Tuiasosopo coming to UCLA

| | Comments (11) |

The venerable Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times is reporting that former Washington quarterback and assistant strength coach Marques Tuiasosopo is headed to UCLA for an unspecified position: Check it out

Tuiasosopo played for head coach Rick Neuheisel while with the Huskies before an eight-year NFL career. Depending on his role, he should at least have a moderate impact on Brett Hundley, so this is good news for the Bruins.

hmm, wonder where he will fit in. without trying to sound ignorant, with a last name like "Tuiasosopo" it sounds like he may have some island descent? That would be awesome if he could help in recruiting there.

Marques Tuiasosopo is the son of former NFL (and UCLA) defensive lineman Manu Tuiasosopo. See this Wikipedia link ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marques_Tuiasosopo. And, yes, he is of Samoan descent.

He's supposedly coming in as an assistant strength coach. Does NCAA rules allow him to do any on field "football" coaching or is he restricted to strength and conditioning coaching only?

I don't get this hire at all. Tui wasn't a great QB himself, and Neu said he would coach the QB's, so don't see why or if Tui would coach the QB's. Need some more clarity from Neu. I don't see why he would leave UDub for the same position here. Seems like Neu might be trying to work him in at QB coach.

We have room for one more coach, so, he should be able to coach on the field, if designated as such. We don't have a QB or WR coach, but we hired Mastro as an Fback, RB, and Pistol coach, so that leaves us one coaching spot open.

We still have the same special teams coach right? He probably should have been replaced too.

The Tuiasosopo family has a LONG standing history in College and the NFL. He has an uncle and 3 cousins who played in the NFL. His brother Matt was the top rated QB in the west coming out of HS in 2004. He signed with UDub, but ended up signing with the Mariner's and going Pro. He is now on the Mariner's roster and played SS, 1B, and Outfiled last year.

BruinFaithful, I remember Tui being a great running quarterback at UW. He threw for over 300 and ran for over 200 yards against Stanford. He led the Huskies to a Rose Bowl victory and was named MVP of that game. He was 8th in the Heisman voting and was picked by the Raider in the second round. He spent eight years in the NFL. To me, he seems like a great addition! Welcome to UCLA Tui!

Not a bad move but you may start to get too many cooks.

Playing for the Raiders will kill anyone's career.

Your memory seems selective. Yes, he had a great Stanford game and Rose Bowl. But his career was VERY average and never lived up to the hype.

He was an average runner and a below average passer.

His senior year he only ran for 394 yds., a measly 3.1 YPG average. He also only completed 52.6% of his passes for 14 TD and 11 INT. His QB rating was only 115.9. I guess watching Prince, Brehaut, and Craft the last few years might make you think those are great numbers. But, come on.
