Weekly Answers, Pt. 4

Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...

1) What happened to Reggie Carter? I'm just a know-nothing-UW Fan but the few times I saw UCLA play the last few years, he looked amazing. He was supposed to be a high NFL pick heading into the season and then didn't get drafted. I see people on this board mourning the graduation of AV all the time, but not Carter. What am I missing? - UW Fan
Carter was a good player, but he was very banged up last year, and it affected his play. Toward the end of the season, he was in pretty bad shape. I'm surprised he hasn't caught on with a team, but football is a cruel game.

2) Do you think the fall scrimmage was a success? I was there and thought we looked pretty decent (compared to previous years at this time), but some reports had an opposite opinion. - Anonymous
I thought overall the scrimmage was a plus, and it's pretty clear with the receivers that there will be some big plays, but football is also about the little plays. I was talking about this with someone yesterday: Unless I'm proven wrong, I expect the same offensive struggles with consistency as last season, but a handful more big plays. They still appear to struggle with biting off 80 yards in a prolonged drive. They start with 6, then get 16, then 3, then 2, then 18, then zero, then 3 and then zero, and a field goal. If the running game improves and they can get the necessary first downs - and really, this means if Norm Chow, the playcaller, feels confident enough to call for a short run when needed - then the offense can make strides.

3) Where does Max Wittek end up signing? - UW Fan
USC

4) Based on what you've seen of Prince/Brehaut now, which QB would you say has more upside? Is there any chance Brehaut starts over a healthy Prince this season? - Tien
Brehaut has looked good in practice, but that's primarily tested his physical skills. Brehaut can throw. He can move. He can lead. But can he stay poised in the pocket? Can he shake off a bad fumble? Can he not telegraph a pass? Prince is more poised in the pocket and the arm is there, too. I think Brehaut can turn into a very, very good quarterback. But he's not perfect yet.

5) It's early, but at this point, what's your predicted score for the KSU game? - UW Fan
24-20, UCLA

I don't think anyone ever thought that Carter would be a "high NFL pick." Maybe late round at best, but I don't think anyone thought he'd go anywhere in the top half of the draft.

Jon,
Thanks again!

Considering both Prince and Brehaut are sophomores, the only way Brehaut will play is if Prince gets hurt. So him turning into a very, very good QB won't do us any good (unless Prince gets hurt as I said).

I agree. Prince and Brehaut being the same year creates an issue to me.
Does anyone think Brehaut passes Prince at some point and becomes the starter?
Otherwise, red shirting him this year or next year and letting Crissman and Bell back him up would make more sense to me. Especially since we don't have anyone behind them at all.

Prince will get injured this season. It's a given. He hasn't been healthy in over 3 years, dating back to high school. Let's hope his injuries don't keep UCLA from doing well. Because practice, repetition, and consistency is key to winning. If your QB is always in and out and missing the chance to improve timing with his receivers, reading live defenses, etc., then he's a detriment.
I hope this is his breakout year.
But if he gets another major injury, it's time to move on. The team can't wait forever. They have to move away from, "maybe next year" and feel the urgency to win now.
