What is the real story on who whose idea the pistol was? I thought I read in the off season that it was Chow and Palcic who went to Reno and suggested installing the formation to help the run game. Now guys like Petros are saying that the pistol was forced on Chow and it is not the offense he wants to run. Can an offense really be “forced” on Norm Chow considering he was negotiating a multi-year contract while the scheme was being installed?

Mr. Gold, the UCLA recruiting class will be a success if they sign what names (e.g. Hundley)? Thanks.

Well I’m finally out of seclusion after the USC game, and I think I may have had an epiphany as to what went wrong this year. During the senior salute prior to the USC game, as the seniors came out one at time I kept asking myself, “Who are these guys?” Really, the only notable senior was Forbath. Could it be that there was such a lack of senior leadership, because there were no seniors to speak of, that a vital ingredient was plain missing?

The most common complaint I hear from a friend very intimately involved with the football program (at every practice) is that, for the most part, we are a team of one dimensional players. Cassius can pass rush but gets pushed around on the run, same for Graham, Harkey can’t catch but is a bulldozer, Fauria has golden mitts but can’t block, etc etc etc. Is this solely due to youth or is this a failure developmentally on the part of the coaching staff and are they not mitigating the issue by substituting well situationally?

If Bullough is dismissed, who are the top candidates to replace him? Who do you think would be best?

Any updates on Akeem Ayers or Rahim Moore and their decisions whether to return or leave early for the NFL? What percentage do you put on each one leaving early?

When should we expect to know if there will be a change made with either the defensive or offensive coordinators?

What is the back story on Carlino’s sudden departure?

It seems like UCLA has a hard time retaining successful assistant coaches. Guys like Tom Cable, Eric Bienemy, Dewayne Walker, etc. all jump ship at the first offer. I have yet to hear of a highly-regarded UCLA assistant coach turning down an offer to go elsewhere. What do you make of UCLA’s inability to hang on to these types of guys long-term and how does it affect the program?

Has Darius Bell burned any bridges at UCLA after his brief playing time against Washington? Will he compete or is a transfer likely?

why do we allow the trojan band and the mascot dude to disrespect our home field like that every other year? They do it before the game and at halftime…can we ever say no, and tell them to leave the band and mascot fool at home?? who can i write to about this?

  • Coach Thom

At the end of Rick’s post-U$C conference, you pulled down the camera and walked away while Rick was still speaking. Does that signify something about your opinion of and relationship with our Head Coach?

Jon, I’m having a really rough time believing in UCLA football and basketball. Just looking at the players that are here, the players we’re getting and the coaches we have, it just doesn’t look like there’s much to look forward to for the next 5-10 years unless something drastic happens. I mean, Rick and Ben are good coaches, but are they championship coaches? Sure, Ben made 3 FF, but he came away with how many titles? I know that sounds ridiculous, but it just seems like he has hit his prime here and it’s only downhill. Then football just isn’t improving at all. We’re recruiting kids and not developing them, that’s on the coaches. Should I even pay attention to UCLA sports?

UCLA is losing commits. How many scholarships do they have to offer and are they any blue chip prospects likely to commit now.

How often do confused people ask you for restaurant recommendations? More or less then they tell you how much they liked that movie you did with Michael Cera?

Gee Jon, a little light on the Q & A’s last couple of weeks don’t you think? Only 3 sets of 5 questions? What gives?

Hi Jon, do the players like the football coaches, specifically Neu/Chow/Bullough? Do you think they respect them? If you were UCLA’s AD, how would you move forward from this season? Thanks very much.

    @ 909Bruin

You know that our band travels to the USC games at the Colosseum as well, right?

4 or 5 years ago, during a field show at the Colosseum, the Juggler guy was juggling 3 swords, then stabbed them all into the usc field. Crowd went nuts. It was awesome.

Is UCLA looking to recruit a PG for the 2011 recruiting class to join Norman Powell?

  • Spencer

(In connection with my previous question.) ESPN is reporting UCLA interest in Cezar Guerrero. Do you have any additional information on UCLA’s interest?

Did UCLA offer a scholarship to DeAndre Daniels?

How many recruits will we sign in February?Do you see many current players leaving?

  • BruinBall

Where do you think the tandem of Jones/Anderson ranks compared to other PAC-10 point guards? What about nationally?

Other than inconsistency, that seems to be the real weakness of this team still.

I think that losing Kerry Keating and Ernie Zeigler were much bigger loses than people realize. Do you agree?

  • Reformed Droog

Miami just hired Al Golden as their new coach. He was in the mix for the UCLA job, but Neuheisel was hired. Given what’s happening right now with both teams, would you rather be Rick or Al? Whose future looks more – wait for it – “golden?”

Jon- I think ben howland is a legit coach, but is there something about his style that alienates players? I know transfers are frequent in all programs, but is the frequency of transfers reflective of a specific aspect of his coaching style? Is he aware of this and do you think he will modify his way.

Ryan Taylor was Pac 10 Offensive Player of the week against Texas. What made him “that” good in the game? What makes a good o-lineman and what makes it so darn hard to have a good o-line?

  • E

    Jon,

Your honest opinion please…Chow has done nothing for us in 3 years…granted we have had injuries and little o-line depth, Is he to blame for our vanilla and conservative system and play calling or is it neuheisel’s play a field position battle and use Forbath as much as possible system?

Can another OC come in here and be successful if Neuheisel doesn’t give him the freedom to do it all?

  • ET

We’re UCLA shouldn’t we expect more from our mens hoops team? we’re losing to nobody’s and our players look lost out there.

USC has as few scholarship players as us and they look a lot better than us. what’s Ben’s excuse for that?

For B-Ball Are we going to have to “Wait till next year, like in football?” I’m getting sick of the wait till next year excuse.

  • Steve Clarkson

With 2 QB guru coaches…why can’t we recruit or coach up any of our scholarship QB’s? A. Luck and K. Moore are studs, but i would have to say their coaches are coaching them up…would you agree?

Do we need to hire a full time QB coach? If yes, why haven’t we done so already?

If Bullough is let go, who are the leading candidates to replace him?

  • bruinstc

    Jon,
Thanks for all the hardwork and insight on UCLA. I am worried that Men’s Basketball attendance is dropping like a rock. How bad is it? What were the attendance figures in the last 3 games? What does the athletic department say about it?

Scott Wolf stated that he believes Neuheisel’s program does not have much structure and that he is not well liked by his players.

Would you agree with these statements to any extent?
