"This is Pathetic"
EUGENE -
Step by step, Ricky Marvray spelled it all out.
"At this point, I'm clueless on everything," the UCLA redshirt freshman wide receiver said walking off the Autzen Stadium field.
"It's hard to say what our problem is. It's hard to say what we have to work on," said Marvray, shooing away the Oregon faithful who descended on the turf for a raucous post-game party.
"But something's got to change. This is pathetic."
And it was.
UCLA suffered its worst loss since 2005 and its worst loss ever to the Ducks on Thursday night in front of 59,372 and a national television audience, a 60-13 demolition to a No. 1 Oregon team that simply bullied the Bruins all night.
Perhaps bully is the wrong word.
More like danced around, because the Ducks were not more physical. They were simply faster...and trickier...and more exciting.
If UCLA runs the Pistol offense, then there just has to be a better name for Oregon's prolific attack.
The Howlitzer?
The AK-47?
How about the Atomic Bomb?
Whatever the name, Oregon exploded on the UCLA defense for 32 points and 367 yards in the first half, finishing with eight touchdowns and 582 yards, as the Bruins dropped to 1-3 in Pac-10 play.
Aside from a 42-28 win over Washington State, UCLA has been outscored 130-20 in conference play.
"Tonight we definitely had no answers for their attack," said sophomore middle linebacker Patrick Larimore, who suffered a dislocated left shoulder during the second series. "I feel like we were just getting out of our gaps. We came in knowing they'd have a couple big plays - their offense makes plays - but we're not going to let it combust. It just rolled downhill, play after play became big.
"It's like an avalanche coming straight downhill."
Except Oregon did not steamroll the Bruins, they sidestepped them.
Running back LaMichael James, the nation's leading rusher, had 123 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and third-string back Remene Alston - playing in place of the injured Kenjon Barner - had 75 yards and three touchdowns. Even quarterback Darron Thomas got in on the 270-yard ground attack, picking up 48 yards.
But he was better with his arm.
Thomas had a career-high 308 passing yards and three touchdowns in three quarters of work before Oregon called off the dogs and gave the ball to Nate Costa.
No matter.
With Costa at quarterback and Alston at running back, Oregon drove 65 yards in four plays, capped off by an Alston two-yard touchdown.
It didn't matter who's behind the trigger, Oregon was going to keep firing.
"Whatever it is, we have to do it," UCLA defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough said. "It's not the players. It's not their fault. We have to figure out what the issue is. That's our job."
For at least the foreseeable future, it looks like the Bruins quarterback job goes to Richard Brehaut.
The sophomore backup completed 16-of-23 passes for 159 yards and an interception, with a one-yard rushing touchdown, in place of the injured Kevin Prince. Prince said after the game that he suffered a torn meniscus and would have arthroscopic surgery on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury.
"I just have to step up," Brehaut said. "I've got to be the one to lead this team when things aren't going right. That's how it is right now. Things aren't going are way, and it's upon me to figure out what I can do to help this team out and be that leader I need to be."
He'll need plenty of help.
After reeling off three straight wins, including back-to-back wins over top-25 teams in Houston and Texas, UCLA has lost two straight in horrendous fashion. The Bruins were walloped by Cal, 35-7, in Week 6 before the Oregon implosion.
"It's clear - 60 to whatever - it's clear," senior defensive tackle David Carter said. "We have to go back and figure out what's really going wrong. It's not just the offense, it's not just the defense. It's the team as a whole. We have to figure out what's going wrong and fix it.

Bummer - but who didn't see this coming.
Oregon is darn good - props to them.
Hang in there Bruins lots more games against less talented teams.
What's wrong is that Rick had 2 WEEKS to prepare for this beating, and it was worse than expected. UCLA couldn't stop anything.. Bruins had no idea what was going on.
This one's on the coaches.... 2 WEEKS to prepare. They could have had two months and the score would still be the same.
inexcusable
Jon Gold, please permanently block "john @11:43pm" from ever posting on here again. Chuck Bullough is not a fan favorite, but that comment goes above and beyond in terms of being offensive and inappropriate. (And in case people really care, i'm personally straight. It's just pathetic the level people like 'john' stoop to when writing online.)
The scheming and play-calling have left much to be desired this season. What good is it to recruit good talent, if you don't properly leverage it?
Wait, we had new jerseys and all. I thought this was gonna help us win by making us lighter, faster, and harder to tackle.
Oregon has done this to every team it has played this year, averaging about 55 points per game. They got behind Tennessee and Stanford and then just pulverized them in the second half. So measuring yourself to Oregon is just not fair; the Ducks have opened up a whole new way to play this ancient game of football.
