Weekly Answers, Pt. 3

| | Comments (16) |

1) What about our uncommited DE's? WHo do you think plays, who redshirts? - ETOwa can play now. He's the only one.

2) Name your preseason top 5 high impact freshman for next season and what we can expect from them? Including recruits you think might sign...i.e.Pullard, Heimili, Woods etc? - Eric T
Jones, James, Marsh, Barr, Heimuli

3) Will there be any UCLA commits announcing before SD? - H8T SucNot that I know of.

4) We have a good problem as WR next year...if we magically fliped R Woods, would he be #2 or #3 on your depth chart? Would we do have double returns with him and Smith or would we use only 1 return man? - E
Woods would probably be No. 2 immediately, but I think Gansz would still go with Smith as returner.

5) Do you get a sense that players who came in during the Dorrell Era are feeling the change in the caliber of player coming in now? Is there a sense of urgency if they don't perform, they either need to transfer, retire from football, or start performing? - Anonymous
Yes to everything. That always happens when a program improves though.

He asked about "committed." You mentioned Owa. Do you want to clarify or retract??

When a program improves??? We are 11-14 since Rick took over, finished in 8th place in the Pac-10 twice in a row, and have lost to our cross town rival by a total score of 56-14. Not sure I'd call that an improvement at all.

I don't think Marquis Jackson redshirts. I think he is this year.

Anon 7:09,

You wouldn't call going from 4-8 to 7-6 an improvement...?

You obviously haven't been paying attention. Improvement and success doesn't always immediately translate into W-Ls. Even Chetey Petey was 6-6 his first year. We lost to SUC 66-19 and to AZ 52-14 under Duhrrell in our 2005 10-2 season. We also barely won several games that year. There were obvious signs of trouble to come.

This year, we NEVER lost anywhere close to those margins. We were competitive EVERY game and still in it in the 4th Quarter. We played one of the toughest schedules in the country. Wazzu was probably the only cream puff we played. We were one of only 2 Pac-10 teams to win a Bowl Game, with perhaps the youngest team in the conference.

The wins will come, but you have to improve and build first, which we are currently doing.

I respected Dorrell as a man, but when he was here I always had a sense of dread watching games, like we would find some way to mess things up and end up loosing. With Rick, I at least felt we had a chance going in, and in some games when we were behind, I had confidence we could actually come back. And recruiting? Night and day. Dorrell could get the heavy ucla leans and some sleepers only non bcs schools wanted, with Rick we are in play for the cream of the crop. To think that UCLA football isn't improving since Rick got here is ridiculous - both on the field and in the ever important recruiting battles.
