Weekly Q&A

Hey guys,

Fire away with questions for this week’s Q&A. Please don’t post new questions on the answers section, because I don’t always check the comments. Save them for next week.

I’ll finish off last week’s leftover questions shortly…

Thanks
Jon

Jon, I would be interested in a short article that talks about how baseball recruiting works. We spend a lot of time talking about basketball and football, but I have no idea how it works in baseball. Some of these guys have already been drafted in high school or in college but don’t sign so they are still eligible to play in college…I would assume that they would have some representation to be able to help them through a decision like that, right? But that goes against what we know in BB and FB, where agents can’t be involved. Are the parents left on their own to make the decision if their 18 year old gets drafted in the 5th round by the Mets? Beyond that, how does the recruiting actually work…do teams check out top recruits and not only recruit against each other but recruit against the major leagues and try to steer athletes to college? Would love to hear more details because it seems like it would be far more complicated than with other sports to actually keep a program going.

Any new info as far as an extension for Norm Chow?

  • Robert B.

So now all the talk is about how the new divisions of the Pac-12 (or what have you) will be drawn up, and everyone wants the L.A. schools… What about what we want? Are Chancellor Block and Dan Guerrero making their voices heard and fighting for what’s best for U.C.L.A. in all this? And what do you think would be the best scenario for the Bruins?

  • UCLASteve

How come the previously published comments regarding your post about you being out of town and unable to post new messages were removed and then the comments section shut down? Yes, the comments were quite negative regarding your posting “style” and “habits”, but it seems this was a clear form of censorship related directly towards the negative statements. Can you clarify and would you rather bloggers not make improvement suggestions?

  • spedjones

At this point, who of the recruiting class of 2010 is NOT likely to step foot on campus due to grade issues? Related, what up with Marquis Jackson?

  • gerry4ucla

We’ve been striking out on a lot of elite QBs these part few years. What is your feeling about Hundley? And would the coaches have a meltdown if he goes someway else?

  • UCLA ’64

    Hey Jon,

First, thanks for responding to my question about why Savage started Bauer instead of Cole.

Another rumor for you to quash or confirm: Are the Bruins changing their uniforms from our beloved powder blue color to the awful dark blue, navy blue, or whatever else is too common for words? As you can see, I have a strong bias, but I have read the rumors around the Internet.

How is USC still getting recruits to commit?

  • BruinFaithful

Jon, Can you please give us a list of the Lineman at the camp this weekend? Do the players do drills with current players on the roster or other prospects? If not, would it be an NCAA violation to do drills with current players? It seems many of our Top OL prospects were not in attendance, is this correct? If so why? And if many of the top talent was not there, isn’t it nothing more than a bunch of scrubs beating each other up, with the top scrub looking like King of the Hill? If this is so, what was the exact efficacy of the camp?

Considering the USC sanctions, does this mean we have a chance to to keep the score within 2 TDs the next few years? I love going to these games but it’d be nice to feel like we at least have a chance come 4th quarter.

Over/under on the last time spedjones spent the night with a woman? 2002?

Did Texas play the PAC 10 for a better TV deal? Were we just pawns in the Big 12 chess game?

  • Ben G

From your time at SDSU, what was your take on Tony Gwynn?

  • Anonymous

What do you think UCLA will do with the extra money a new TV deal will provide now that we’re the Pac-12? What do you think they should do?

  • Bruin JD

Any info on Lakewood (Calif.) offensive lineman Torian White? Saw that he has committed to the Bruins, but he’s only rated as a 2* prospect. With how short we are on scholies for next year, I was surprised that we targeted him. Are Neu and Norm just seeing something that no one else is?

    Hi Jon,

In your opinion why do UCLA fans have such an inferiority complex? (I started following UCLA/USC blogs recently for local info on Texas potentially joining the Pac-10)

UCLA has a pretty decent athletic program. Which is why I’m surprised that their fans behave like USC’s little brother.

    Thanks Jon

At the time, it seemed Chip Brown was squarely on top of the Pac16 reportage. After the fact, it seemed as though Brown (and everyone else) was played by Texas…do you still have a high opinion of Brown or does the fact he was spoon fed and then regurgitated the UT game plan diminish him in your eyes? For the life of me, I cannot understand how the other schools in the Big12 conference can live with such an underhanded university.

  • tim warren

Any comment on the Garrett and Kiffin responses after the penalties came down? Garrett said others were jealous of the Trojans while Kiffin said u$c has bounced back in the past after previous probations. Wouldn’t some contrition be in order?

  • 909Bruin

hey Jon, what do you think of our RB coach? Clearly he’s a decent recruiter if he helping to land the RB’s that we’ve had the past 3 classes. BUT… to have Knox, Dean, and Carter not be able to crack the rotation or even sniff the field is head scratching. Is he developing the players properly or are kids over hyped coming in? Thanks

What’s the early word on where the new Pac-12 championship football game will be played? One assumes the Rose Bowl as the first choice…Also, could you see it rotating among some of the big pro stadiums in the region?

  • Anonymous

What’s the early word on the location of the Pac-12 hoops tournament? Will it stay at Staples every year despite the expansion?

  • Anonymous

Do you think the new Pac 12 (and its coaches) will have the guts to keep up the full round-robin in basketball (which I presume would mean moving a few conference games into December). Do you think that’s even a good idea?

  • Anonymous

What are the implications for being on the NCAA administered “probation?”

  • Carmel Bruin

Jon, I have not closely followed college baseball, but am paying a lot of attention now that the Bruins are in the CWS. It seems as if college coaches are allowing their starting pitchers to sometimes go way over 100 pitches per game. What do they know that major league managers don’t? Thanks.

  • UCLABZ

I think diving is killing soccer…. Do you think FIFA will make any effort to deal with the worst perpetrators? It seems to me, if they give out suspensions after the game for obvious dives the practice would disappear.

Getting Texas and Oklahoma in to the Pac-10 would have dramatically increased the conference’s national visability. What does adding Colorado and Utah do for the conference?

  • UCLABZ

What do you think the rotation is going to look like through the rest of the world series (assuming UCLA keeps advancing)?

  • 909Bruin

how many QB’s do we take in this class? and who do you think those QB’s will be? thanks

  • Gourmand

What is your review of the famous Zesto’s in Omaha?

  • Anonymous

I recall last year you were kind of tossed into covering UCLA football on an interim basis during pre-season workouts. Nevertheless, you dived right in and made it seem like you’d been on the beat for years. So, a few questions…like what did you do to prepare? What did you know about UCLA going into the assignment? What do you remember from that first day and what was it like?
(PS, congrats on your first anniversary covering UCLA)

Uh oh…Seantrel didn’t show at USC’s orientation. Speculation is that Miami and Ohio State may still be options, but if I remember correctly we were on his list at one point. Any chances Neu has his number?

Is there any chance that Sean Sheller could get a medical redshirt and be granted a 6th year of eligibility?

How soon will Trevor Bauer be able to pitch again?
