Fire away with questions for this week’s Q&A. Please don’t post new questions on the answers section, because I don’t always check the comments. Save them for next week.

Did you feel the earthquake? It shook us good down here in Aztec country!

Can we infer from the departure of Bobo Morgan that Coach Howland thinks Stover would have been ahead of him on the depth chart next season anyway?

  • Anonymous

You mentioned Harkey’s maturation and Fauria contributing to a ‘tight end emphasis’ this season … Were Paulsen and Moya so very far behind those guys?

  • Anonymous

You know what I liked best about the 2006 Final Four team? Except the Cameroun Connection, all the players were basically from L.A. Erego, why is Howland so obsessed with guys in Michigan? Why not just lock up the best players from the City Section each year?

A lot of the football recruits expressed confidence in major playing time, or even starting, as freshmen. What’s it going to be like when they start competing with guys who may have thought they won a position in spring or who think their previous experience puts them higher on the depth chart?

Aside from playing with his father at Detroit, what school has the next best chance of landing Ray McCallum? Also, with the open coaching vacancies, and since both McCallum’s and Zeigler’s fathers are coaches at mid-major schools, do you see any potential “package deals,” whereby Howland hires either or both their fathers in order to successfully recruit Ray Jr. and Trey?

does UA make basketball shoes? I’ve never seen a pair, so if we leave adidas and sign with UA how would that work for basketball?

  • 909Bruin

Do you think D4 gets into the competition for the SS spot this year, or does he red shirt? I know he was talking about being a freshman all-american when he announced for UCLA so i dont think he wants to red shirt. Thanks

  • John A

Why do you think Brian Price is falling into the 2nd round in some of the mock drafts? Certainly he was a dominant DT this season, almost unblockable even against very good teams. Is it work ethic? Stamina? Hard to believe he can fall into the 2nd round.

  • highlander

It sounds like Bobo was basically kicked off the team by Howland. Could Bobo keep his UCLA scholarship and not play basketball if he chose too? What are the general rules regarding scholarships and removing players from D1 NCAA teams?

    What’s wrong with the Lakers?

Ben Olsen trying out for UFL? And that too will be very hard for him do to any playing time there, but most QB’s there have had many playing time in college and NFL.

Also, if Ben wants to get in sportscasting, should he make it a priority to do your podcasts? Sure, probably not getting any money, but he will get audio tape and improve his craft (sorry for Pun). People that are serious about getting into your business would pay for that opportunity. Am I wrong?

Sorry, but when you said Brehaut will probably or may redshirt in ur podcast, are you high? When was the last time Prince made it through an entire football season, Jr. year in high school? QB’s only learn by taking as much snaps as possible…so saving him for what?

“UCLA athletic department reaches agreement to renew contract with adidas” But why? Say it ain’t so. Can you give a little more insight? Will adidas at least promise to provide more product choice, etc? Btw, thanks for the awesome work as always.

Did you see Josh Smith play at the McDonald’s All American Game and what were your thoughts? To me he looked over weight and out of shape. I think he’s a project and not an impact player until he loses major lbs.

What are your predictions for open starting positions based on what you’ve seen in the first days of spring?

  • Bobby Smith

It seems like Ray McCallum is our best shot at another 4-5 star recruit. Is there any reason for us to believe that we might get 1 or more top flight recruits for next year?

    How is Randall Carroll looking?

Do you think there’ll be any football transfers after spring? How many would you guess?

CRN’s tone on the LT position seems a bit leaning towards starting Kia come fall, is Kia that much further along or is Downey and Abele not yet ready?

    Jon,

UCLA’s team Adidas gear is cool but they don’t sell it anywhere, why re-up with Adidas? Why not have Adidas agree to put UCLA gear in more stores?

    Who would’ve you signed with?

Assuming Smith starts at the 5 and Nelson at the 4, who is the best candidate to back them up? Seems like Lane is a 4 and Stover is a 5. Both don’t seem to be ready yet. What do you think?

  • Anonymous

In my opinion, in following BP as a bruin one may assume that he is easily a top ten pick, yet he seems to be going higher and higher on the boards, do you think scouts are caring too much about combine numbers than actual tape?

The game against Houston in the fall is on Yom Kippur. Have they announced the time of the game? Any chance it will be a night game to avoid issues with those who observe Yom Kippur? Are there any Jewish players on the team?

Please please PLEASE give us some good news on the BB recruiting front, I’ve been starving for even the smallest morsel of good news!

Are there any transfers / walk-ons that u know about of interest? How are Rice Jr and Pop doing? any chance of any of them breaking thru?

Any of our quarterbacks (other than the obvious 2) doing anything of note? Any chance of them surprising us by being on theedge of taking the spot from the obvious?

Does Dan Guererro have any pull with the NCAA to try and get the “one and done” situation changed. He was the head of the tournament committee, correct? I assume he, and most ADs from basketball schools, hate the rule, as do most fans.

  • Keith

With the new deal with Adidas, I was just wondering what was the outcome of the reported problem with the football shoes last Fall? Was that bogus, or was it resolved by the company?

  • Boston Bruin

How does Spring ball affect Carroll and Price in Track and Field?

And, while Savage is out of Spint FB, is he competing in track?

Why is Downey taking all the reps with the ones? I though you said that Abele was going to get the first look, and that he had a big lead/advantage over Downey.

