Weekly Answers, Pt. 6
Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...
1) When Colorado joins what will be then be known as the Pac-12, Neuheisel will have been the head coach of three different football teams in the conference. Has any other person ever been the head coach of three different football teams in the Pac 10 (formerly Pac 8)? Same question re any other major conference. - Jungleland
Thanks to some attentive readers, I've learned that Dennis Erickson coached three Pac-10 teams (WSU, OSU, ASU). Great trivia question.
2) I was watching Dietrich Riley's highlight videos and he's really talented. Do you see him overtaking Hillard at some point and if not, what steps do you see the staff taking to maximize his talents? Also, what do you think of our OL commits to this point? I know they're projects, but do they project to have a real impact or just provide depth? - Choneyrun19
I think Riley will have a chance to be the starter sooner than later. I've been very impressed by him. I think the OL commits are projects, but projects with big payouts. I'm always an advocate of bringing in linemen to start three or four years down the line, because they'll be much stronger by then.
3) Do you see the ucla football team being over rated or underrated by the media? - Benji
Underrated, but not by much.
4) As Stephen Colbert would phrase the question: "USC Trojans -- great football program, or greatest football program?" - Objective UCLA Fan
Great football program that became legendary for some time and is now back to just great.
5) Why accept new questions... did you even get to any of the questions asked last week? - UCLABZ
I try to stay a week ahead with questions, so that I don't run out. Some weeks, there aren't a ton of questions.

Just a note to the sad little Trojan who named himself "Objective UCLA Fan" so that he could seek backhanded praise for his beloved football team. It seems you, my poor little friend, are in need of some daily affirmation. So, this is for you. Just look in the mirror and repeat out loud:
"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."
Do you get to be considered a great football program or the greatest football program if most of what you've achieved was built on cheating? USC football program great cheaters or greatest cheaters? They shouldn't even be in the conversation in the same way as steriod using baseball players shouldn't be considered for the Hall of Fame.
Since bruins obviously have an axe to grind with SC's football legacy, and understandably so, they will continue to hypocritically misstate the facts. There was no evidence that SC knew about Bush's situation. Bush cheated. SC did not. And no court in America would have convicted SC.

"Be Real/ Lawyer John"
I don't know why you need several user names..??
How do bruins 'hypocritically misstate the facts'? Seems as though the NCAA hammered SC with the evidence they saw without any legal power... Imagine if they could have interviewed and had access to financial records, subpoena power, etc..
Please refrain from defending Pete, Bush, and SC regarding this, it is pathetic.
Now regarding where we are ranked, I agree that we are underrated and I would say by a lot. I think our D will be top third pac 10 and our offense will be as well.. we have plenty of playmakers on both sides of the ball and our o line will be fine. I think we will be turning a lot of heads when we enter Austin 3-0
Go Bruins,
Hollywood Bruin
Hey Lawyer John,
Did you work on the Pro-Proposition Eight team? Because they argued their case in the same way you argue suc's case, without logic or facts.
PS This isn't a pro or anti prop eight post, just on how bad the pro-eight lawyers were.
Well, Lawyer John, since you seem to post with half a brain let me see if I can help you with the other half, the half that's missing. Among other things (and there were more than a few) 'SC was found guilty of Lack of Institutional Control, i.e. not maintaining sufficient oversight to assure compliance with NCAA guidelines. In other words, and in a context with which you are likely personally familiar, ignorance is not a defense. If they truly didn't know about Bush (which I find unlikely) that in itself is a clear violation of the rules. Further, they're going to lose their appeal. Take it to the bank.
LJ:
You are really giving yourself a bad name now. You have never been quite so dense as in this post. As Jon posted on 7-31-10, people are seeing through Pete Carroll's play-dumb approach. With that in mind, I have to believe what people at BN say about typical trojan fans. They want to be proud of their program, so they blind themselves to the fact that cheating happened there. They look the other way when the practices are filled with agents, snoop, ferrel, and other celebs. They take the criminal defense attorney attitude that actual guilt is not the issue, saying that proof of wrongdoing is required to take down southern cal's program. What happened to your integrity man? It used to be that we could point you out and say "He is a trojan fan, but he is real" ... not so any longer. If Pete knew, sc knew by definition. Everybody who is honest knows that Pete knew about Bush and his indiscretions. Swallow your pride and accept it. In the late 90s or early 2000s, trojan higher-ups made a choice to get back their alleged 'tradition' at whatever cost. They began to steer down the path to make that happen, including finding a way to skirt the system and have players receive improper funding while playing for sc. Bush was too obvious with his payoff, and was the main one caught. The general public doesn't have a clear idea how many trojan players received money like this, so the NCAA only named Bush. Was it many more than OJ and Reggie? We know BP pointed out the limo ride offered to him by trojans led by pc/garrett. Do we believe that is the only other time trojans cheated? They cheated, didn't care because it served their purpose. Their program's power grew because the NCAA allowed the cheating to happen. What bothers UCLA fans is that the trojan 'legacy' is built on cheating, not that the trojans won so many games while Bush was there. You don't have the huevos to admit this, and none of your fellow trojan fans are coming out to admit it, but the facts are there. It is extremely true to form for trojans to continue their lives in denial.

