Nelson suffers concussion in loss

Freshman forward Reeves Nelson said he suffered a concussion on his first touch of the game, but told trainers he was fine and continued playing.

"Me and the big guy (Markhuri Sanders-Frison) head-butted the first time I got the ball," Nelson said. "The doctor said it was a concussion so I'm going to have to be out for a few days. I was lying to the trainers just to stay in the game. Obviously I didn't play as well as I would have liked but I tried to stay in there for the team."

UCLA head coach Ben Howland said in his post-game press conference that he was giving the players two days off to rest, but Nelson said he might need additional time.

"They said it's a day-to-day thing," Nelson said. "I'm definitely going to take the two days off that the team gets and maybe I'll be able to practice Tuesday but I'm not sure."

Nelson had six points on 2-of-5 shooting and two free throws, a far cry from his team-high 18-point performance in Thursday's win over Stanford.

Why do these kids think it's better to lie and risk their own health and cost the team since they can't play 100%? Somebody needs to have a talk with them and tell them to be honest about their condition when something happens.

Another "one step forward, two steps back" game. What a disappointment, esp after opening so strong. Too many bad turnovers (yet again) and a breakdown in offense (also yet again) to get us through. Then we couldn't capitalize on Cal's turnovers. WTF? The future of this team is Honeycutt and Nelson. Forget Lee and Anderson. Drago doesn't know if he's coming or going w/ his offense. As my 8-year-old nephew simply put it, "He sucks." Yes he does.

I agree with anonymous. Just like Kevin Prince did against USC trying to stay in and be the tough guy, he threw a costly interception on the next play. In this case, Nelson played far below par and may have cost the team not to mention what happens if he suffers another blow to the head.

Nelson didn't play terrible though and if hes out then that means, Lane would play more and im not sure he would have done much better then a hurt nelson

It's up to the coaches to pull a player, of course the kids are going to feel pressured into staying in the game.

Football coaches have an excuse if the player doesn't take his helmet off but basketball coaches have none. It's easy to look a person in the eyes and know that there's something not right.
