Hey guys,

Fire away with questions for this week’s Q&A. Please don’t post new questions on the answers section, because I don’t always check the comments. Save them for next week.

What are your early thoughts on the “revolver”? So far I am not impressed because QB is exposed too much, and Prince not durable. Starting third yr with Chow, sorry, but not impressed. They should have done this with Craft, he would be killing it. Hope I’m wrong.

I have been to spring pracitices for a few years now and have noticed that Neuheisel spends all of his time focusing on the offense. In fact, a fan once asked where Neueheisel was and another correctly answered “Just find the QB’s and he won’t be far behind.” My question is this, do you think it is unhealthy for a head coach to spend all of his time with a group of members from one side of the ball? How can he command the respect of his defensive players when he has not spent any significant time with them?

  • BruinJigs

This is a silly question, but do you think that a position coach is solely focused on his group of players on every down, such that he can provide valuable commentary after every series or in any timeout? Do you think a position coach is ever concerned about the scheme of the defense as a whole?

Football: Are we bigger, faster and stronger than last year?
What will be our main strengths?
What will be our main weaknesses this year?

Excuse my naivete, but it is perplexing to me how people can make any judgements on how well a team is doing during spring practice, because any offense is going against the same team’s defense. How do you say UCLA’s O is stronger this year than last year if UCLA’s D is weaker this year? Isn’t it all about how much talent the new starters and remaining depth chart have at this time of year?

From what you’ve seen are Norm and Rick opening up the play book and letting Prince throw more passes? Will we be less conservative this season?

RB shuffle, when do we move Coleman to FB?

Do you think Knox transfer if he’s #4 on the depth chart in the fall? I want he to get more pt!!!

Is there a leader for the open DE spot?

How serious is CRN about moving Jetski to corner and do you know how Jetski feels about the potential move?

I find it hard to believe he would be moved but CRN made it clear that he thinks Franklin could be effective at corner if he doesn’t make strides at running back.

which of the walkons have made an impression thus far this Spring? David Allen? Papadikis? Franco? Etc…In terms of numbers, we are pretty thin at wide receiver, how has Jerry Rice Jr. looked?
Also, how have the fullbacks looked?
    Thank you.

Mr. Gold, what is Price’s draft status for the incoming draft? Is there anything he can do to improve his stock?
A few months ago he was a guaranteed first round pick but at the moment I’ve been reading that he is sliding towards the second round. As a USC fan, I must admit that Price was a great player and surprised that he is dropping on certain draft boards.
    Thank you in advance.

You recently reported that 2011 recruits Wittek, Thomas, and Blackwell attended spring practice. Word is they’d like to play together in college; in your opinion why would they and why should they sign with UCLA?

  • maxp

We obviously need a kick@$$ recruiter as an assistant since Howland is so good at in-game coaching, so who do u think will be brought in to fill Daniels’ void? When do u think the decision will be made?

  • MaltBaa

So what do you think of Chris Foster over at LA Times?

Are you bothered by ESPN linking to such programs as USC, Florida, Ohio State, and Oregon web sites? It seems that when a prospect is high on UCLA – they never fail to mention USC as someone else who is interested. When the roles are reversed, UCLA is mentioned as an afterthought. I feel this is a conflict as it promotes certain programs over others.

Any insights or thoughts on the Howland to Depaul rumors? May be old news now and nothing came of it, but don’t recall seeing any posts related to this. Thanks.

  • John A

With Abele now out indefinitely and Filo on his mission, is offensive line a big worry to the coaching staff?

  • Spencer

Can you give us your thoughts on the progress of the offense and the defense so far now that we’re getting closer to the midway point of spring practice?

  • Bobby

Is Josh Smith TOO much of a “project” to expect him to 1. Start, 2. average in double figures scoring, 3. pull 7-10 rebounds per game?

  • Warren

With the departures of Bobo and Moser, should we be concerned or hopeful (as in, do you have any SPECIFIC info about Howland getting more recruits)?

