1) Are you as impressed as I am with how articulate some of these 17-18 year olds are? I'm super impressed with Owa. I look forward to watching him over the next 3-4 years. - Peter
Yes, I'm definitely impressed. This is essentially my seventh year involved in some part in college recruiting reporting, and recruits are getting more and more savvy. Some are just bright kids. Others know how to play the recruiting game so well. In general, this UCLA class has some incredibly well-rounded kids, yes.
2) It seems that there has been a lot of criticism regarding Coach Howland's constant giving minutes to Nikola Dragovic, despite his lack of effort on defense and his continual missed shots. Do you think this criticism is valid, and if it is, is Howland unaware of, or just ignoring this criticism? - Anonymous
I've tried to ask him countless times what the punishment for poor play is, and his answer is less minutes. However, it has not translated into the games. I can certainly understand that he feels he doesn't have a backup power forward. But at the same time, shot selection is so important, and Dragovic continually takes off-balanced, rushed shots.
3) Was Coach Chow in the offices on signing day? I didn't notice him in the video's? - Anonymous
Yes.
4) Why won't the "Chow to USC" talk die? - AnonymousBecause they need to cling to something? They like to rile you up? They need to make my life more difficult? Pick one.
5) Much credit is given to Neuheisal as a recruiting, and specifically his ability to "close." However, the key last minute, big-name pickups are defensive guys. So, what was Bullough's role and how is he as a recruiter? - Anonymous
Bullough played a huge roll, as did Todd Howard. I saw Bullough a handful of times on official visits, and he seemed to have great rapport with the recruit's parents, which is crucial.

Poor, poor trogans. Fearing that UCLA has nearly equaled them in recruiting, fearing their upcoming sanctions, and fearing mediocrity in the only sport which their own fans and institution acknowledge. They resort to spinning such "Chow to USC" nonsense to deflect the aforementioned fears, and the fact that their head coach is lame kiffin, who cannot coach.
The comedy at Figueroa Tech is endless. SeƱora Rosa the new President?
Fart on, trogans.
you do know that USC has the #1 recruiting class?! just saying...
ucla's offense is still sub-par to every Pac10 team except for Wash St because of its lack of talent on the O-line and the QB position is still lacking!!
Scott Wolf wrote a story on how both Norm Chow and MIke Garrett were interested in a return to USC. Garrett even had it in part of Kiffin's deal that he had to make an offer to Chow but Kiffin made it a point in public to let everyone know he would be making the calls. The forced offer in their meeting was half-hearted at best.
So as long as Lane Kiffin is head coach at USC it would be extremely surprising if Norm ever went back. One of the reasons that so many Trojans are hoping Kiffin fails miserably.
Neuheisel is doing great as far as I'm concerned. Look what he inherited from Dorrell. And if you don't think the gap is closing between USC and UCLA, you have your head in the sand. UCLA trailed only 7-0 when it lost its starting quarterback four minutes into the third quarter. USC had the number one recruiting class on Rivals.com (not taking into account that Seantrel Henderson hasn't and probably won't sign a letter of intent to USC). And bye-bye top ranked class when he doesn't sign. Their class was ranked seventh by ESPN.com and fifth by Scout.com (again, not taking into account that Seantrel has not and probably will not sign a letter of intent to USC). When you take Seantrel away, UCLA passes USC on Scout.com so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. It must be hard when your entire self-worth is based on the success of USC football, especially when they lose like they did a lot this past season. Do they have to put all you "anonymouses" on suicide watch? Still waiting on the big news from Norm Chow.
"...USC football, especially when they lose like they did a lot this past season."
Neuheisel would have sold his firstborn for a nine win season. Actually, that isn't as big of a deal considering Neuheisel would sell his firstborn for an inside tip on a quarter horse race.
DWIGHT! i want to have your baby. your post was spot on. i love men of your character and writing skills. OH YEAH. I BELIEVE every word u wrote. GO BRUINS!
With Garrett getting lame kiffin as the HC, that's almost like being sanctioned!
Cheat on suc, where football is king! Academics, morals, ethics??? Fuggedaboudit!
Geez, with what you say about Lane Kiffin's 6 sanctions last year I'd hate to hear what you say about Slick Rick Neuweasel and the 51 he earned in a few years at Colorado.
Actually, maybe I would.
Who can defend Slick Rick?
The circle the wagon mentality of the Trojans is amazing. As a previous poster noted, Trojans have their identity so wrapped up in football and ignore all other sports at their inferior university, that any threat to that identity elicits an elementary school response of one upmanship. For example, Trojans shamelessly dredge up the past indiscretions of Neuheisel of several years ago. Over the last two years there is nothing to indicate he has run anything but a clean surging program. Even worse, Trojans and especially the one who calls himself "Sam Gilbert" emphasizes rumors and innuendos associated with the great John Wooden. By the way, yes I am aware of the UCLA handicapped placard scandal, but at least UCLA doesn't produce killers "OJ" and charity embezzlers "Anthony Davis."
Yeahm thats why usc has the most MEN's national titles in history. YOu can keep all of the softball and gymnastics titles you want...its all yours. You da wo-men. BTW, what makes a ucla education any better than a usc education? nothing. Larger class sizes? USC is extremely well known for the tight knit community and the networking that comes with the degree, whereas at UCLA you're just a forgotten number. If you want a more concrete analysis of where usc stands in comarison to ucla, take a look at the most recent college rankings.
Well, I love how Bruins circle the wagons to protect the "great" John Wooden.
It's not just "rumors and innuendos" In a yahoo sports article Bill Walton talks about how he was taken care of from the second he stepped foot on the UCLA campus. How, if scrutinized like UNLV they'd have to hand back at least eight championships.
That link was posted a while back here and all the sudden the same outlet that put Reggie Bush's dirty laundry out there isn't reliable. Go search the Los Angeles TImes and read their in depth stories on Sam Gilbert and John Wooden's dirty titles. Are you a real Bruins fan? Go dig out your copy of "GIant Steps" and see what Kareem comes clean about with his history of Papa Sam.
Hell, I'll be fair. It's like what Brian Dohn said when asked about UCLA's history with boosters "nobody's closet is spotless," that includes USC. I'd be surprised as hell if Reggie's step-dad wasn't living in that house rent-free. OJ Simpson? A frigin' disgrace to not just the Trojans but the entire human race. He should have been thrown in prison years ago. I'm not going to stick up for that piece of trash just because he wore cardinal and gold.
So are you finally going to admit John Wooden needs to give back some hardware or just continue to be a hypocrite?

