Final: UCLA 86, BYU 79

UCLA hands BYU its first loss. Josh Smith produces while playing with four fouls, as do Tyler Honeycutt and Zeke Jones. Malcolm Lee does a solid job on Jimmer Fredette, who still scored 25 points on 8 of 15 shooting. Lee had seven assists and one turnovers. BYU had five assists and 19 turnovers. Very good win for UCLA.

I think that Nelson dunk deserves it’s own post.

  • BruinBall

So Lee had 7 assists while Jones had zero. Who is our PG?

  • la_bruin

Not sure how one can call Lee’s defensive effort on a player like Fredette that avgs 23ppg, scores 25pts in the game, and is the top BYU scorer for the game -‘solid’.

On the other hand, I thought Joshua Smith’s 15pts & 8 rebounds were far more significant than the numbers indicate. He was the BIG DADDY in the key today and came out with authority grabbing offensive rebounds and really disrupting the inside. I think Joshua Smith is going to be the first truly significant talent at Center that the Bruins have had since Kareem. He’s just really special and Jerime, for all his past faults, seems to be doing a great job in mentoring him. For once the “You can’t teach height” adage might actually pan out, ‘eh?

    Walton wasn’t significant?

Nelson is such an up and down player. You get high on him at times, and get frustrated at hell at him at other times (ESPECIALLY ON DEFENSE, POOR ROTATION, EMOTIONAL OVERREACTIONS, etc)… hopefully he’ll mature over the season…

  • Larry

Kevin Love wasn’t too bad either.

  • Agree that Walton needs to be included, but am fine leaving K Love off the list. Great for his one year but I think that we’d all like to see a multi-year guy that can be built around like a Kareem, Walton, Zidek… OK- maybe not Zidek, but he was definitely serviceable and did at least contribute to our last ring.

This is pretty pathetic coverage. Where’s the full-game recap? Where was the in-game chat? Don’t tell me Gold was pulled away to cover something irrelevant like the football coaching changes. Seriously, this was a BIG game and everybody knew it was big going into the game.

Tell me, Daily News, am I unrealistic for wanting more coverage??

  • VB

Wow Jill, I’m not used to someone actually covering an entire basketball game, and even posting the final score! Thanks for your diligent coverage of the team!

Jon Gold didn’t even go to the basketball game…. again…. He sent Jill down ’cause he probably didn’t want to make the drive. He had to put down the bottle of beer though when Neuheisel fired Bullough. Sorry your day off was disrupted, Jon! Funny that you missed the Kansas game and now the BYU game which was probably our best win of the season. I guess that football season was too grueling eh?
