Maiava, Presley not eligible for EagleBank Bowl
UCLA sophomore center Kai Maiava and freshman wide receiver Morrell Presley are academically ineligible for the EagleBank Bowl.
Jake Dean will start at center for the Bruins, with Nick Ekbatani sliding to right guard.
It is a huge bowl for the offensive line, which faces the No. 19 rush defense in the country in the Temple Owls.
"It's tough - I don't think anybody's taking it harder than he is," redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince said. "He apologized to the team on Saturday, and it's a blow to not only the offense but the whole team. He's the leader of that offensive line - he brings that fire and passion that I think helped the line play a lot better this year. I know he'll be punching himself for not being in the game."

Very disappointing that Kai Maiava did not get the work done in the classroom. The anchor of the O-Line.
As for Presley, I think USC dodged a bullet when he switched his commitment to UCLA.
BE REAL
Jon,
Obviously, this is terrible news. I'm not terribly concerned as this might news might warrant. However, their "No. 19" against a HORRIBLE conference. I feel we have time to recover. How are you interpreting this?
BigTime
Do they still travel with the team and do all the other bowl activities?
No, they can't travel with the team or participate in official "bowl" events.
JG
Hey Jon, what do you need to have to be eligible? Do you have to have a certain GPA or not fail any classes?
2.0 with 12 units, I think.
They may have dodged that bullet, but there are other bullets that are hitting them between the eyes.
Presley has to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
They can pick up their EagleBank Bowl warm up suits, gift bags and commemorative t-shirts once the team comes back.
I Dig Go Go Girls was trolling on Inside USC this afternoon.
the biggest reason more big time recruits do not choose ucla...
Presley would good to go at South Central U..
Sign these guys up for the musicology series.
Can Presley take classes in RAP STAR 101? Sure looks like one with all those tattoos. Glad that he is not on the roster at USC.
Hey Captain Irony,
Is there a reason why you report the trolls? I see these posts from you a lot. Just curious, do you think UCLA fans have the ability to chastise trolls or is it more for reporting purposes?
Not a good sign at all. You can't even get a 2.0 gpa in your FIRST quarter at UCLA. How in the world are you going to make it through 3 or 4 years? Better not become an academic issue for these guys or else we need to recruit another C and WR.
Hasiak has been sent home and is not likely to return. He had a number of confrontations with players during practice. He went home to Hawaii.
Wasn't Jake Dean one of the top-rated Centers in the West as a high-school senior?
actually, anon, the first quarter or two tend to be the toughest. if kids get through the first year, they're usually good to go.
It's funny how negative most of you are towards Carroll. With the amount of time and energy these guys spend on the field, a bad quarter or two can be expected. I bet if any of you shit-talkers had to spend as much time and effort on something so physical and draining, your gpa's would be nowhere near what it is.
Man, I feel badly for Hasiak. I hope he can get things back on track, even if it's at a different school. I thought he was going to be a big contributor. This makes the Ajawara loss a bit of an issue.
Seems like they have the inside scoop now. All news seems to break there before here.
The Donkey is prohibitively excited to hear this news. The Donkey believes that the bruins will be just fine for the bowl game despite other lamentable bruin fans already thinking the end is near. Fear not ucla bruin fans, for you are in much better shape than the Trojans of USC.
God Bless
Folks, do any of you follow UCLA Football at all? First, Maivaia had to redshirt last year after his transfer from Colorado which means he has had a full year of UCLA academics behind him. If he did not, he could not have played this year. Second, Hasiak is back with the Team and had been for weeks. He went back home for a weekend, got his head straight with the help of his family and returned with the blessing of CRN. The loss of Hasiak is big, but not a killer. As someone mentioned above, Temple is not exactly a juggernaut that has a giant killer of major teams. Temple is a good team in a lower tier conference. With focus we can beat them.
Before I get jumped on I meant the loss of Maivaia for the Bowl game.
With Hasiak being expelled from the Team, academic casualites, etc., it looks like the UCLY Bruins are imploding. Hope 2010 works out better for both UCLA and USC.
BE REAL
Gary, do some research before you mouth off to people. Hasiak was once again sent home today and is not expected to return to UCLA

As for the point about Maiava, that is true. He was enrolled last year and therefor got satisfactory grades to compete this year.
My apologies. My mistake on Hasiak. The guy must really have some issues.
Obviousl;y they never bothered to fill the slot of Coach Ed K as academic advisor.
How the hell can players be ruled ineligible if there is someone from the program checking in on their grades and progress.
I have a high schooler and seem to get e-mails every other day about her academic situation via Edline.
So a multi-million dollar program doesn't establish such system for its 'scholarship' players?
Didn't Presley take a summer class? And if so, wouldn't those be applied to the Fall Quarter in terms of progress made? If so and he still didn't make the grade...ugh. Kai is not a freshman and has NO excuse. I don't care if it is in season...maintain C's in all your classes. Are you a biochem major? Then show up to class, do half the reading, attend tutoring sessions at Covel Commons and get a C.
OK my roommate was a bench warmer on the UCLA team 10+ years ago and they have it easy. Free tutoring, lecture notes, special practice tests that look very close to the real tests. There is no way these guys should be failing their courses.
For what it is worth, those above-comments from "BE REAL" were from an imposter. I don't have any comment about ucla's troubles. It's not my business and, quite frankly, I don't care.

Good thing SC didn't get Pressely or else you would have FOUR ineligible players, not your standard three.

If you can't get eligible at SC, college just isn't your thing.
