Brehaut to play UCLA baseball

| | Comments (19) |

UCLA sophomore quarterback Richard Brehaut will join the baseball team this spring as a catcher and DH. Brehaut tried out for the team last week but details of the practice arrangement had to be worked out. Props to Perfect Game's Kendall Rogers for being ahead of the game on this, as John Savage leaked the news a few weeks ago.

I'll have more on this tomorrow hopefully.

UPDATE: Just to clarify, yes, Brehaut is playing football still. The two head coaches have come to an agreement, and I'll try to find more details in the upcoming days.

I am all for dual sport athletes, but knowing what it takes to be a starting QB, I cannot justify the move.

but you said he wasn't going to play baseball

is he giving up football? or playing both?

So he's going to be spending even LESS time learning the playbook and perfecting his craft as a quarterback...greeeeeat...

Give the kid a break. Many, many college athletes have played more than one sport. Ever hear of Jackie Robinson, John Elway, Dan Marino, Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, John Lynch...to name just a few. It's his life and his college experience. Enjoy yourself, Richard! Be what you want to be.

WTH??? does this mean he's giving up on football? maybe Brehaut saw the writing on the wall with Hundley... but please don't leave backup duties to Prince! at least fight for the starting position this upcoming year. worry about Hundley next year.

if Brehaut has a hard time learning the playbook of just football, how can he handle 2 sports???

This kid is obviously not smart enough to play QB. No wonder he couldn't learn the playbook.

I guess this means Hundley is CRN's guy. Maybe Brehaut realizes it too and is hedging his bets.

I wouldn't mind if he had a solid grasp of the playbook and solidified his position at QB, but he hasnt.

DEDICATION LACKING! EITHER CHOOSE one or the other. Its not fair to the other guys on the team!

god... some of you guys are idiots. how dare brehaut enjoy his college years playing multiple sports.

Stan Author Profile Page said:

I agree with Brock. Let the kid play ball. He'll be fine. Apparently he can help the baseball team or he wouldnt be asked to play. Let's get a National Championship in baseball. No chance in football seen on the horizon.

So does this mean Brehaut will not be available for football spring practice? If so, this will be a golden opportunity for Hundley as he'll have more time with the 1's! If Brehaut gets passed up by Hundley, the can't blame anyone but himself for not being fully committed to football.

Competing for the number one team in the nation can only help him with football. That kind of competitive experience transfers over.

I have to admit, this makes me more excited about the upcoming baseball season!

And at Catcher, no less. The position in baseball that puts the MOST stress on your knees. As QB, healthy knees are VERY important for mobility. Just makes no sense at all . . . unless, CRN already knows that Hundley will EXIT spring as the #1QB on the deptch chart. Maybe, just maybe, CRN is listening to UB for a change -- play the future now because the now has no future!

UB,

It looks like you learned nothing from your tirade against Reeves Nelson when he chose to play high school football. Are their risks to Brehaut playing baseball? Sure, but the opportunity to compete on one of the best teams in the country means he will most likely emerge from this experience a better athlete.

UB (Ultimate Bruin) Author Profile Page said:

My 'tirade' as you put it was well reasoned. Just because Reeves recovered and it did not end his BB career does not mean that his decision was prudent. It could ahve gone the other way. Reeves was recruited as a BB player and should have been dedicated to that. He was not a FB prospect. As for Brehaut, same thing goes. If he blows out a knee, then his QB mobility will be gone. And, Mr. I.Q. has a history of not knowing the playbook and making bonehead decisions. Now with a new OC, and #1 on the deptch chart, Einstein would want to concentrate on FB. However, notwithsatnding his unwise decision, if it gets Hundley the #1 spot coming out of Spring, yipee! CRN needs to play the talent. As I have oft said, 'Play the future now, because the now has no future!'

If Brehaut was a 2nd or 3rd stringer, or played any other position...I wouldn't really care about this.

But, he's the STARTING QUARTERBACK. That job comes with a certain level of commitment that frankly, he's shirking. This is especially troubling considering he has a history of not knowing the playbook.

Gee, Sid, be careful. UCLABZ will accuse you of spewing an unwise tirade. However, I agree with your 'tirade' 100%.

I love the turd who compares Brehaut to Jackie Robinson, John Elway, Dan Marino, Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson and John Lynch. What about Jim Thorpe!!!??? Brehaut is just like Jim Thorpe! He is a proven Hall of Famer just like all those guys! Wow!
