Tennessee president lauds UCLA for football, brains

Pretty interesting quote…

“The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that in a Monday meeting with its editors, interim president Jan Simek said “Lane comes from the Pac-10, which is in many respects the epitome of great academic institutions playing great athletics, as this past weekend showed on several different levels, including to us. When we lost to UCLA, we lost to a better academic institution, too.”

I’m so impressed with the class shown by this man and the fans of Vol Nation. Our own Nikki Caldwell is cut from the same cloth. I’ll root hard for the Vols and Coach Kiffin to have a great season.

    Good luck Vols!

Agreed, Tennessee proved to be a much classier school than I expected. I will be rooting for them the rest of the way..

Wow, I cant think that this quote will go over too well in Knoxville… even if it is true

Good Ole Rockytop – Whooo! Rockytop Tennessee. Is still stuck in my head! although 3 hours of 8claps this weekend should clear my condition.

This is An odd statement especially since Lane Kitten was from our arch enemy’s program. However the Vol’ fans were indeed awesome as was the entire town. Although the cabbies were hard on the wallet.

I love the quote… and of course, couldn’t agree more. But that being said, I can only assume that Jan Simek will not remain the interim president for too long for making such bold comments. Can’t assume this would go over well with the Tennessee alumni.

  • DC in LA

    Agreed. Very classy.

On the other hand, did anyone catch the Lane Kiffin show? On it, he basically said that they lost the game because UCLA got lucky and that they had an off day. No kudos to the Bruins, in fact, you could just see his distain. Lane is the opposite of Jan Simak.

I am usually NOT a fan of what I’m about to say, but I hope Florida runs up the score on that classless weenie. I hope Florida is up 49-3 in the 4th quarter, and calls time out just to prolong Lane’s embarrassement.

  • The fans and people of Tennessee were ridiculously nice. Before, during, and after the game, they would come up to us and chat. And not trash talk, actually converse and come to mutual understanding. The atmosphere was great, the band was great (they did a great rendition of Sons of Westwood, see my link for proof), and the crowd was smart. I wish the people of LA could act like that…

And yeah, Rocky Top is still stuck in my head too. Thankfully, it is a good song.

Agree with what everyone has said about the Tennessee fans. They were extremely friendly and welcoming. We were sitting in the heart of Tennessee fans and after the game, they were shaking our hands, congratulating us on a hard fought win, and wishing us a safe trip home. Not one negative word was directed towards us, although there were plenty directed towards Jonathan Crompton…

The Tennessee fans that came out to the Rose Bowl last year were the same way. Quality folks, even while their team was getting embarrassed on the field.

This makes me think that Kiffin will be a short timer in Knoxville. I don’t think their alumni will appreciate his classless (and rule-flaunting) coaching style.
