Weekly Answers, Pt. 10

1) Hundley - a bruin or not? - spedjones
Wouldn't bet my house on it...but maybe my car.
2) Do you have someone to fill in for you when you're gone? - MichaelRyerson
During the season, Jill Painter fills in occasionally, but when she has other duties, it's all me. Hence the absence on the blog on some days.
3) What do you think would be the optimal number of OL recruits to bring in this year? DT? - Peter
If they have 15-17 scholarships, 4-5 should be OL and 2-3 should be DL. They need legit line depth.
4) I can't see Barr on defense, barring injury on defense UCLA needs his offensive skill sets; TE or receiver I think will exploit his talent. - kevlabry
I take a different angle on hybrid players like Barr, and I always lean towards beefing them up and putting them at linebacker or safety. Just my style. If he's as explosive as advertised, and by all indications he is, I could be wrong.

Does the athletic department have any plans to commemorate Coach Wooden during the upcoming seasons for all the various sports, especially basketball? Special armbands/insignias on the uniforms, perhaps? - Steve B.
Many different scenarios to honor Coach Wooden are in the works, but as far as I know, nothing has been decided yet. Obviously, the baseball team got it started with the JW initials on the hats, but that's the beginning I'm sure.

First, you are a wonderful reporter and analyst. We are blessed to have your hard work and excellent insight. Many thanks and please keep it up!!
Second, has anyone considered a life-size bronze of Coach? I was just on the campus at Hillsdale College in Michigan where sculptor Bruce Wolfe has rendered several life-size or even larger, e.g., Maggie Thatcher, Churchill, Lincoln, Jefferson, etc. -- each in a wonderful pose. Coach with a rolled-up program (in his seat in Pauley? Patrolling the sideline?) would be exciting and respectful. Samples online at Bruce Wolfe.com I don't know the guy and had to look him up. See also hillsdale.edu and type in Bruce Wolfe.

Let's give our softball team some credit: they wore black wrist bands that said JW in the WCWS. It was cool to have both teams make the finals to bring more opportunities to honor JW.
A life-sized bronze of Coach Wooden is a wonderful idea. Perhaps sitting in his chair with the rolled up prgram looking back over his shoulder to make eye contact with Nell as happened every single time I saw a game at Pauley. If there's a fund raising for it, count me in.
I like you better than Dohn personally. He could be a bit "i'm a journalist" like that made him as objective as God or something. You both do a great job, but you seem more down to earth, so **** the haters.
Bronze (or any) scuplture would be a great idea. I like the idea of having Coach sitting in his chair for all of eternity.
Bruce Wolfe is amazing. So are Omri and Julie Amrany. Would rather see a local, maybe even UCLA artist get the job, though.
Coach Wooden would probably not want a statue, but a sculpture that shows him and his beloved wife Nell would be appropriate.
@55 Bruin
GREAT IDEA.
"Coach with a rolled-up program in his seat in Pauley."
This is it! Coach always said that his coaching took place in the gym. No need for theatrics during game time. I think those who never had the privilege of seeing him in person would probably not realize how "unemotional" he seemed as he intensely observed the game from his seat.
Gold is better than Dohn is better than Wolf
Wolf will answer 1 or 2 questions at a time, and then call it a day
One thing-- Gold, Dohn and Wolf are impartial, which beats the pants off all the panting, dribbling SC and ucla posters.

I wish Jill would post more, maybe give her top 10 players she would like to see Khalil Bell play with. The Brett Farve post is still the funniest thing ever on this blog.
Coach Wooden consistently said that he did not want any type of statue of him anywhere on campus. Remember he was against naming the court at Pauley after him unless Nell's name came first. I think retiring his seat behind the bench is a beautiful tribute to Coach. It will show Coach watching over the UCLA Basketball program as he did for 35 years after retiring. The banners in the rafters do plenty to show Coach's accomplishment as a coach. It also opens new generations to learn about Coach as fathers and mothers can explain to sons and daughters why the seat behind the bench is left open every game.
@Be Real, aka Lawyer John,
The State Bar of California has been trying to contact you for several months now, and you have not responded to our inquiries.
We have had numerous complaints of attorney misconduct via the Complaint Hotline and the attorney discipline system on the State Bar Web site. Not only the shear number of complaints concerns us, but also the pattern of complaint about inattention during consultation, such as “He typed incessantly while I explained the reason for my need for representation,” “The attorney seemed transfixed at the computer, giggling to himself while typing,” and also “I couldn’t concentrate on explaining my plight, as my eyes were assaulted by the unending mustard and red colors throughout the small office near 21st and South Alvarado. It may be nauseated.”
We even had the Pico-Union Library complain that you have disturbed other patrons at the public computers numerous times by blurting out: “Fight On;” blubbering in uncontrollable crying, “Pete, please come back;” and “Mike G., I’ll be happy to represent the U. at all inquiries, legal and extra legal, at my usual pre-discounted ‘United States China’ Marketing fee schedule.”
Please contact so we can review this situation to ensure that your clients are receiving the best possible professional help from you, although realizing the minimum standard of the California Rules of Professional Conduct would be a high benchmark for you to attain considering your ‘education.’
RE statue of Coach Wooden - Statues of Coach Wooden and Nell - Coach looking back at Nell in the stands(as he did at the beginning of every game while she was alive) would probably have been appreciated by Coach.