  • Warren

Do you think a coach like Howland is more affected by the 1 and done rule than some of the other coaches, because he takes longer to develop players (like 2-4 years)?

  • Jon
It was cool talking to you at spring practice on Sunday. Is there any way Richard Brehaut takes over the the starting spot from Prince? It looks like if he learns the offense more, he can contribute more to UCLA’s success. Do you think UCLA reaches 9 wins this season?

  • KillaKick

It was nice meeting you at spring practice on Sunday. After what i have been observing, it seems like Richard Breuhat can potentially win the starting postion if Kevin Prince does not make huge strides off of last years 8 touchdowns, is there validity to this argument?
Also do you see UCLA over or under the 9 win plateau for next year?

  • RXBruin

Jon – how would you rate the offensive and defensive units compared to those of last year at this same point in time of spring practice? Better or worse and why?

  • Jed and Gold

Hi Jon, Can you break down some of the positives and negatives of B-Bal recruits we are after like Jon Llyod,D.Burton,Yaguette,Washburn and any sleepers we dont know about?

  • Jed and Gold

How is Donnovan Carter looking at DT and at this moment is he in the rotation?
also please breakdown what we should expect from the SS position now that Ramirez is in the mix.Riley coming in, Stan Mckay up and coming, and Dye back with experience.

  • BigDBruin

Jon, do you think the situation with Howland and Morgan/Moser only weakens his recruiting position with recruits. Especially since it appears that he was either unable to help him improve or he just gave up on Morgan?

  • theuclan

anything new on possible sanctions for the hated ones?

  • BruinBall

How much to you think the Bruins will use this new Pistol offense versus QB under center next season? I sounds like its more then just a gimmick.

  • trueblue

Any updates on the McCallum or Zeigler situations? Also, assumming that playing for their fathers would be their #1 choices, who would be their second choices? Accordingly, how much does the fact that Zeigler’s father was a former UCLA assistant affect his choices?

  • Mario DiLeo

How are DeAnthony Thomas’s academics? Is he even qualified to get into UCLA?

  • bruin95grad

Does the football team ever scrimmage against other schools in the Spring/Fall? In HS we used to have non-contact scrimmages to gauge our progress, see different schemes, etc.

  • Anonymous

When you are reporting stats from the scrimmages is it possible for you to state whether they came against the first or second defense?

Do you know of Any rumored/known candidates to join ben’s staff?

Which 2-3 players round out this recruiting class?

  • BruinInSeattle

Could you give an overview of what you think is going on inside the Bruin basketball program? The dismissals of individuals from the team, Daniels leaving to Gonzaga, whether their is a re-evaluation of current and future talent going on and what this means for Bruin basketball going forward? A lot of individual news stories, but nothing that tries to spin gold from the various straws of hay.

Where in the draft do you think Logan Paulsen will end up if at all.

Your impressions of the FB team so far? much better? not so much?

Is there any correlation between the number of transfers from the basketball program and number of recruits for the 2010 class? In other words, did Howland free up scholarships for who he thinks he will get this year?

  • Anonymous Bruin

In Sunday’s scrimmage, among the LBs I noticed Sean Westgate, n. 11, on the sidelines with a baseball cap instead of a helmet, yet I saw no mention of him being injured. Any word about that?

After having some time to see the team play in spring practice, how is the define line shaping up?

What noticeable difference do you see in Presley that wasn’t there last year?

Besides Daniels leaving, have you heard about any other likely staff changes in hoops?

  • Anon

You have mentioned that Kia looks “huge”. Do you mean this in a good way (i.e., quality weight)? Also, it never seemed to me that his problem was related to size or strength – he just seemed unable to keep quick ends in front of him. Does this ensure that he plays guard if he comes back (and possibly moves Baca back to tackle, unless somebody steps up there)?

  • MaltBaa

so with thigpen and pressley both competing for playing time at the F, and considering how different each are physically, they arent both going to be used the same are they? what is the difference in coaches usage of each?
