Weekly Answers, Pt. 1

1) Which players do you think will round out the football recruiting class this year? – bruinbrian
I expect UCLA to land two major linebackers, one who also plays running back, a defensive end, one of the defensive tackles and an offensive lineman.

2) Who do we have the best shot of landing, Uko, Heimuli, Potoae and Odighizuwa? – anonymous
Heimuli, I’ve heard.

3) Concerning our 2010 FB schedule, I’ve noticed that Texas is now slated to play at Texas Tech on 9/18 rather than hosting the Bruins. Do you have any idea what’s going on; will we play them the following week (9/25) during our bye or during our bye week in November instead? – Randorson

All I’ve read was 9/18 for UCLA-Texas. Haven’t seen any differently. Just fired an email to the Texas SID for confirmation, though.

4) It is defenitley time for Ben Howland to scrap that peice of junk defensive philosophy and go up tempo. Even I can tell his starting five should be, Lee, Roll, Honeycutt, Moser, Keefe. Please tell me he will get at least two more guards in 2010??? – LeyHe brings in Tyler Lamb out of Mater Dei, and I think McCallum has a good shot at ending up at UCLA, though he won’t announce til much later.

5) UCLA Basketball had 2 nationally acclaimed recruiting classes in 2008 and 2009. Were the recruiting pundits & Howland wrong in their assesments of the talent of these kids or is what we’re seeing more atributable to inexperience and coaching deficincies ? – ron goodling
First of all, the top prospect in the 2008 class is in the NBA, and Howland had no idea he was leaving. Second, sometimes coaches recruit players to grow into their roles. Howland didn’t expect Anderson to play these kinds of minutes, same with some of the freshmen who are getting major time. The best player in the ’09 class just got back from a serious injury, and he’ll make a big difference.

6) Why does Howland continue to play Dragovic? He’s a detriment to the team both offensively and defensively when he’s on the floor and there’s no future for him. Why not dump him and let the young guys get minutes? – Adam
Howland is not ready to give up on Dragovic just yet. Eventually he’ll have to make a decision. Offensively, he got really hot last season, and Howland wants to see if he can get that back.

7) Why is Dragovic so inept defensively? Shooting slumps happen but being in the BH system for 4 years should yield more than what he brings defensively, right? – C
I think he’s been more affected by the assault allegations than he is letting on. He seems to really be struggling to find that extra level, and that can happen when bad thoughts get in the way.

8) Can you ask CBH if that zone talk will ever lead to actually implementing it in a game. – C
He will at some point. Hasn’t find the right matchup yet. It won’t happen on Saturday, that’s for sure.

9) What was the big deal about joe mauer surprising malcolm jones with the poy award? i mean i understand the award, but why joe mauer? – Anonymous
Mauer won the award in 2001 and is a Gatorade spokesman.

10) Can you have to IT folks fix the bug where everytime you go to your page it automatically scrolls down to the “chat” section of the blog? Don’t know if this has been addressed but it’s a little annoying. Thanks! – Mike
Talked to the IT guy, and there’s no way to fix it. I’m just going to delete the in-game chats after the game.
