No Sweet 16 for UCLA women either

| | Comments (9) |

Neither UCLA team advances to Sweet 16, but the women had much tougher draw with Gonzaga in a home game in Spokane. The Zags lost 1 home game all season and upset UCLA, 89-75. Nikki Caldwell had said last week that the potential matchup with Gonzaga in Spokane was ''the most interesting'' thing the selection committee did. UCLA was disappointed with a No. 3 seed, but seeding didn't matter. The Zags will play in a Spokane regional, too, paving what could be the easiest path to the Final Four on the women's side.

Seriously? I still think the men's team had a tougher draw with No. 2 Florida in what was essentially a home game in Tampa than the women did with the No. 11 seed Zags.

Why is an 11 seed playing at home?????? That's a joke.

No upset here... Gonzaga was favored by 1.5 if you checked the online bookmakers

And Anon (above) is correct... something isnt right when an 11 seed gets such an advantage that they are favored to win over a 3 seed.

I don't care where they played...they should have been able to beat an 11-seed on any court. Sounds like the lady bruins psyched themselves out.

Semi-pro, would it matter if you knew the Zags were 28-4 heading into the tourney and ranked #17 nationally? They've won 31 of 32 games at home (lone loss to Stanford by 6) won 19 straight and the only reason they're ranked #11 is because they exchanged a higher ranking for the right to play at home?

Men's NCAA hoops is messed up, but women's is severely damaged. I don't know how they justify this as a fair decision.

Give our young ladies credit. They had a great season and are on their way to many successful seasons.

Completely overlooked amidst all the whining about the Lady Bruins' unfortunate draw was the amazing play of Gonzaga's point guard, Courtney Vandersloot (great name). Great handle, a blur in the open court, able to run the break or find open teammates in the halfcourt offense, snapping look-off chest passes with speed and accuracy. Knew when to look for her own shot as well. 29 points, 17 assists, 7 rebounds. Wow. Even though it killed the Bruins' season, it was fun to watch a good point guard dominate a game. Shows what our men's team was missing all season, with its two mediocre PGs.

Can't wait to see what the future holds for the ladies bball team. Recruit some trees and Cadwell will be hanging up that banner soon.

Nikki's landed a great recruiting class so far, "trees" included, and will be fine.
