Bruin Bear caught in prank war
Warning: This post might spark some anger...
The Bruin Bear has been defaced. Caught in the middle of a battle that stretches part of eight decades, UCLA's erstwhile symbol was drenched in cardinal and gold paint sometime yesterday.
Pranks in the UCLA/USC rivalrly have a long and storied history: At one point UCLA students even threatened to kidnap USC's student-body president.
Read more about it here:
The Horror

The Bruin Bear was placed at the University around 1985 and has been moved twice if I recall. I'm certain that they used water based paint so it will wash off. Back in my day, the $C students used to dump detergent into our fountains because we didn't have the bear. UCLA students used to paint their trojan statue blue and gold and do similar things to them. It is part of the college experience good or bad.
HOW DO THEY LET THIS HAPPEN!?
1. What a half-assed paint job. I get that the vandals are in a rush, but come on.
2. Even as an alum, I have always been ashamed of UCLA students. Minimal pride comparative to other university student-bodies. To not have people jones'in to sign up and stand guard, just pathetic.
3. Just win Saturday. That will wipe that smug, entitled, "The Hills" esque smill off their face.
Hopefully our team will use this as extra motivation to beat them on Saturday.
fUCLA Better protect its QB better than the statute of its mascot. Damn, that is funny!

Beat the bRuins!!
Fight On!!
Oops...statue
They didn't use water-based. They used oil-based paint. I'm so pissed off, but I'll refrain from using profanity here.
It's a good thing they're treating this as a felony since it will cost a lot to remove, instead of equally effective water-based paint.
However livid we are, we can't really complain. It's our own fault as alumni and students that we don't care at all about rivalry week this year. It's absolutely shameful. Pathetic!
OK, so ten out of ten for effort, but minus several million for style, yeah?
"Better protect its QB better than the statute of its mascot"
Awesome.
Eye lern'd 2 spel at usc hurr hurr.
a tarp? really? budget cuts hitting us where it hurts most.
I guess sucmike didn't learn how to spell simple elementary words at his (pre-school) SUC.
since i attended UCLA in the 90s the tarp has been used - that is not the issue, but there was a group of UCLA students guarding the statue every year (mostly coordinated by the fraternities). what happened this year???????
by the way, who remembers this image in 1993:

It was a beautiful thing to see....
Looks like Ronald McDonald barfed ketchup and mustard on our Bruin.
Paul McCarthy would be proud.
Go BRUINS!
Actually, this is quite funny. Good for them. Now it's our turn. Didn't we get their stupid Tommie Trojan last year or the year before with paint? I remember seeing pictures of this recently.
For Bruin fans hoping we'll exact revenge and vandalize Tommy Trojan, it ain't gonna happen. The only time to do it is in the middle of the night. Taking a stroll through the crowded prison yard at San Quentin is safer than hanging around the SC campus at night. The only surprise is that the SC students made it back to the University of South Central still alive. Wow.
WOW!!!! What weak sauce. This is the best Figueroa Tech can come up with?
What a bunch of sorry South Central hoodlums.
We've dumped manure from a helicopter. We've chopped Tommy Condoms arms and sword off many times. One time welding the sword to his back.
"statute"? That's funnier. Now who really can't learn anything? 100k wasted on a worthless piece of paper.
WTF!!!!! The UCLA students of today are pathetic! That should damn well never have happened.....I was at the Rose Bowl last Saturday and was disgusted to see the poor showing in the student section!!! I was just as embarrassed by the overall attendance. C'mon, we have an up and coming team; yet, we show such poor support for these kids and coaching staff rebuilding this football program. God, when I was in school we loved our football team....The students of today don't compare to the students of past years...Again, PATHETIC!
And what exactly do we have to be proud of at the moment?
Sitting towards the bottom of the Pac-10 once again?
A basketball team that loses to mediocre nobodies?
Fee increases?
It's easy to say that the student body loved the football team when you were here when the team you rooted for was actually good and had a shot at a decent bowl berth. It's a bit different when the team you have been forced to put up with for the past few years is mediocre at best.
These anonymous posters are such a joke. You sound like such a bandwagon-jumper. You do love UCLA, don't you? Think about how fortunate you are to attend such a fine university. There are so many kids who would love to be in your shoes. A real fan will support his school his entire life, regardless of how they're performing on the athletic field. Yes, you're right! I was fortunate that the football teams during my time at UCLA were competitive...But I supported them just as fervently during our drought years. Once a Bruin...ALWAYS, A BRUIN! Do you always whine when things don't go your way? Hey, Junior...get ready for "life" when you graduate from UCLA. You gotta be there during the good times and bad times for whatever you're passionate about in life...
The Bruin Bear Security Force was headed by Elaine Daneshrad and run out of Bruins United General Representative Office #3. According to Elaine's post on her Facebook, she decided to cancel the Bruin Bear Security Force's protection of the Bruin Bear due to the increase in tuition, Thanksgiving, and Final's week, and instead have it serve a symbolic purpose. If you're mad about this, email her at edaneshrad@ucla.edu. To accept a job like that (coordinating the protection of our campus mascot) and to then decide that those goals are not worthwhile is a joke. To then make excuses about it is behavior befitting a child.
Here is Elaine Daneshrad's pathetic excuse:
"The incident that occurred with the Bruin Bear is extremely unfortunate. However, due to the combination of finals week, Thanksgiving weekend, and the UC regents' tuition increase, our committee decided that the purpose of Bruin Bear Security Force would be best served this year as a celebratory event rather than defense mechanism. Given the fact that the Bruin Bear was not vandalized last year, when Bruin Bear Security Force did not happen at all, we felt that not only was it was unrealistic to ask students to camp out all night, but that this new theme would be more beneficial to them during this time of financial struggle. Furthermore, because Blue and Gold week was cut down to Blue and Gold Day, the need for a spirited event was even greater."

look at this picture. the guy is wearing a red shirt? Is it a $uc fan cleaning up the mess.
"However, due to the combination of finals week, Thanksgiving weekend, and the UC regents' tuition increase, our committee decided that the purpose of Bruin Bear Security Force would be best served this year as a celebratory event rather than defense mechanism."
Uh..
1. It's not finals week.
2. Wednesday is typically not considered part of the weekend.
3. The tuition hike has nothing to do with protecting the bear?!
This was clearly an inside job. Elaine/Bruins United should be held responsible for the $1900 in damages.
Below is the Schedule of events for Rivalry week: These events including the Beat 'SC Bonfire & Rally is wholly funded and supported through UCLA Alumni It is supposed to be the ASB responsibility to staff Bruin Bear Security Force.
The Bruin Bear Statue was a gift of the UCLA Alumni Association in 1984. What happened to our student security? Perhaps students are protesting with respect to recent events on campus such as UC Regent. In any event, our tradition should always be upheld to protect our mascot. At the very least better security measures need to be put in place at once. This should be a 'No Brainer."
