All in a name

Since you'll probalby need to know how to pronounce receiver Devin Lucien's name this season, it's `Loo-see-en.'
``My teammates call me Luscious Loo-scious,'' Devin said.
And of course, if you still don't know how to pronounce Richard Brehaut's last name, it's Bree-ho. We still don't know if he'll be the starting quarterback, playing in a two-QB rotation or just the backup. Much to everyone's chagrin.

On the up-and-up, he's somethin' like a little pup,
Young and naive, it's hard to believe.
As long as you're strong, you can quest with the questers,
Jolly like a jumping bean or a jester.
Lucien, Lucien, Lucien, Lucien.
You should know!

Why does the announcer pronounce Joseph Fauria as Four-ee-ay? Is that the correct pronunciation?

Jill Painter Author Profile Page said:

I see how some of you are going to be. Just can't have any fun with you guys. This kid is going to be good. Might be good to know how to pronounce his name correctly. From now on, strictly news for you guys.

Sorry, were you interpreting my comment as snark? That was a genuine question.

Jill some of us like your fun posts! Don't read into random comments to much. Just do what you want to do.

Yes, it is pronounced FOUR-EE-AY. Most people say it wrong.

I got a good chuckle out of Luscious Loo-scious, Jill. Don't worry about the jerks.

One anonymous idiot does not represent this blog Jill. I, for one, would like some more Wolf-esque posts mixed in.

Jill, will you be reporting the closed scrimmage or is it closed to media as well?

I definitely appreciate the quick responses to the snarky questions. I don't know why some readers like to do that to you. I like your work and detail. It's nice to get a different perspective than Jon's.

Never mind the Ucla announcer, he is totally incapable of pronouncing any names correctly. Never mind that his call is late on every play and that he is incapable of identifying and naming formations correctly. What a shame.

How do you pronounce Prince?

Jill's Brain said:

Just think, IF Devin Lucien catches a lot of passes for UCLA this year and IF you pronounce his name correctly, Lucien could win the Heisman. Unlikely, yes, but never say never.

jill,
I have an investigative report idea for you, how about a breakdown on how many inside UCLA blog readers are complete DOUCHEBAGS??

Jill Painter Author Profile Page said:

Wow. I think you remember that word for word. Impressive.

No problem. The session was closed to the media, but one of our reporters was on the conference call. I'm covering Dodgers tonight.

Thanks for the info. It was interesting to me.

Not being snarky.

Big Joe's uncle Christian played TE here for the Pats for years and he is now a TV personality on a local NE station...

For his mouth to your eyes...he introduces himself as

Christian "4-E-A"

Big Uncle Christan may not know though. So we still all might be gettting it wrong.

Father Crespi from the grave said:

Little mike,

I don't think it a kindly and virtuous act to claim a graduate of the high school named after me could not pronounce his own name.

While young Christian ("young" relative to me, since I've been dead for almost 230 years) was not a Rhodes scholar in Encino or Boulder, he did have a long and lucrative career in the NFL coming away with money in the bank, no apparent dementia, and the wit and intelligence to host a television program in the 5th largest American media market.

There is no reason to impugn the man. I'm sure that if you could find a native speaking Italian in greater Los Angeles, he or she would assure you that Joe, Uncle Christian and great-grandfather Guido know/knew how to pronounce their surname.

Perhaps it was the mick (no pun intended) immigrant agent at Ellis Island who butchered the spelling making it difficult for other ethnic groups to correctly pronunciate the name.

Now go...and sin no more!

Respectfully,

Fr. Crespi
