Howland not happy with Post article

UCLA head coach Ben Howland took umbrage with a recent New York Post article that followed the Bruins' win over St. John's on Saturday.

After UCLA went to the free-throw line 41 times to St. John's' seven, Lenn Robbins of the Post took the officials to task, and Howland wasn't happy.

"I really didn't feel that was fair," Howland said. "I saw it actually. I was getting my car washed Sunday after church, go into this NY pizzeria and they had the NY Post laying out there. If you go back and watch the game, which I did Sunday, it was very agressive. They fouled. They were fouls. It was not any kind of homer situation."

While the difference in the number of free throws was very dramatic, the difference in the number of FOULS wasn't nearly so dramatic. UCLA was fouled going to the hoop, SJU was fouled passing the ball around.

The "journalist" from the Post was a hack trying to get clicks on his blog.

I agree with Ben. I hate when people make hay out of statistics without looking at the numbers in context.

here's the Post piece...the comments are way more informative than the actual article...does the "journalist" even know anything about sports? did he even watch the game?

I always hated the NY "toughness" my NY friends try to promote, especially when it comes to Bball. Needless to say I was laughing at them all game Saturday as that NY toughness was on display by getting beat on the inside and hacking away. It was great to shut them up, at least for a day.

What is this guy crying about... had the Bruins gone to the line just 7 times as well, they would have most likely won by a larger margin because they would have been able to put up more shots from the field. Has this guy seen our team free throw percentage??

Opponents should WANT the Bruins headed to the charity line... because most Bruins obviously dont like accepting charity (Laz being the exception and Honeycutt is improving his consistency).
