Cid cleared to practice

Citrus College transfer Albert Cid has been cleared by admissions to practice and will begin today with the Bruins, the school announced.

Cid instantly figures into the offensive line equation with Jeff Baca sidelined until at least week five, and it will be interesting to see where he starts off today. He could have an Eddie Williams-like effect on the team, as Williams came in and started for the Bruins for two years after transferring in. With Cid in the mix, UCLA has a little more flexibility, and when Baca is finally healthy, the Bruins should have a relatively solid eight-man rotation, which Bob Palcic covets.

Cid is ready to play. I expect him to start at right guard. He can maul and drive people out the way with a lot of passion and toughness. Huge get. Just wait and see.

Griffith needs to get bigger.

However, it's only good until the injuries start to happen. And, if history is an indicator, there will be injuries and there goes the depth...

What I find amusing is that this Juco transfer is considered ready to go yet others already on the team are considered inexperienced. So does playing in Juco games against inferior opponents make you more experienced then those that have gone up against their UCLA teammates? So basically playing in games is the key however if you are never given an opportunity for game time minutes then you are considered inferior. Doesn't quite seem right.

Anonymous,

I wouldn't say that playing games (whether Juco or Div 1) is the only criteria for saying someone is ready to go. Part of it, especially for an offensive lineman, is the physical maturity of their body. Some folks have hit the weight room harder than others and some have a natural ability. Others take a longer time, which is why you often have fifth year senior offensive linemen who have played for only a year or two.
