Weekly Answers, Pt. 3

Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...

1) You and others have alluded to silent commits (football). Are any of these considered elite prospects (say top-10 at their position)? - Ryan
Yes.

2) A writer at another paper reported that about half the UCLA team ran straight off the field Saturday without congratulating Kansas State on its victory. He wrote that they were led off the field by assistant coach Bob Palcic of the Bruins. Can you confirm this story? And if it's true, what is your take on it? - Anonymous

Yes, it's true, and I think it's crap. I was taught differently.

3) My question deals with the "report card." I pretty much get all of it, except for one - why the C- for the running backs? Your comment appears to be directed towards the staff, not the players. What's up, Teach? - JJA42

The running game as a whole was pretty good, but the biggest rush for a running back was only 13 yards. Johnathan Franklin, who had 60 for the day, had none more than nine yards. There were some good holes, and enough space to work with. Hence the C-.

4) What's the deal with Carroll not playing? Does he not know the plays or does he have the droppies? Embree is a hands guy, but if he doesn't catch everything thrown at him, then why not play the speed guys? - Nick

Carroll had a pretty bad week of practice last week, and dropped a number of passes. Embree looked like his reliable self, and had a bad game. Some of the drops were behind him, too. I don't expect more of that. But I need to see more out of Carroll.

5) I didn't see a single good thing in that K-State game. Did you? - Blue Bruin

Well, there was this one cheerleader...Come on, man, have some perspective. Daniel Thomas is a beast of a running back who will do big things against almost every opponent. I saw some good from Josh Smith and Tony Dye, from Patrick Larimore and Johnathan Franklin. It was a bad loss, and they should've won, but perk up, little buddy.

Prince was horrible and looks like a scared 6-3 230 pnd QB. He had Rosario open by 10 yrds for a 40 yrd bomb and underthrew him by 7 yrds and he had to come back for the ball. After watching other games on Saturday, why cant he just hit a player in stride or on time like ALL other QBs. I dont want to here that, he's rusty from time off %$#%$. If thats the case he shouldnt have played. Even on roll outs he over runs his protection and is forced to dump a throw before going out of bounds. Time for Brehaut!!!!! or Bell....give us a chance.

Ley,

Did you watch the Boise St/VT game? Both of those QB's under threw their receivers quite a few times.Yea, they had some good throws also, but you need to realize these are all college QB's. Not seasoned NFL veterans. Even "the greatest college QB ever" (Jake Locker) didn't look so spectacular.

@ Ley:
One contributing factor on the Prince throw you are referring to was the moderate wind that pass was thrown into. Did you notice how every kickoff that went the opposite direction of that pass was out the back of the endzone?

Absolutely agree with you Jon on Mr. Smith Goes to Manhattan and 15 tackles by Mr. Dye (which begs the question: Should a Safety being making 15 tackles?)

Malcolm in the Middle was fine, but I'd love to see him explode to the outside --- and he showed signs!!!

Sorry, but I totally disagree. Prince totaly locks on to his primary receiver and doesn't even give his # 2 option a look. Watch the film and yyou'll see how many times he threw into triple coverage. Stop feeling sorry for this guy??? It's time for a change...he can't even throw a dang screen pass...both of them were overthrown...or was that into the wind Mr. Anonymous???

@Ley,

You'd better not post that evaluation of Prince to "Bruin Nation" or the guy who seems to manage the site (Nestor?) will verbally bite your head off for harshing the vibe of the site.

He laid into a few folks for observing that Prince wasn't on that day.

I have to agree with Ley. I know Prince was cleared to play, but I cant help but think that he was still injured and played because he was looking over his shoulder. Prince is too injury prone and he did not appear to have 4.6 speed. That being said, I will support any of the QBs that CRN marches out there, but I think Brehaut should get a solid look in game situations.

-Locker is certainly not "the best college QB ever" and certainly played poorly. He's said to have significant NFL potential based on his athleticism, but unfortunately he didn't have any decent coaching until last year. I can tell you more if you want, but I don't think you do.

-Prince has played for you for 1 year and 1 game, and missed, what...maybe the last 15 practices before the KSU game? Of course he is going to be out of synch. He needs practice time to get his timing down with your WRs, to get more accustomed to the college game, and to get more accustomed to this pistol thing. He's a better match for the offense than the other guys on the roster, and he's consistently shown RN/Chow he's farther ahead than those guys. He needs another year of game experience to really develop. You've really made your bed with him and now you need to lie in it. He needs to go through some more growing pains this year, and then he will deliver his last two years - and probably the last 2/3s of this season. Relax.

I never thought I'd agree with a UW fan! See what all you haters are doing? You're making me agree with a Fuskie! Calm down and give the poor kid a chance. Prince will develop into a decent QB. He gives us the best chance of winning NOW. Brehaut MAY be the better athlete in the long run, but let's not just give up on the season because we lost one game. Try to take a step back and be somewhat realistic!

Marvray was Prince's 3rd check on the td pass so I think its a little off base to say Prince never even checks to his secondary receiver when he threw for 6 to his 3rd.

I enjoy the posts by our UW fan. He's a lot more gracious than 99% of us are. He's quite objective and doesn't trash talk, like we 'highly educated' Bruins are wont to do. I agree that the demonstration by Bob Palcic and half of our beaten football was appalling sportsmanship. We all should be ashamed of them. Why hasn't Coach Rick made an open apology? It doesn't speak well of our players, our coaches, our FB program, or our school.

I saw that Marvray pass very differently. Watched the replay twice and IMO he stared down Marvray the entire time, or at least in that direction. Not saying "you're wrong" - I just didn't see him looking at a 2nd, let alone a 3rd option

That's one of my main beefs w/Prince - he doesn't move off his primary receiver.

GmanC said:

MGS,

My point is that Marvray was Prince's 3rd option on the play, not his primary receiver. Now perhaps he screwed up and just got lucky by locking onto his primary receiver from the get go (I can't double check because I already deleted the game) but Marvray was definitely the 3rd option on the play, not the 1st or the 2nd.
