Sad news for Houston

| | Comments (15) |

The Houston Cougars got some more bad news today, and it's pretty sad.
Heisman hopeful Case Keenum suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in UCLA's 31-13 win over the No. 23 Cougars at the Rose Bowl last night.
Keenum went down in the second quarter, after completing 11-of-19 passes for 87 yards and two interceptions.
It gets worse.
Keenum's backup Cotton Turner, who has been effective in relief, broke his clavicle and will also miss the rest of the season.
Terrance Broadway is now up for Houston, and he played well late against the Bruins, completing 5-of-8 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.

That's a shame. Here's to a complete and speedy recovery.

Go Bruins!

Wow, sorry to hear those news. Good luck to Houston the rest of the year, and I wishes for a speedy recovery, to Keenum and Turner.

I was very impressed with the 3rd. string QB that came in the game though, the guy is a really good runner with a strong arm and tough to bring down.

Both QBs in one night? That's tough!! Gotta feel bad for Houston.

That sounds like something that would have happened to us. Maybe this bad luck monkey (gorilla is probably more like it) is finally getting off our backs...

Sad that both Keenum's injuries came off interceptions. We were sitting behind Houston's bench and watched Broadway warm up. First of all, what a great name for a QB. Immediately, it was apparent he's a talented thrower and sure enough, he showed that Houston has a lot to look forward to in the coming years.

I think UCLA fans can have a special sympathy with Houston. At least they got hurt in a full contact game.

Seriously I feel horrible for those guys. Does Keenun have any more eligibility? Can he get a medical red shirt?

I wasn't real proud of the hit on Turner.

That hit on Turner was arguably a late one too.

I can't believe a player from another team that don't wear Adidas can suffer a freak leg injuries. Keenum must have tripped over Ayers' Adidas cleats which cause the ligaments around his knee to explode. That is the only reasonable explanation since we know for a fact that freak leg injuries never happen in Nikes.

The hit on Turner was not a late hit. It was clean and powerful. That's why the coaches have put Patrick MLB. He also showed great technique in causing the fumble. Hat right on the ball. This kid is dynamite.

Wow. Unbelievably sad new for Houston fans & Keenum. From Heisman candidate & potential 1st round draft pick to who knows. Hopefully he'll recover fully and play another year or move on the NFL. He's some more info from the Orlando Sentinel. Looks like he might have the option to do a medical redshirt.

"Keenum, who was a Heisman Trophy candidate, injured his knee when he was trying to tackle a UCLA linebacker Akeem Ayers returning an interception.

Keenum finished the season with 636 yards passing on a 66 percent completion percentage, while also throwing five touchdown passes. He ranks among the top-10 in the NCAA in five career passing categories -- 14,448 yards of total offense (7th nationally), 13,586 passing yards (5th nationally), 107 touchdown passes (8th nationally), 1,626 pass attempts (10th nationally), 1,118 pass completions (7th nationally).

If he had maintained the passing pace set during his sophomore and junior seasons, he would have set the NCAA career passing record.

It is unclear how the injury could impact Keenum's potential pro career.

Keenum redshirted his true freshman year. He may be eligible for a medical redshirt if he wants to return to Houston for another season.

NCAA rules state a player must participate in less than 20 percent of the season and suffer a season-ending injury to be eligible for a medical hardship waiver. Three games of a 12-game regular season is 25 percent, however, Keenum didn't participate in all four quarters of Houston's contests this season. He has played 97 minutes – or 13.5 percent of a 12-game regular season – according to statistics on the Houston website.

Keenum was wary of potential injuries during the offseason.

He has been targeted heavily by opposing defenses throughout his career, so Keenum changed his diet and adjusted his workouts to add 15 pounds to his 6-foot-2 frame during the summer.

"I lifted more weights to try to be healthier throughout the season," Keenum said during Conference USA football media day in July. "Just there are those games you're going to take a pounding, so trying to be a little more healthy is definitely a plus."

During the UCLA game, Houston played four quarterbacks. Sumlin was forced to eventually send in true freshman Terrance Broadway, a four-star prospect expected to redshirt this season."

Truly unfortunate.

One commentator at the Chronicle site implied UCLA played a dirty game. Not from where I sat. There were some hospital hits delivered by both sides. There were some mistakes attributable to youth, but I thought at least one of the personal fouls called was a bit mickey-mouse. I guess it's all from where you watch the game.

Perhaps Keenum will get a medical red shirt if he wants to play another year. Broadway was spectacular, especially given that he was the third stringer and a planned red-shirt. How may reps could he have had?

A real shame. A nice program on the rise and by all accounts a couple of good guys. Here's to full recoveries and a medical red shirt or two. Broadway's got a load of talent.

Cosmic pay back for the Freddie Mitchell injury against Houston. Word was at the time that Houston played some dirty ball.

Sad blow for Keenum, but I don't see why he would petition for a 6th year and risk another injury when he probably still should be a high draft pick
