Weekly Q&A

| | Comments (47) |

Hey guys,

Fire away with questions for this week's Q&A. Please don't post new questions on the answers section, because I don't always check the comments. Save them for next week.

I'll finish off last week's leftover questions shortly...

Thanks
Jon

How 'bout them Bruins on the diamond this year?

Hi Jon,

Can you find out NOW who the network is that is going to give Beebee and the Big 12 all this money that is being talked about and how that will effect the PAC and Big 10 as far what they will be asking for?

It's shocking how little the PAC 10 receives in TV monies.

Was Jerry Neuheisel offered a scholarship that would count against next year's class or as a preferred walk-on? If the former, why? Not that the Neuheisels need it, but does the university knock off part of the tuition for kids of faculty/employees?

Offensive line and wide receiver have been a huge point of focus for UCLA in the 2011 recruiting season, but we keep on missing on both. Marcus Martin and Blackwell have committed to USC, Andre Yruretagoyena and Kasen Williams just cut us from their list. Why are we having so many issues getting high caliber recruits at those positions this year?

so the JC semester has been over for quite some time now. When are we going to here about Darius Bell? Does he have summer classes to complete or something?

Im hearing Brett HUndley is going to be on campus this week, you think you can get an interview for us even though youll be in Omaha? What are the chances he commits to you before CRN?

If USC appeals, the appeals process will basically take them past signing day next year, meaning they will play this year (and bowl game) and recruit as though there are no sanctions in place. I know that officially any team can ask current juniors/seniors if they are interested in transferring...do you know if that would be extended another year (to current soph) if the appeal fails?

now what odds what you give Utah of coming to the Pac 10? Also, are you single? my gay brother wants to know ;)

How does the PAC 10 respond now that Texas declined their invitation, and what happens to the BCS?

Resource Guy said:

Any updates on Maka or Koster? Does either one have decent shot at playing this year? Both looked great on highlight films. Koster looks like Christian Taylor...a coach on the field.

What are your thoughts on the severity of the u$c penalties when compared to penalties recently levied on other schools for similar offenses?

Hey Jon, wanna do my bootcamp? 44 workouts for $200. Great deal! Also, with the commitment of Marcus Martin to USC is the crenshaw pipeline to UCLA done?

Bernie said:

Just asking. USC can fill their limited scholarships with all the 3 star offensive linemen they want. That's all their gonna get. And give it time, the damage will be devastating. Just answering.

In your opinion, does filing for appeal help or hurt SC and why?

Now that the Bush saga is over, is the NCAA going to investigate the other allegations that took place after they started that investigation? For instance, Joe McKnight? Or, do those unofficially get swept into the current ruling?

Explain how PAC 10 is is better off now, cause I don't see it with Colorado and Utah (if they are really lucky)? I give commissioner credit for going for it, but if there is a conference title game now, we could hurt ourselves like Big 12 and SEC title games. Oh, and the phrase, "don't mess with Texas" isn't an accident.

Do we have to wait for a Latina US President before UCLA football can score on a consistent basis?

If Chow so hot, why aren't QB recruits killing themselves to come here? Maybe because they weren't in high school yet last time Chow relevant in college?

Don't see how there will be enough demand for Colorado and maybe Utah for new PAC 10 network? What is so attractive without new football powers?

With the addition of Colorado and maybe Utah do you see a Pac12 championship in football in 2012 or ??

Hey Jon, will this just be embarrasing for us if USC continues to out recruit us and beat us on the field despite their hardships? I hope we can turn things around but the recent commitments don't seem to look good.

Any word on how Lane's recovery is going?

Have you had a change to see Stover this offseason and how is he looking?

Knowing what we know about the football team post spring practice which incoming freshmen do you see pushing for major roles this season?

Mr. Gold, first off congrats on UCLA making it to the CWS.
Now onto my beloved USC program, I recently read a piece from Bruce Feldman citing creative ways that Miami used during its probationary recruiting period such as giving a football player a scholarship from a different sport (e.g track), from your understanding could USC use this loophole? An example would be giving Farmer and Thomas a track scholarship instead of a football scholarship thus freeing up two more football spots. Thank you in advance.

JG Any update on Maka? Bell the QB? What did Julius Moore end up doing? I liked that guy. He was our 1st commit last year.

Can we rescind the invite to Colorado? They suck. So PAC 10 thinks since they have a big alum base in Cal that they will go to see them more? Why would they see a crummy team?

How many scholarships is a team allowed to give out each year? also why does UCLA have only 13 to give out this year? and they gave out 23 to the class coming in? I'm confused.

Pac-12 w/ Colorado and Utah....

So what teams would you guess are going to be in each of the 2 divisions?

Darrell Scott to UCLA since Knox is out...true or false?

Should we take him?

Dear Brian - As a writer who covers UCLA - how do you feel about your fan base posing questions regarding USC? And do you believe UCLA fans are a bit "over the top" regarding their "beat 'SC at all costs" mentality - when USC fans could give a rats a$$ about UCLA sports... Thanks in advance for your response.

Has UCLA baseball gotten over the hump this year and can we expect it to be a consistent winner now, or was this year the exception rather than the rule?

Did you hear the radio interview from ESPN's Arash Markazi re: $UC's football program. He is the 1st SC alum in the media that basically said the football program was out of control. Are u surprised that nobody in the SC admin/coaches has ever admitted/apologized for their errors and vowed to correct them? Seems like they are all on crack and still in denial. When is Garret going to get fired?

Mike H class of 90 said:

With the addition of other Big-12 members off the table, has there been any talk of other teams (like TCU (Texas TV market and recruiting), Colorado State (for the Colorado rivalry) or perhaps Houston or someone else to add to Utah? I know these names aren't the same as Texas/OU but you could still create a viable 2 division scenario with Texas, SLC and Denver markets for TV deals...

can you give a little insight on how an expanded pac-10 with a better tv contract will benefit the member schools, specifically UCLA?

How was the Big-12 (minus Nebraska & Colorado) able to put togeather a superior TV contract then they had before (with those two school)?

Are all members benefiting or is basically Texas is going to get a seperate "better" deal than the other schools?

Does the conference shuffling end after this off-season or does the Big-10 & Pac-10 make a run at Big-12 teams next off-season as well?

USC was able to continue harvesting talent in spite of the threat of sanctions the past 3 years. Now that the sanctions are here, what role will the sanctions will play in eliminating the ability of USC to entice elite players?

Mike H class of 90 said:

Wolf is reporting that "The NCAA's Financial Aid is proposing a new rule that could have impications for USC if it eventually loses 30 football scholarships due to last week's sanctions.
One rule change would allow ``student-athletes to void their athletic scholarship if they receive a better non-athletic financial aid package.''
Under current rules, this can happen only if a coach writes it into a letter-of-intent agreement."

Isn't that just begging big money schools to provide "non-athletic" scholarships and end up with essentially 150 football players on scholarship? Have you heard about this?
