Weekly Answers, Pt. 6

Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...

1) You mentioned Andrew Abbott look great last year. Is he going to get any PT this year, maybe at the nickel? - Anonymous
Yes, he should start at the nickel and he looked very good during the spring. I really like this kid's game.

2) Do you know if Trevor Bauer is playing anywhere this summer? - Anonymous
He's not playing in a summer baseball league, but he's training around Houston. He was there last summer, too, in addition to pitching for Team USA.

3) Who would you say your top three Pac-10 coaches are? (Mine are Riley, Harbaugh and Kelly.) - Anonymous
So are mine, in no particular order, though with big seasons, Sarkisian and Neuheisel join the conversation.

4) How are the incoming freshmen progressing this summer? Any updates on J Smith, M Carlino, or L Jones? - Bobby
I've heard very, very good things on Lazeric Jones, both as a distributor and as a "team guy." He seems to be acclimating quite well. Carlino is good at what he's good at, and he'll just need to get bigger and older to make an impact. Smith, well, if Smith cuts weight, he'll be fantastic.

5) How much weight has Sheldon Price put on? Who do you think is better? Price or Hester? - Anonymous
Last year, Price was listed at 155. Now he's listed at 178. His goal is around 180, which is adequate for someone his size. I like Hester better because I tend to support bigger cornerbacks over the faster, and Hester is definitely not afraid of contact.

While I can't really fault the job he's done, so far I see Kelly as a coach who has benefitted tremendously from his predecssor's work. For me the top 3 would include Riley, Harbaugh, and whoever wins most next season among Tedford, Stoops, Neuheisel, and Sarkisian. For Kelly, I need at least one more year to say much. Maintaining a good program is a bit easier than building one up.

Regarding the coaching hierarchy, this is a difficult call because the talent of each school is not even. Given good talent some of the posters on this blog, or heavens to betsy even I, would probably win a few games at the least.

That said, Stanford and Oregon State have really surprised because it is difficult to recruit to those schools. Stanford, because you have to have a brain to play there, and Oregon State because, well, because it is in Oregon.

Locally, and who cares about anything outside of L.A. around here, the SC-ucla outcome will determine if Neu' or Kiff' owns Los Angeles, although ucla will have an advantage this year because the game is on its home field.

UCLA is still at least a year away from competing for a top-three finish in the Conference. If the coaching staff remains intact and if we continue to pull in highly regarded players, we will be kicking major ass in 2012. With Neuheisel's passion for the school and the game, he will bring us a Pac-10 Championship within the next 3-4 years. Create domination on the LOS, offensively and defensively, and the championships will come.
