Immediate reaction to Lane Kiffin being named new USC head coach

* My first reaction is one of pure shock. Isn't this a guy with several violations to his name in one-plus year at Tennessee? Now he's going to a school with sanctions about to come down? Shocked.

* Forget Kiffin, his staff at SC could be incredible. I'm hearing he'll bring Ed Orgeron and Monte Kiffin along for the ride. That is one hell of a staff to start.

* Orgeron is a monster recruiter and Tennessee's class was already lining up to be a good one. This does not necesarrily undermind UCLA's recruiting efforts, but USC fans should consider themselves lucky. A Jack Del Rio or Steve Mariucci (?!?) does not translate like Kiffin does.

* I think this will seal the deal for Deitrich Riley to USC, as he already was considering Tennesee, and I don't expect many from the Trojans' class to jump ship.

* While the coaching change is a big one, ultimately, I don't think UCLA's recruiting will get a major jump from it. Rather than follow Carroll with a no-personality dud, USC went with Kiffin - questionable as he may be - and that is better for the Trojans than an retread trying to get back in the game.
