UCLA stomped, 74-47

Wow. UCLA just lost to Portland 74-47 in the first round of the 76 Classic. Its ugly loss earned it a date with No. 12 Butler tomorrow at approximately 9 p.m. in the second round.
Your thoughts? Midway through the second half, UCLA fans turned their attention to Saturday’s football game and chanted “Beat SC!”

I just don’t understand why no adjustments were made. Why is Howland SO stubborn? He won’t switch to a zone, he won’t change the tempo, he won’t press, he won’t play other players; we were getting killed and nothing changed.

I don’t care what happens in practice, put someone in who can make some plays. We’ve got a bunch of supposedly outstanding recruits who are riding the pine. If the starters can’t make a shot or play some d, rotate players in until you find someone who can. The entire starting rotation should be up for grabs as far as I’m concerned. I just can’t watch Jerime Anderson play 30 minutes anymore – maybe if his job were in jeopardy, he’d light a fire under his rear end and play like he’s getting a bball scholarship from ucla. I love Howland but these first 4 games do not reflect well on him. We’re not the only program to lose starters.

Problem is that at the end of the day our upperclassmen are getting all the minutes but the reality is that they are all role players. Keefe, Roll and Drago are not quick enough to guard man to man all game. Drago is good but his game is more suited to the pro game. A zone might help these guys and give the opposition a different look but we know we’ll never see that. Howland is great coach but he can be stubborn. Gordon, Nelson, Lane and Moser need to get more minutes so they can develop.

Great. Now we get to face yet another mid-Major in Butler and have the chance for further humiliation. Just fantastic!

I stayed up through the midnight hour here in VA to watch my Bruins play the worst Bruin basketball ever. Shooting 33%; 16 simple turnovers; poor defense; poor hustle; and no cohesiveness will get us nowhere.
I don’t expect much this year from the team but whew, we need to do better than this.
    Go Bruins!
