Ruffman Recruiting Report - Chat with Darius Powe

| | Comments (4) |

During the past two recruiting classes, UCLA has only brought in just one wide receiver
prospect, freshman Devin Lucien.

With seniors Taylor Embree, Nelson Rosario and Josh Smith set to graduate, UCLA will look to bring in at least two wide receiver signees come February.

One of the top targets on their radar is Lakewood (Calif.) prospect Darius Powe, a big, physical receiver - something that UCLA will need once Embree and Rosario depart.

As a junior, Powe had 822 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver while doubling as a safety, where he accumulated 38 tackles and two interceptions.

Powe is rated as the 85th overall prospect and 13th best receiver by ESPN, the No. 84 wide receiver by Scout.com and the No. 38 receiver by Rivals.com.

Campus Correspondent Jacob Ruffman caught up with him and had a chat about his
recruitment after the jump and here's some video...

Jacob Ruffman: Your season started last week, talk about that game a little bit.
Darius Powe: It's going well, we're 1-0. The wideouts did well this past week and
our goal is to try and open up the running game and if they don't cover us we'll keep slinging it.

JR: Which teams are on your list?
DP: UCLA, Michigan, Oregon State, Utah, Colorado and Cal are the main schools I'm looking at.

JR: Do you plan on taking visits during the season?
DP: "Yeah, I think I'm going to try and get one or two out of the way during the
season and do the rest after."

JR: What schools will land officials?
DP: "Michigan and Utah will get one. UCLA will probably get one too because it's a lot easier to plan then the other ones."

JR: What is your timetable for a decision?
DP: "I'm going to announce at the Under Armor Game in January."

JR: What will be the biggest factors in your decision?
DP: "Academics, how the offense runs, the coaching staff and the location are the big factors for me."

JR: Who is recruiting you at UCLA?
DP: "Coach Johnson is the one recruiting me to UCLA and our relationship is good. He's just telling me to give them a try. I watched the UCLA game this past weekend and I liked the offense a lot, I liked the flow."

JR: You have a fellow teammate, Malik Gilmore, committed to Oregon State and a
former teammate, Torain White, at UCLA, will those connections play a part in your
decision?

DP: No sir, it's all on me.

How can there be such a disparity among these three 'professional' recruiting benchmarkers???

Although I wouldn't consider myself a "numbers guy," I suspect these services are pertetrating on the minds of the college football fans!

Perpetrating what?

We guess you're not much of a "writing guy" either. Read our book, young man and finish your thoughts within your sentences!

I gentiluomini,

For those of you who do read Italian:

Gentlemen,

While I don't consider myself a "numbers guy," I do consider myself a master of language, unfortunately that language is Italian.

I suggest that you two dead purveyors of English grammar spend less time reading sports blogs, and more time just being dead.