In a nutshell, Pete Carroll struck a deal with the devil. When Carroll left, the devil cashed the check. Guess who was left holding the check? LOL
"There was no evidence that SC knew about Bush's situation." another swing and miss by The Paralegal!!
i guess the fact that Southern Cal coach Todd McNair, was photographed with, shared phone calls with and attended parties with the New Era Boyz doesn't count as evidence?? that is a lame legal analysis even for an old Paralegal!! add that McNair got caught lying and his "alibi witness" blew up in his face, and that is what is called evidence, Paralegal old boy!!
the Southern Cal smackdown by the NCAA shows the system works...the wheels sometimes turn slow, but eventually Southern Cal was appropriately humiliated and stripped. so sugar sweeeeeet!!!
Fine, bruins, you had your say.
It is fruitless to argue with those with petrified reasoning.
And what does Prop-8 have to do with the instant discussion? (but as an aside, 50 years hence most Americans will look back with scorn on how same-sex folks were once denied equal protection)
"Lack of institutional control" is a laughable reason to punish. What does it mean? Where is the evidence, Sherlock?-- Oh, yeah, Carroll was the anti-coach, and allowed entrance to anybody who wanted to watch SC practice football. Well, most objective humans would say that was 'pretty cool.'
And speaking of objective, it will not be found in any serious discussion between SC vs ucla followers-- too much built-in prejudice to see clearly, kind of like trying to convert a Muslim to Christianity or Judaism. Probably ain't gonna happen
And the above bruin rhetoric underscores how ucla does have an SC axe to grind. I am only thankful we're not in 5th century England where y'all would do more than simply grind your axe when spotting my neck.
LAWYER JOHN
(P.S. Dohn kicked me off the blog when one day I sarcastically wrote, "Perhaps my new friends on the ucla blog will buy me that newly published ucla football book."-- Pretty heavy satire, huh, certainly worthy of censorship, right? Thanks, Dohn, have a great life)
P.S.2 Sports is fun-and-games, entertainment only, let's get-down-and-silly stuff
But how 'bout getting serious about nuclear arms proliferation and the over-heating of the planet. There is not much time. The only thing riding is the future of our children and their children. No big deal, right, not with the SC-ucla football game coming up in a few months.
Oh, excuse me, time for me to get off my soapbox and get to work, it's almost 6 a.m.!
Lawyer John, laughable or not, Lack of Institutional Control is a specific, formal NCAA guideline the violation of which can result in sanctions. Sneer all you like, the fact is 'SC needs the NCAA more than the NCAA needs 'SC. If ya wanna talk the talk, ya gotta walk the walk. You signed on and agreed to abide by the regulations as set down by the NCAA and now all we hear from you little yappers is how stupid the rules are. Grow up.
well put Ryerson. while most trOJies have progressed through the stages of grieving, some remain mired in an interminable morass of Denial.
as is normally the case, it is the kooks who tend to be the most vocal. take The Paralegal for example, he claims to be in the legal profession, yet he is strangely blind to both the hard and circumstantial evidence in the case.
most of the Southern Cal folk i know admit the obvious: the athletic dept was out of control, disdainful of the rules and stubborn to a tragic degree.
Lawyer John Or Toilet John...whatever your real name is....a couple of words of wisdom for you...
SHUT UP!
I have followed Lawyer John's posts for many years and take much of his informed criticism to heart. The only thing is, I don't believe this current Lawyer John is the same one as I grew to admire. Where are the clever retorts and the inaccurate court jargon? This Lawyer can't hold a candle to the previous one. Bring back the original Lawyer John! I miss his legless legalese!!! I miss his hysterical attempts to appear educated and learned in the Science of Law. Come back, Lawyer John!! We weely weely miss ya!!! By the way, $UC shoulda been given the DEATH PENALTY. They are one very lucky (and politically favored) school of heehaw education.
Hey Gold, Nice work on your training camp spread. Why don't you link to your own work on the blog?

Not sure what all the fuss is about. I find it fascinating that BR/LJ constantly visits a college football blog to constantly remind the readers of that blog how unimportant college football is, and how he's so above it all.
And this time around, he managed to touch on the pressing topics of Prop-8, nuclear weapons, and climate change - Fantastic stuff as always!!
Thanks for answering the question, Jon. As an objective UCLA fan, I appreciate your fair and thoughtful response. I only wish that more of my fellow UCLA fans could achieve such a clear-eyed view.
