UCLA v. Oregon Rfporf Cfrd
UCLA REPORT CARD
RESULT: Oregon 60, UCLA 13
RECORD: 3-4
WEEK 7 GPA: F
QUARTERBACK
Richard Brehaut may throw a pretty pass, but he needs to know where to throw them, and when.
F
RUNNING BACKS
Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman broke off a few nice runs, but the overall consistency wasn't there.
F
WIDE RECEIVERS
Someone give the UCLA wideouts a blankie because it sure looks like they have separation anxiety.
F
OFFENSIVE LINE
A few weeks ago, plenty were crowning Bob Palcic assistant coach of the year. Now? Umm. No.
F
DEFENSIVE LINE
Hard to blame the unit for lack of pressure when conservative game plan meant no blitzing, but interior is marshmallowy soft.
F
LINEBACKERS
With heart Patrick Larimore out after two series, soul Akeem Ayers was completely neutralized.
F
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Starting two backup cornerbacks - one a former walk-on - is not exactly what you'd want to see against the best offense in the country.
F
SPECIAL TEAMS
Kai Forbath once again reliable, but you'd think he'd rather not have so much work if it meant a closer game.
B
COACHING
Note to defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blitz_(American_football).
F-

hard to argue with that.
Jon,
Way too generous in your grades. An "F" across the board was warranted.
UB
I think you are being too generous with your grades. What has happened to our defense. Is it still in Texas? Someone call out a search and rescue team. Right from the start, they looked lost, hesitant (walking on eggshells) and unprepared- after having 10 days to prepare. Bruins suck it up and just go with it. Don't worry about anything, follow the say of playing with your hair on fire and whatever happens, happens. Don't worry about anything other than making a play, hitting someone, and not giving up.
love the wikilink Jon... I hope Bullough finds it helpful
The worst part of last night was seeing the look on Kareem's face when they panned over to his box seat. Sorry Lew, this ain't pretty to watch!
Excellent use of Wikipedia.
You grade as though you expected Ucla to give the nation's No. 1 team a game, despite Brehaut being pressed into action. Sure the defense looked bad; so did Stanford's against Oregon. Know what? Lots of teams will. Oregon is that good. Ucla isn't as bad as Jon Gold's "grades."
Completely agree about the defense, and there may be no choice but to fire Bullough. Coach Neuheisel needs to realize that the bend but don't break defenses of the past 4 years are gone, and conservative play-calling to win with special teams and defense is no longer possible.
However, absolutely disagree about the quarterback, running backs, and receivers. For the 1st time all season, I did not see receivers DROPPING BALLS, I saw the quarterback completing multiple passes in sustained series (though only a few down the middle of the field late in the game). The running backs gain chunks of yards despite a line that got pushed into the backfield on running plays. The problem is the patched together offensive line (snapping the ball way too hard and too high, inconsistent blocking) and the resultant conservative play-calling from Norm Chow.
On the plus side, I saw the first screen pass we threw this year in the second half that went for big gains!
Hmm... Isn't that what you're suppose to do when you know opposing defense is blitzing?
It was horrible, but did anyone expect anything less. Our Bruins were playing the number one team in the country (who is on fire right now) at one of the most difficult stadiums in college football, and starting a quarterback that has started only one game against the worst team in the Pac-10? Why does everyone seem so surprised? I hope Oregon runs the table and we can have a Pac-10, non-USC team in the BSC Championship game. Hat's off the Ducks and Kelly. Great program. Next year we have an absurd schedule, and I honestly don't see how we can possibly break 7 games this year or next. Of we want a powerhouse team, then CRN needs to find a way to make this team play.
I thought RB did OK completing 70 per cent of his passes although he fumbled a couple of times near the Oregon endzone. I'd give him a C.
Jon, I usually agree with you but your grades on Richard and RB are harsh! Richard all things considered looked great and I think he is the answer at QB (give him time) the RB did good it is the D that sucked and NORM is soooooo predictable I was calling the plays from my couch SMH!Norm is NOT the answer! If we are already getting murdered and we know we aren't gonna win open up the play book think out the box.Richard can throw let him so what if he threw a pick?
How's DeWayne Walker doing at New Mexico State...think he'd be interested in the D-Coordinator position again?
Sorry to pile on, but the defense was horrible. Yes, #1 team, away game, etc. but that was unacceptable. Doesn't matter who we have on offense, we aren't going to win any games if the D can't get stops.
Now, about that offense...some good, some bad. Hopefully after getting full reps during the week Brehaut will start making a few more plays, better decisions, etc. and the timing in his head will get better so he won't be a human pinata quite so often. I was actually pleased at the mobility he showed at times when he took off with the ball. That's a big key to the Pistol and I think he was adequate. The silver lining (I know I'm stretching it to say there was one) is that we will have several games with both Brehaut and Prince in live situations so coming into next year we'll have a much better idea of what each can do - sorry, not buying that a true freshman (Hundley) is going to come in and play right away.
I am no longer a Bruin alum.
Is it possible to give the Defense a "G"?
First off, thank you Jon for your hard work. You are the most interesting part of UCLA football.
I'll be brief.I have followed UCLA football since I was a freshman in 1975. We should have kept Toledo. We will not win under The current AD and the current coach. we dont get the good players. why? because players talk to each other. The word is out on Nueheisal, just as the word was out on Dorrell. The players dont like or respect neuheisal. The players didnt like or respect Dorrell. The word gets out.
we got beat last nite by two ex-UCLA coaches who have the same responsibilties as they had at UCLA.
My Washington friends told me that It wouldnt be long before Rick showed that he couldnt inspire.I wouldnt be surpised if Hundley de-commits. Why would he want to come here. I'm also saying this now. Hundley is not that good.No disrespect, butThere is a big differance between high school big numbers and college success. And if he is that good we will find a way to mess him up
The last great UCLA back was Deshaun Foster and we tried to ruin him. We had a back run for 300 yards one week(Maurice Jones Drew) and Dorrell sat him down the next week. Its the culture man, and we just dont have the right culture. When was the last time you saw former UCLA players who went pro around the UCLA program. The coches are intimidated by that..by having Norton or Aikman around..I could go on...but again thank you Jon Gold for all that you do. too bad we dont have a better product on the field that fits your talents...
We wouldnt give Dewayne Walker a chance though...bruins 80

Would it be out of line to use the f word about now?
I hate to blame the coaches, even if they do a bum job.
The real issue is the record of the AD. DG's football record since he was hired does not provide any success to the program. I do not mean to try and see how many wins or loses. The reality is where we finished in our conference. What DG did to the program by employing an incompetent coach for some 6 years has now extended the UCLA image to it's lowest level since the last days of the Billy Barnes era.
If it takes a new set of coaches to bring this program back to promenence, it will have to be preceeded by the hiring of a new AD first.