LAWYER JOHN
At one point Derrick Coleman came in and ran the ball a bunch of times in a row for like 60 yards and then UCLA took him out and I don't recall ever seeing him in the game again. Does anyone know why? Seems like it might have been a good idea to keep going to Coleman.
Bottom line: Bruins and their fans are losers. Always will be.
Anyone on this board thinks anything is going to change the next two years? If not, that means that it will be Neuheisel's 5th year. Dan Guerrero needs to stop eating at the buffet line at luncheon and make a serious change in coaching, $, and commitment to the football program. Or the Rose bowl will at 40k max every saturday.
BruinsAngelsLakers come on down, you called it closest (63-13 oregon).
Didn't we just extend Chow's contract? Frustrated that we have been last or near last in either passing or rushing every year he's been here.
Has anyone else noticed that on the very RARE occasions that Chow calls a PASS play on first down that we ALWAYS RUN on second down after an incompletion?
TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, RICK. YOU ARE THE CEO OF UCLA FOOTBALL AND NEED TO GET THE JOB DONE. I SAY "CEO" BECAUSE YOU MAKE A 7-FIGURE INCOME TO RUN THIS TEAM. LIKE ANY BUSINESS, IF THE CEO FAILS TO PERFORM, HE GETS THE AXE.
I LOVE THE PASSION YOU BRING TO THE TABLE, RICK, BUT YOU ARE NOT GETTING IT DONE ON THE FIELD OF PLAY.
AS I HAVE SAID REPEATEDLY LATELY, AT THIS POINT IN RICK'S TENURE, WE NEED TO C-O-M-P-E-T-E IN EVERY GAME. C-O-M-P-E-T-E. NOTICE I DID NOT SAY "WIN." JUST C-O-M-P-E-T-E.
AS AN 'INVESTOR' IN UCLA FOOTBALL, AND AN ALUMNUS, I EXPECT THAT UCLA WILL FIELD A COMPETITIVE TEAM YEAR-IN AND YEAR-OUT. THAT IS THE MINIMAL EXPECTATION.
TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
RICK, IN MY MIND, YOU HAVE THIS YEAR AND NEXT TO RIGHT THE SHIP. THAT'S IT FOR ME. GET IT DONE BUD! I WANT YOU TO SUCCEED. AGAIN, I LIKE YOUR PASSION AND DESIRE TO WIN. BUT, YOU STILL NEED TO GET IT DONE.
John,
Don't bother with the report card this week. "F's" all across the board.
Did anyone else notice:
1. That our D gave up before they ever took the field? After Bre-No was intercepted on UCLA's first drive, they came out with that 'deer-in-the-headlights' look.
2. That Rahim Moore played a pathetic game. He was a step slower that the slower receivers. He gave up on so many plays, it is unfathomable. Don't beleive me? Watch the replay and key in on Rahim Moore. But, it was not just Moore, the whole damn D stunk up Autzen.
3. The O-Line looked like the Keystone Cops. Missed assignments. Embarassing confusion on Aliotti's stunts. The left side O line looked especially pathetic. Getting juked left and right and running around like headless chickens trying to find someone to block.
4. Total lack of imagination in the play calling. Sorry Norm, but God as my witness, I knew what you were going to call on EVERY play. And sure enough, that is what you ran. And sure enough, everyone in Autzen knew it too -- especially Aliotti. He schooled you big time, Norm!
5. Rick and Norm stayed with their 'plan' even in the face of a monsterous deficit. Why not pull out all the stops? Why not go for it on EVERY 4th down? It would not have mattered. Oregon could score at will from anywhere on the field, so what would ahve been the harm. At least, you would give you offense on extra chance on every possession to keep a drive alive.
PATHETIC UNACCEPTABLE
I am not here to write trash b/c that is not my intention but as a USC fan I was shocked at how Oregon destroyed UCLA b/c I was expecting a close first half and then Oregon to pile up the points in the 2nd half.
I concur with a lot of UCLA fans that the coaching staff did a horrific job of preparing the team and this is the third loss of the season where UCLA lost by 30 or more points.
I wrote prior to the season that the lost of Price was major and last night's game was a perfect example b/c there was no pressure on the Oregon QBs.
First off, good call by everyone who "predicted" the Bruins to get hammered.
Second, I put this BLOWOUT on the coaches and the play calling. Norm Chow may have been a guru back in the day, but his play calling last night (and the entire season for that matter)was awful!
Everyone who has played Oregon in the past has said that their secondary was the weak link in the defense, so what does Chow do (or not do)...he does not take a single shot deep. Instead he calls for 3 yard screens and 5 yard slants and runs up the middle. I know the INT was on a "deep ball" but that was a third read by Breahaut and was not the actual play called.
And when the Bruins are actually moving the ball and get to about mid field..he calls for 3 straight runs by Franklin into the heart of the defense and they gain about 2 yards.
