Weekly Q&A

Hey guys,

Fire away with questions for this week’s Q&A. Please don’t post new questions on the answers section, because I don’t always check the comments. Save them for next week.

Thanks

    Jon,

how is it going man? Whose idea was it to install the pistol offense? Chow or Neuheisel??

  • lbcbruin

A follow up to my pistol offense question. Do you think chow and neuheisel believe the pistol is the best offensive system possible, and that’s why they’re installing it? or do you think they believe it provides some support for things they want to do. In other words, if they had a dream offensive system. would this be it??

Jon, you once stated that you were not necessarily a UCLA fan- Hey, nobody’s perfect! Us “diehards” will let you slide as you’ve proven yourself quite capable of appeasing us. Besides, with the upswing we’re on, we’ll gladly let you on the bus when you’re ready. So… who do you root for? Have you been more of a college or pro football fan? Who were your idols? Thanks for the insight!

Which Josh Smith should UCLA fans be more excited about in the next bball/football seasons?

How do you decide which questions to answer? Every week I ask a couple and not once have you selected them while at the same time I notice you often answer two or three posted by the same person. Share the love!

Given the average performance of the running backs this spring, do you think manchild Malcolm Jones can come in this summer and compete for a serious shot at time on the field at RB?

  • uclabrruin1989

ok so we whiffed on Zeigler and Macallum and probably will on Jones too. what’s Ben’s plan B?

    Hi Jon,

Once more, I appreciate your work. I hope you can answer a few questions about basketball. First how many more players do you think will Ben Howland pursue for the 2010 class? And with McCallum and Zeigler gone, will Ben Howland go after some recruits that he is not particularly high on? I know with only six scholarship players UCLA has to bring in a few more guys, but is it worth giving out a scholarship just to fill out a roster? Anyway, thanks for your help.

Can you do a little something on Stan H? I believe the entire Bruin Nation is rooting for him.

Given Neuheisel’s penchant for theatrics (helicopter flights to see recruits, loaded quotables, LA Times ads, etc), has he ever made any effort to stack our sidelines with famous alumni like a certain school across town? I’d love to see James Franco or Jack Black helping us bring the glamor and buzz that might attract young recruits tuning in across the country.

USC’s ability to recruit in football has a direct correlation on UCLA’s and vice versa. Given the negative buzz coming from Kiffin’s newly inherited program (humiliating players, getting rid of the fun practice atmosphere Carrol was known for, closing practices) is he in danger of allowing a paradigm shift in the public opinion of recruits towards UCLA? Or more specifically, are we now the fun LA school in the minds of recruits? If so, do you see Neuheisel to be able to continue closing the recruiting gap against USC in his first head to head recruiting year against Kiffin?

jon i’m real excited to see Jones, Lamb, and Josh Smith suit up for UCLA, but what about some other players. Zeigler/McCallum were huge IFs, same goes with Terrence Jones. do you have any info on any specific names that Howland is targeting. Lloyd or Deonte actually get an offer yet? feel like its been way too quiet since we missed out on Ziegler/McCallum. would love to see a SF get an offer as well. what are you hearing?

I’m going to be a Bruin next year and I want to hopefully be a cheerleader. I always wondered how the
cheer squad gets to the games at the Rose Bowl. Do they all carpool the morning of or do they spend the night before at a hotel in Pasadena? Thanks and I like reading your articles in the Daily News.

Do you expect any Bruins to get drafted this week besides Price and Verner?

  • Josh

    Jon

What’s the word on Terrence Jones? Is Howland likely to bring in Burton now that McCallum and Ziegler are off the board? Does Burton not have the SAT scores to warrant a scholarship at this point? He is crazy talented, but I’m wondering why he’s flown under the radar for so long and why it’s taking so long to offer him.

Will the UCLA record books be amended to show that the NCAA stripped FSU of their Emerald Bowl victory against UCLA?

  • hicalliber

How is Hasiak doing this spring? I haven’t heard much about him, which might be a good thing. What are his chances of seeing the field this upcoming season and making a positive impact? Thanks for all your great work on the blog.

what did tom brady and wes welker do at the practice on tuesday since Coach RN announced on twitter that they were going to join the practice that day?

  • goblue

What do you think of the tempo of practice to other programs you have seen?

  • JulianD

Is the pistol going to be our main offense next year? Or are CRN and Chow trying to teach it all this spring and start using are regular offense come fall with some pistol thrown in. And what exactly the pros and cons for the pistol and UCLA’s offense from last year.
    -Thanks ahead of time

Were any of the football players “adopted” by a white family ala “The Blind Side”?

Are there any silent football commits?

Are we going to be able to see the spring game on TV? We can see Texas, Georgia, Florida, Ohio St, etc.

did you ever sense that there were players on the basketball team (other than gordon) who were not well liked by their teammates, and if so, do you think that contributed to team chemistry issues?

How is Chandler coming along at DT?

  • Jed and gold

Jon, Does it worry you at all that CBH did not pull off some recruiting coup like RN has.?
Or is there still home chance of a surprise?

  • Boston Bruin

Will the Spring game be televised, or available on DVD?

What do we like about Burton? Are we recruiting him as a 1 or 2? He seems undersized to be a 2.

Seems like we’re going to be a terrible FT shooting team next year. Our top FT shooters % wise (Roll, Drago) are gone. Lee shot 70%, Nelson 52%, Honeycutt 60%, Anderson 58%, Lane 57%.

  • MaltBaa

have we scrapped the pro style offense or does the revolver run the same plays as the pro just with different options for the qb?

Any players thinking of transferring to UCLA (both sports)?

what have you heard about Darius Bell (Khalil’s brother)?

  • carneyb

Any word on Howland’s replacement for assistant coach? It seems to me Ernie Kent would be a nice fit. He seems to have been able to recruit athletic/skilled players to a school that is no where near as desirable as UCLA.

Why don’t they let Mike Harris play the blindside and let RT be the position to battle it out?

  • Fan4Life

Cal plays Nevada three weeks before UCLA this next season. Should I be worried the novelty of the revolver will have less of an impact when the Bruins play the Bears? Or is it just a matter of execution?

  • Fan4Life

Watching the Mountain West kick the Pac 10′s butt over the last few years, one phrase has become a pet peeve of mine, “Pac 10 level athlete” as well as the related “UCLA level athlete.” Give me a sports related pet peeve of yours or two.

Jon, what’s the latest with Julious Moore and Rykeem Yates? Is Yates planning to greyshirt? Is Moore working to resolve his admissions status? He is not listed a committing to another school yet, so am I wrong to assume he still has a foot in the door?

  • Anonymous

any word on where Dlinemen Julious Moore and Shane Pennix ended up?

  • UCLA ’64

Hey, Jon. I hope the world is treating you well.

FOOTBALL Q: I don’t get the F-back position. Is the F-back on the field at the same time as a tailback, or does he take the place of a tailback? Does the F-back stand directly behind the quarterback, or is he positioned someplace else?

Also, when is the next podcast? I really like those.

    Thanks.

  • VAbruin

    Hey Jon,

Where’s the best place to purchase UCLA tickets for away football games? I’m thinking of going to the game at Texas and don’t want to end up in another sea of orange like I did at Tennessee. Any suggestions?

Ben Olson trying out for the UFL or CFL?

Do you think CRN is or is in the process of changing the pageantry of the Pre-game ceremonies at the Rose bowl(band on the field, music, etc?) Or even the after half time/pre 3rd quarter music to get the players up again?

what players had the most productive spring practice as individuals? or more precisely, who stepped up their game and showed the coaches they deserve playing in fall?
