lest you choose to lose anymore credibility. In fact, I’m sure I’ve heard you ask questions about recruiting. You want to retract your statement?

I personally would much rather hear about recruits than some can PC answers from the players or coaches about Saturday’s game. What do you expect them to say numbnuts? How much they hate the Vols, Kiffin, and Orgeron? You expect the coaches to divulge their game plan? Freaken retard.

Next time, stick to the topic. I have no interest in your half ass misguided insults.

Exactly, you had to correct yourself. Best Ucla has recruited SINCE B. price. If anyone has seen UKO play in person, I’d bet you’d be dissappointed. Playing in a horrible league, against kids 5’8, he does not take over, or much less dominate a game. I’d like to see him a Bruin because he’s a name that will attract other players.

  • BruinFaithful

    g2UCLA:

I did not have to correct myself. I had to correct you, read the original quote and Uko wasn’t the only guy I mentioned. I just mentioned him prominantly because of the recent story. I don’t care who he’s played against in HS, he has done well in camps and combines against guys equal size and talent or larger. The talent of the programs who have offered him is also telling.

In any event, the post was not only about Uko. It was about how critical recruiting the DT and DL position is for this year and getting some updates. What will we have next year? Mobley, a JC DE transfer and a bunch converted OL’s? Scary. It’s a given that some of these recruits will HAVE to play DT as true Freshman. We need to recruit guys who can play immediately.

  • g2ucla

It’s funny how people get all bent out of shape over comments. If you don’t want people commenting on your comments, then stick to just reading the blog. So calm down and don’t get your panties in a bunch.

  • The Football Gods

damien holmes, david carter, mobley, the small chance price comes back. is jess ward a senior? i think he is but i may be wrong. nobody has to do more than contribute as a backup as a true freshman. and we do have moore committed as of now if we really need that role filled. calm down.

linebacker is a more pressing issue in my opinion. although that may be softened if we can keep jefferson committed, and play him there instead of safety like we’ve said so far.

i do like the part where you don’t care about his hs games though.

  • BruinFaithful

Holmes and Carter are DE’s and way too small to play DT (both are around 250lbs.), maybe if Carter puts 20-30 lbs. on and becomes more athletic. Ward is a Senior. Moore and Flowers do not have the size or talent to come in and contribute effectively at DT (also about 250 lbs.). They were more safety offers. I think we will take 2-3 more DT’s and they better be from the list I mentioned, because a Freshman WILL have to contribute as a Freshman and possibly start.

Say what you want, time will tell. DT is the MOST pressing concern facing UCLA for next year. Like the OL this year, and look what happened? We had to find 3 new starters and 4 major contributors, including 2 Freshman. This is the same dilemma that faces the DT and DL line for next year. Therefore, we better find Sua-Filo and Hasiak type talent and hope Mobley is Maiava type talent.