Like the poster above said, Coleman came in and ran over people for a series and they pulled him out for the next 3-4 series in a row. WTF?!!
And Bullough, what a joke. The only time the Bruins had any luck stopping Oregon was when they blitzed, so what does Bullough do, he goes back to, and stays in, a 4 man front and drops 7 so Oregon just runs and runs and runs all night. The Bruins were already getting beaten badly so why not try something different?
Was it Einstein who said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".
Look, I know this was a game the Bruins were expected to lose anyway, but 60-13 (if you want to count the gimme TD) is PATHETIC!!!!
This entire coaching staff is wasting the talent the Bruins have and it won't get any better any time soon.
I know I said I would never bet against the Bruins, but I can't see them winning another game this season if the coaches do not step up.
I read something about a player over at $c being berated in a team meeting and he said "maybe I would be a better player if you were a better coach". I think that statement carries over to this Bruins team.
I kind of felt sorry for the Oregon offense. You hear about a defense being out on the field too long, how about those poor Duck running backs and receivers, exhausted.
As I stated before, Rick's job depends on this kid Hundley from Arizona. Let him come in and be the starter right off the bat. Maybe he has the charisma to lead the team, much as Cade or Tommy. A dynamic QB can inspire the whole team, mediocre defense and all. Rick has nothing to lose as his job is so tenuous now, he might as well pull out all stops. The Prince and Brehaut show is a fast track to being the QB coach in Buffalo.
on the up side, we don't have to worry about the Prince/Brehaut discussions anymore this year. And Thigpin played. That's about all I can come up with.
And so it begins . . .
October 22, 2010, the official start of . . .
. . . .
. . . .
"Rick, you have one more year and then you are OUT!"
OK, Bruin fans! Repeat it OFTEN. Let's send a "message" to Rick and Norm and Dan that . .
"WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE !!!!!!!!!!"
Start the Chant NOW:
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"JUST ONE MORE YEAR!"
"Ricky Marvray spelled it all out...This is pathetic."
Mavray's comment confirms something I suspected after the Cal loss: Rick is losing the team.
The problem with filling your team with overly inflated high expectations is the inevitable crash that occurs when reality sets in. I feel sorry for those kids. They believed in him. Rick, Chuck, Norm and the other coaches have let them down big time. Rick needs to make major changes to the coaching staff, and if he doesn't, Guerrero needs to change him.
Bruin fans are funny. You were playing the #1 team in the nation who has been destroying everybody. You can give me two weeks to prepare for a one on one with Kobe and the outcome would be the same. Oregon is fantastic - give them credit. We are a work in progress - no sense piling on them. Way to be loyal fans. You probably deserve what you got by the evidence of your inane reactions. Do you ridicule your kid or slap him/her around if they take a little longer to make it from crawl to walk. No. You encourage. That seems to be a lost thought here.
The most shocking thing to me was the total chaos that ensued in between plays on defense. I know Oregon runs an "uptempo" offense but we had over ten days to prepare for that...and still looked totally unprepared.
Then, the lack of in-game adjustments. I think Oregon scored every single time they had the ball, until the late 3rd quarter, while our vanilla D looked basically exactly the same throughout. No pressure on the QB and Thomas was just picking us apart stepping fully into his throws with no fear. I think someone needs to remind CB that Brian Price is playing on Sundays now. Can we dial up a couple blitzes before its 29-3?
Honestly, I didn't think the offense played that poorly (not that they played that well either). They moved the ball, and, unlike previous years, you can't say that the D was tired because of constant 3 and outs.
***THEY FINALLY THREW THE BALL TO FAURIA!!!!***
now try that about 10 more times per game and preferably when you're in the red zone and you'll be putting some more points on the board.
Big problem with your statement there Hot Bruin, Rick NEVER had this team to begin with. I have NEVER seen any member of this team display confidence in the coaching staff. Not one. I do not believe that any of theses players even really know their position coaches, and what is expected out of them. This team lacks the understanding of the game of football at it's core, and I believe it is due to the coaches not being mentors and teachers, but rather expecting the kids to just get it on their own. From the roots to the leaves, this tree is dead.
@ Anon 9:52 Dude, if my kid isn't walking after 10 YEARS I'm taking him to the doctor. It's not that we lost, it's the way that we lost. No fight, no pride. And the chorus of we're rebuilding is getting repetitive.
@Anonymous (of course), "You can give me two weeks to prepare for a one on one with Kobe and the outcome would be the same"
That is a great argument when you are a nobody who is not in the NBA, but, if say Jordan Farmar had two weeks to prepare for Kobe one on one he would probably be able to make a respectable showing.
"Do you ridicule your kid or slap him/her around if they take a little longer to make it from crawl to walk. No. You encourage. That seems to be a lost thought here."