  • RC3UCLA

Go Brett! As it seems you are getting an honest/good look at one of the Tackle spots, I hope you make the most of it! Anon 7:07- Two possible reasons for his work with the “ones”- Brett is huge, a lot bigger than Nik, perhaps hungrier for the chance to shine. I’d bet Brett has worked his tail off just to get this chance. I for one am rooting for him…May the best BRUIN win!

I’ve heard rumors about Howland recruiting some international players for this recruiting class. Any truth to these rumors? If so, do you know who he’s recruiting?

  • Spencer

Jon, where do you see the depth chart at right tackle going, especially with the freshman coming in?

Who is answering our questions? Are u or are u taking our questions to the staff?

Can you give us a little more in-depth analysis on practices?

    Kudos, Jon!

Jon, after reading all the negative post about ruin nation I was a little curious to see if the post were true. So, I posted a ignorant although well put together post about Howland’s record vs Lavin’s on both your blog and ruins. While you gladly answered the question politely and professionally the response on ruin nation was pathetic. Some nazi named nestor along with the rest of his klan attacked me with some of the most vile language I have ever heard. When I responded to the barage of insults I was sent a note that I was banned..LOL! I thought the blogs were for UCLA fans get information and voice their opinion. It seems like on ruins if you don’t agree with the feur then you get banned. I guess the post were right! I know you probably can’t respond but, your objective insight is appreciated..

    Thanks.

FOOTBALL: Hey Jon, I keep reading arguments back and forth about the pistol from fans on the different boards. Could you please tell me how big a change the fans should expect to see in the offense? I’m thinking it’s going to be a modified difference and not a drastic change. What’s your opinion?

P.S. I really like the podcast.

  • Anonymous

Can you elaborate on exactly why Bobo left? Did Bobo want to leave or did Howland initiate the change? Is Bob happy about the change?

  • Anonymous

Howland refused to answer any questions about why Donny Daniels is leaving UCLA for a less prestigious job at Gonzaga. Why is Daniels leaving UCLA?

Hey Jon, any pro baseball thoughts?

  • Rob M

So the “death count” on this BB season is now 3 players (Drew Gordon, Bobo Morgan, Mike Moser) and 1 assistant (Donny Daniels). Gordon, Morgan and Daniels seemed to make sense leaving, but is the transfer of Moser (who is reportedly a good personality guy) the redflag that something big is wrong with the program? Is there a big divide between Coach Howland and his players regarding his personality / coaching philosophy / lack of offense / substitution pattern / hygiene ??? What the heck is going on?

  • Rob M

    just reposted from other thread:

Are we going to be able to get some background dish on what the hell is going on with the BB team??

    1. Drew Gordon. – I guess it’s understandable at the time. Personality conflict, headcase/immature, frustration with losing, etc. etc. Huge loss because he was turning into a monster. (Hate to say it but he’d probably get drafted to the L if he stayed to his senior year.)

    2. Bobo Morgan – Didn’t seem to fit or “care”. Probably best for team and him to go separate ways.

    3. Mike Moser – Now what?!? He seemed like a good personality kid. Howland didn’t give him (or other deserving young guys) playing time this year, but those minutes should be there now that Dragovic and Keefe are gone. C=Smith, Stover; F=Nelson, Honeycutt, Lane and ??? (Moser)

So…. what the hell is going on?!? Is this about a larger issue like personality or philosophy? Geez, as much as I think we need a better offense, I hope this latest transfer is really just about lack of minutes. I stand by Coach Howland, but it doesn’t speak highly if kids are giving up on you/your system.

I think it’s a legitimate question to ask at this point: How many players have to leave the program early before the AD figures it’s easier to replace the coach?

What’s your best guess on what Guerrero thinks of the exodus of players from the basketball team?

When UCLA organizes a “pro day,” who organizes the event and conducts the specific drills? What role if any do current UCLA coaches play? Does Neuheisal attend?

It’s long been suspected that adidas shoes are not good for football…hence all the broken ankles and foot injuries our guys tend to come down with. Can you investigate if this was addressed once the news becomes official?

What players look most improved from last spring?

If you were CRN what would the depth chart look like if K-state was tomorrow?

  • Warren

With Bobo and Moser leaving, should we be concerned or encouraged (as in there are player that Howland has identified to replace them)?

  • Anonymous

do the players who left early (Farmar, Afflalo, Luc Richard, Love, Westbrook and Holiday) along with the transfers (Wright, Stanback, Morgan, Moser, Gordon)
now start to affect the team’s graduation rate? and therefore any NCAA penalties?

btw, 909 bruin, Maryland is an all under armour school.

How much truth are the rumors that Ray m. has eliminated UCLA and Florida and is down to Arizona and Detroit?

what happened to Crenshaw receiver Geno Hall and some of the other Crenshaw seniors? not really your area, but I started watching the hs playoffs to watch Hayes Pullard, who many of us thought was a lock for UCLA. and now want to find out what happened to the other seniors on that team (too bad they lost, and hope we can somehow land Thomas next year)

  • RC3UCLA

The future of our Lady BRUIN basketball is proving to be in great hands with the hire of Nikki Caldwell and staff. Congrats on a fantastic season! We’ve got superb talent returning in Jasmine Dixon and M. Walker, so we should again be competitive next year. That being said, how is Coach Caldwell faring in the recruiting world? When is signing day for Women’s Basketball? Thanks, Jon!

Anything new on one of 09′s biggest recruiting coups, Randall Carroll?

  • Anon

When you say about Kia that “Kia looks huge out there”, is this a good thing? In other words, does it look like quality weight? Also, were his problems before related to size/strength? Or more just missing blocks an/or inability to keep athletic guys in front of him on pass protection?
