Weekly Q&A

Fire away with questions for this week’s Q&A. Please don’t post new questions on the answers section, because I don’t always check the comments. Save them for next week.

Also, I’m taking the rest of the day off, coming back with a season-in-review-slash-look-forward tomorrow after our press conference with Ben Howland, then likely taking the rest of the week off until Spring Football begins on the 29th.

Any chance Brendan Lane would redshirt next year if Reeves comes back? Seems like it would make the most sense for his career and the Bruins future rather than have him, Stover and the Wear twins fight for minutes in the front court.

Where do you project Honeycutt in next years draft if he goes? Also, I read a lot that Honeycutt might not be the only person to leave the program. Do you hear the same? Can we assume it would have to be someone playing PF?

  • Legalsean

Do you think Coach Howland has “reclaimed” the culture of the team? It seemed the team was much more interested in playing both ends of the floor this year, than last year’s team.

    Hi Jon,

Do you think Coach Howland has peaked in terms of how far he is is able take the UCLA BB program? I’m sure he worked his butt off this season, but when guys like Honeycutt have a ton a potential and underachieved, greatly, and when he so desperately needs to sign a point guard and can’t, and when he has major problems beating and getting ahead of the elite programs with the kind of talent that a Florida has, well, does Howland have the coaching capabilites to lead the program to that next level? And if so, how? (This is NOT a fire Coach Howland driven question. I like him alot and want him to succeed at UCLA.)

Do you think the negativity that BruinsNation has displayed on the blog is necessary?

Do you think Ben Howland would consider leaving UCLA for another coaching position and a pay raise? When does his contract expire?

  • Jeff

Any idea why Coach Howland never calls out of bounds plays? Every time UCLA takes the out they throw it into the backcourt. I have yet to see any type of play being run other then having someone run back and catch a long pass in the backcourt.

Can you try to do an interview with Norman Powell at some point during the summer?

Assuming Honeycutt AND Lee leave. What does our 2 deep look like? Can Reeves guard SF’s?

What percentage of the men’s basketball team do you think has the hots for Nikki Caldwell?

Is there more than leaving for personal reasons when Lake and Gansz leave the program? I see that Lake has returned to coaching.I really appreciate your work.I think Howland is quietly praying when his players go to the free throw line;unfortunately his prayers haven’t been answered.

Mr. Gold, I asked Scott Wolf this question and I am curious about your response, back in the day UNLV, Oregon State, Depaul and Houston were power house b-ball programs, do you foresee these programs regaining their glory days? USC was mediocre in football until Carroll took over and UCLA hit a homerun with both Harrick (NC) and Howland (multiple final fours), and I am not sure if a coaching change will enhance these former b-ball programs. Thanks.

Jon: It seems as if for all that Honeycutt still lacks, he is miles ahead of what both Ariza & Jrue were when they left UCLA for the NBA … Heck, I’d say the same for even Reeves at this point compared to those two. Agree?

Does Lee’s injury and need for knee surgery impact his choice as to whether to declare for the draft?

Over the last few years there have been reports that Coach Howland holds back players due to his style of play. Have you ever found out who specifically was responsible for spreading these accusations? What do you think the reason for it is?

I’m concerned about our baseball team’s hitting so far this year. Any word on why the power outage let alone inability to hit for a decent average? What does Coach Savage have to say?

Why does Josh Smith think blind people are so good at scouting basketball? I’d never heard that before, but I figure since you felt the quote where he says that it doesn’t take a blind person to see how good MSU is was worth running, there’s obviously some theory here.

    Tough room.

Some would argue the lack of a consistent outside shooting threat and elite man-to-man defensive ability at the three have been a weakness for Coach Howland’s teams since 2006. I have to believe Coach Howland is aggressively recruiting Jordan Adams and Shabazz Muhammad. While of the schools recruiting Muhammad and Adams, four are in the sweet sixteen, yet none arguably may have the potential of next year’s UCLA team. With an open three position, its seems absurd to circumvent UCLA for either Muhammad or Jordan Adams despite Adams being from VA. And while Muhammad is an NBA type talent, one maybe two years, and given Adams’, who may stay three, strength is outside shooting while its Muhammad’s weakness — of the two (are there any other elite three targets?)who is the better target for UCLA? Who is Coach Howland more likely pursuing? What other options will we see at the three (perhaps Lamb)?

Any word on Marcus Tuiasosopo? Graduate assistant? Intern? And will MT be involved with off-campus recruiting? (I think he could help recruit the state of Washington) Hawaii etc.

Any news regarding Marcus Tuisasosopo? Will he be a graduate assistant? intern? Will his position involve off-campus recruiting?

MRyer: You gotta get Benny to post a question for Jon … take him to lunch or something.

  • BruinBall

Is Josh Smith not considering entering the NBA draft at all?

Is Reeves Nelson considering the draft or something else (rumors of transferring) ? He’s a good college player, but I’m not sure he’s really NBA worthy.

What is the rule at UCLA regarding a donor stipulating that his $$ donation goes toward paying the salaries of coaches?

Have we produced any NFL offensive linemen in the last 10 years? I think our severe lack of olinemen is THE biggest reason football has been down the last 10 years.

How did Datone Jones look? Is he fully recovered from last season’s injury? Better than recovered?