Well if the kid is 3 years old and is still crawling you would probably be a bit concerned.
No one above has put this off on the players, there is major concern about the coaching staff. If I sent my kid to school and he was there 3 years and he/she and his/her classmates still could not read I would say there is a problem with the teachers.
Nice analogies knucklehead.
Robear ... and what if your kid was injured ???
Nice mother/father you are.
Concern ... absolutely yes. But you still have to factor in the circumstances. Oregon is great and they have been beating up everybody. UCLA has a few issues but they are in significant areas. The best lineman/center out for the year and the qb nursing injuries.
I know nobody likes to lose but focus your attention on games you have a realistic change on winning. This wasn't one of them. Losing 50-23 wouldn't have been any better. Ignore it. Turn the page.
I'm blown away by Rick's postgame comment:
"We have a lot of work to do and we need to get started soon."
You haven't started yet? You're in your 3rd year with the dream team coaching staff!
On a bright note: Harkey caught passes thrown to him. Its a miracle. ;) hahahaha...
So we got beat big by the #1 team in the nation. It is because they are an amazing team. Ucla has a lot to work on but please don't give up on them just yet. Brehaut is better than Prince. Give him all the reps in practice and then let us see what we can do. As for our defense... well, Bullough has got some explaining to do. His conservative play calling and unwillingness to adjust needs to be examined by CRN.
Stop making excuses (young, injured, inexperienced, azz warts, l!mp noodzzz, etc., etc.) We need to be COMPETITIVE week in and week out. CEO Rick -- Git 'er done!
Hey, let's be fair...
...to BYU. That was the worst loss we've had since 2005.
List we should fire....
1-Dan G
2- Bullshit
List we should hire.......
1- anyone but Dan
2- Dewayne Walker (Letting him go was a huge mistake)
I read a comment on another board suggesting UCLA should hire Bud Foster, the DC at Va Tech, as the next head coach. I'd LOVE to see someone as hard-nosed as Bud at UCLA. Shame it'll never happen.
Simply put, there are too many talented coaches out there who would love to have Neu's job to keep accepting the excuses every year! The coaching staff has no clue and has now been reduced to copying NEVADA's gimmick offense to try to compete in the PAC 10...Rick, That's the best you can do? Good coaches have their system and know how to install, coach and recruit THEIR system. I could understand tweaking your system to fit a special talent ala Jim Tressel with Terrell Pryor, but you changed your entire system to fit a running QB when you didn't have one on the roster and your best QB is a Pro-style QB? 3rd yr in that means your players are either JR's or RS SO's and should be ready to play. Brehaut should be in his 2nd season as a starter...Where would he be at this point if he had started last year..WE CAN SEE RICK! THE KID LOOKS 1000 PERCENT BETTER THAN KP! WHY YOU AND NRM CHW (NO O)CANT SEE IT IS BEYOND ME.
Now we are reserved to wait for the Hundley era to start...or will you then go back to a pro-style system after Brehaut transfers and then start Bell!
All you "let's be patient" fans...Are you serious!!! If we wan't to compete with the elite programs in the country we have to act like an elite program and losses like these and seasons like these are unacceptable! Sorry Ricky but you knew the deal when you took the gig...either get it done or move aside and let someone else walk the walk while you keep talking the talk!
As I mentioned in my earlier post, as a USC fan I am not here to throw dirt at UCLA fans.
I am curious to see if AD Guerrero gives Neuheisel another year to perform b/c his team has regressed especially on the offensive side of the ball. With the exception the Houston and UT game, this offense is very anemic especially passing the ball.
Before Coach Kiffin was hired at USC (note I am iffy on his hire) I was rooting for Coach Walker to be the HC. I am still surprised that Coach Walker's only offer was NMSU considering that he built UCLA to a very good defensive squad and from my understanding this is not a UCLA trademark. I would strongly look at Coach Walker as a candidate and I would also make a strong push for Utah coach Willingham.
I meant Utah Coach Whittingham.
Either Utah's or TCU's coach would be a great get. But I'd go after Al Golden of Temple.
One could imagine if Golden was brought in when he was one of the candidates when CRN was hired. I thought it was a joke at the time with the mention of someone who coached at lowly Temple at the time, but it's not as big of a joke as it is now
Mark @ 10:41am--right on! I was thinking the exact same thing. WTF, you're gonna start NOW? I thought the work towards building a better team started, oh, maybe at a minimum 4mos ago! Incredible & sad.
Didn't UCLA lose to BYU 59-0 in Neuheisel's first year? Wouldn't that be the worst loss ever???
UCLA had 2 weeks to prepare for the game... um, did you also forget that Oregon had 2 weeks to prepare for UCLA too. UCLA was going to get shellacked. Just a matter of how much.
