Weekly Answers, Pt. 5

Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...

1) How would you describe the offense that Mike Johnson runs? From what little I can gather, it appears to be a pro-style concept with a bit of west coast...and perhaps now a sprinkling of the Pistol. - Sandiegobruinfan
It's more of a spread, and I expect the Pistol "ideals" - emphasis on the running game, probably zone blocking, perhaps a few instances of the formation - to be used.

2) I have a probation question... How the heck is USC pulling 26 recruits when they are on probation? It doesnt seem the sanctions effect anything other than bowl games. - Anonymous
The sanctions are postponed until the appeal process is complete. That being said, I still don't really get how the class could be that big given the potential 75-player limit.

3) How can Brehaut being given permission by Neuheisel to play baseball NOT mean that Hundley will be the presumed starting QB? Neuheisel's primary criticism of Brehaut, in the past, has been that he needs to learn the playbook better. One would think that Brehaut would be doing nothing but learning the playbook, watching film and particpating in 7-on-7 drills. Now he's playing baseball? - Jungleland
I don't think you can presume anything. First off, no one has seen Hundley play one minute of college football. He hasn't yet. I have no idea how he'll look. I think he'll be good, because he has all the tools and yadda, yadda, yadda, but we have to SEE it first. Second of all, Brehaut will be participating fully in spring ball and in throwing sessions, and the way I understand it, he will play baseball when it does not affect football. Third, there's also Kevin Prince, who will be given a shot, as well. It's all up in the air.

4) Hey Friday night light questions me and my gf watched season 1-4 in a month love the show. Now were watching S5... - anonymous
Sorry to cut you off, but in the future, try not to give any spoilers away. The show hasn't run on NBC yet. But there are only two episodes left, and I'm freaking out.

5) How has the process been in developing sources in obtaining inside information about UCLA football and basketball? I know it takes time to develop relationships and was just wondering how long it takes to develop the trust. - Jbruin
That's been the most difficult part of the job for me, and I feel like I'm getting there. I have a few people I feel like I can really trust, but it's taken time, and it will continue to take time. It really hit me a few weeks in that it would be the most difficult part of the job, because with my previous stops, mostly covering high school and "niche" sports, people come to YOU. At this level, it's all about spending time with them and developing that relationship, like you said.

It is being reported that Drew (point guard North Carolina) has walked away from the program. Have you heard any rumblings around Westwood about this and the chance he may choose UCLA to continue his college career?

I would hope that CBH is calling Larry Drew right away. He's from Southern California, so there's an "in." Interestingly, Larry Drew and Jrue Holiday were rivals in high school (I believe Drew beat Holiday for the city title in their senior years). CBH could easily play up the fact that Jrue got drafted near the lottery coming off a bad year for UCLA. However, I wonder if Larry resents that fact and would not want to be seen following the foot steps of an old rival...

Drew only has one year of eligibility left...would be a bit of a waste if he didn't pan out for the one season he played.

Drew would sit out a year - transter rule - and then have one year of elegibility. As undesireable as that sounds (only one year to compete) it probably would be a blessing considering how difficult it has been for Howland to sign a point guard the last two or three years. Jones graduates next year, and then Drew comes in the year after and starts. Perfect. And hopefully another point guard (HS recruit???) is waiting as Drews backup. Ideal, I know, but maybe....

U$C talked a bunch of their recruits into coming to school early (I think 9 is the correct number) and could therefore apply them to last years class. They are recruiting though as if they will be able to get their sanctions reduced. If they don't, I read an article somewhere that stated they could be down to just 10-12 available openings for the next couple seasons. So, they are basically...

A. Gambling on sanction reductions or
B. Robbing Peter now to pay Paul later or
C. Both of the above

Jon,
The Times reports the Bruins are going to hire a running backs coach from Nevada who is also a recruiter.Nevada was 120th in recruiting and we have a good running backs coach. Why bring in a new guy?

clyde,

Heed your own advise or at least quote your sources. Time to senor you. You have not idea what you're talking about. We need more support, not criticism. Do some research before you type. Nevada ranks #100 in recruiting on scout.com and #7 in WAC per rivals.com

Jon,
Scouts.com is saying that there was something going on relative to Rocky Seto today. Can you shed some light or is it a case of tracking down accuracy before you can do so? It could be he is coming to UCLA or removing himself from consideration, I don't know.
Thanks!

It may not be scouts.com, but it was Tracy Pierce who wrote it.

I don't blame Jon for not reporting anything. If there's nothing to report and he does, a group jumps his stuff for writing about nothing because nothing is happening. If he doesn't write something, then he is accused of abandoning one of his assignments. He's darned if he does and is darned if he doesn't. If any of us feel he or the Daily News is being scooped all of the time, then enjoy yourself on the other website. We need to be thankful for having someone feed us info of any sort for UCLA. Let's not bash others because WE are unhappy about ourselves. Your unhappiness is not Jon's fault. I don't know the guy, but geez...