I am sure that your mom, aunt, grandmother, sister or daughter appreciates you dismissing championships won by any women's collegiate team including your esteemed USC. To dismiss the accomplishments of women in any arena whether it be sports, law, politics, medicine etc.. is demeaning and sexist. As for the quantitative comparison of the two universities you suggest, UCLA receives more applications and rejects more applicants than even Ivy League heavyweights such as Harvard and Yale. Might I suggest researching admission requirements of USC and UCLA for it's athletes as well?

Point well taken on "nobodies closet is spotless" I appreciate your take on the Bush situation and I can certainly agree that UCLA and other institutions of higher learning have been tainted by boosters and other unsavory characters throughout the history of collegiate athletics. Also, when concrete evidence is presented that links John Wooden and Sam Gilbert together, I will be the first to admit there is no "Saint" John Wooden.
The reason I posted in the first place is I find it ridiculous when Southern Cal posters in defense of Lane Kiffin dismiss his 6 recent NCAA violations, investigation of the hostess program and possible violations from Orgeron phoning Tennessee midyear recruits debacle, by using Neuheisal's violations from several years ago and Wooden's unproven relationship with Sam Gilbert as a comparison to deflect criticism of Kiffin. Too many posts sound like this. "Well Kiffin only has 6 secondary violations while Neuheisal has 51 while at Washington and Colorado and Wooden's relationship with Sam Gilbert ensured his championships." Funny how SC posters never attacked John Wooden until Kiffin and his dirty laundry was hired at SC.
Here's the yahoo sports article that mentions Walton;
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=dw-uclalegacy040206&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Like it says, he goes into detail in his book. Same as Kareem's does.
The article also mentions the L.A. Times articles that had such concrete evidence it forced the NCAA to sanction UCLA.
So there you go. Two of the greatest Bruins ever, cop to Sam Gilbert's involvement. The NCAA felt there was enough evidence.
You said you'd be the first to admit that there is no "Saint" Wooden if evidence was presented. Are you ready to now? If not, what else will it take?
uh, Sam Gilbert was also a USC booster. For fball and bball. He wanted to support LA athletes. Also, he never had any contact with recruits (though he did give players meals, clothes, and whatnot). In other words, he didn't have anything to do with getting Lew and Walton on campus. Also, I'm pretty sure no houses were bought for players, lol.
DT,
I'm not sure where you get the "no contact" idea about Sam Gilbert. Who do you think called him "Papa Sam?"
You really need to look into Kareem and Walton's books, Sam Gilbert's house was like the Playboy mansion for UCLA basketball players.
Gilbert made sure every player, their family and friends were taken care of. he even encouraged and paid for abortions for their random hookups.
I'm still waiting for the Anonymous poster from 1:38 to admit there is no "Saint" Wooden.
Let's face it both universities have impressive lists of notable alumni. I wouldn't trade my four years at UCLA for anything. UCLA is the greatest place on Earth as far as I'm concerned. The truth is, most USC alumni never had the chance to know what I'm talking about because they couldn't get in to UCLA (even papa's money couldn't open the doors at the public school). Seriously, I could never see myself spending four years among a bunch of mostly conservative elistist snobs. The only thing I like about USC is its cheerleaders who are always extremely hot but have you seen UCLA's this year? I think for the first time, UCLA's are even hotter. Although we did have the first runner-up to Miss Universe on the squad back when I was there.
Papa doesn't buy people's way into public schools. Papa only buys things for basketball players in blue and gold. Back in the day, if you averaged a double-double or put another ring on my good friend John Wooden's finger then I'd make sure you, your family and your mistress would be taken care of for life.
again, Gilbert was an "LA" booster, and took care of USC and UCLA players. Using him in your argument is a little short sighted, since Trojans were also being taken care of. Much different rules back then.
My point was that no one arrived to UCLA because of Sam Gilbert because they didn't even know him until they were on campus. Thus, unless you feel the players improved due to the extra benefits (clothes and food, lets not get carried away), then we would have won those championships anyway.
If you've read the many books on basketball, life, philosophy, poetry, etc., you'd have to be a pretty saintly person to try to look down on the man they call COACH.
