Artis reportedly decommits from UCLA

Multiple outlets including, CBS’ Jeff Borzello, are reporting that point guard Dominic Artis has de-committed from UCLA and will explore his options, though he has the Bruins among his favorites.

Artis’ uncle told Borzello that he “felt like he rushed into his commitment” and has been “thinking for a while now.” On the heels of Kyle Anderson’s verbal commitment, this is obviously a blow, particularly as UCLA has a need at point guard going forward.

Artis rode a hot hand throughout the summer all the way to the No. 9 ranking in the country at the point guard spot and he committed to UCLA originally in July. The Bruins have commitments from Jordan Adams and Anderson and recently hosted center Tony Parker for an official visit. The main target, Shabazz Muhammad, has said he’s waiting until the spring to decide on his destination.

Oh…this is bad. How many kids re-commit after withdrawing their initial verbal commitment?

  • mindshed

    23.457% with an error of +/- 0.58%

Does Kyle Anderson’s commitment have anything to do with this? It’s known KA has some good handles. Does Artis view KA as competition as a ball-handler?

  • anon

KA is most likely a one and done anyway, artis would have had at least two maybe three years to compete, i doubt it was for that reason (KA playing point forward) We had a guy like that a few years back by the name of cedric boseman. from what i read KA is much more polished and complete. i am just worried that josh smith and reeves nelson leave next year, thank God for the wear twins

Who cares about this 5-11 smurf Artis? Kyle Anderson & Larry Drew II will handle the point! KA will be thrilled about this. Shabazz & Parker will be coming, so we still will have the #1 ranked class in the nation by far!

I couldn’t have said it better Scott.

  • ANON

WHY ARE WE SO FIXED ON HAVING THE #1 RECRUITING CLASS WHEN ALL OF OUR STUDS WILL BE ONE AND DONE, HURTING THE TEAM IN THE LONG RUN? I WOULD RATHER HAVE A MIDDLE OF THE PACK RECRUITING CLASS AND HAVE THEM COACHED UP FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS THEN BE TOP NOTCH PERFORMERS. WHY ARE WE INFATUATED WITH THE AWE OF A #1 RECRUITING CLASS THAT LEAVES THE MOMENT THE SEASON ENDS? NY NO MEANS AM I NOT WELCOMING KA OR SHABAZ ETC, BUT ARTIS COULD HAVE PLAYED A HUGE ROLE SITTING BEHIND DREW III THEN TAKING OVER WHEN HE IS GONE.

Artis was lightly rated, may be because of this size, when he committed to UCLA, just to keep a spot for himself at UCLA. Now that he’s highly rated he wants to “explore” his options and feel some of the LOVE that the other recruits are getting from other programs.

Scott is giving all UCLA fans named Scott a bad name. DA was a huge get for the Bruins in a position of constant need. He has great handles and makes great distributing the ball. Didn’t you see the mixtape Jon posted when he committed?

Here’s why I don’t care what happens with the guy: He verbally committed, so Howland and UCLA may have stopped recruiting the position, then he changed his mind leaving Howland and UCLA hanging and having to look for another point guard. If I were Howland, I would tell the guy his scholarship is off the table, and, as far as he is concerned, the guy is not “exploring”; he is looking for another school. Use the scholarship on Shabazz or Parker or any of the other big names. Also, I’ll take the top recruiting class for a year, if it is going to win a national championship. On the other hand, it may be Howland who “suggested” the guy look elsewhere knowing he has someone better in the wings.

  • Semi-Pro

It’s pretty clear that this kid de-committed because he doesn’t want to share the ball with guys like KA and maybe Shabazz. He wants to go to a place where he can be THE GUY and showcase his skills.

In all reality though we really could have used him to gaurd the other teams quick gaurds when coaches pull that old Small Group on the floor go fast tempo!! I beleive Drew only has next year and Artis really looked like the Ankle Breaker real deal. I know KA is Awsome and will be the starting point next year but this does hurt. Lets hope he is just looking for love and will come back. (there is no such thing as too much talent).

Anon at 11:01 #1 recruiting classes dont = immediate championships (see kentucky last 2 years and ucla 3 years ago) even when fla had the #1 recruiting class they had 5 seniors win them back to back titles. These one and dones dont bring championships ( with the exception of melo at cuse) but even he had a supporting cast that came up huge. just getting KA and Shabaz would be amazing, no doubt but if they are one and done then dont expect another banner at pauley. hopefully we can keep these guys for more than one year (a la kemba walker, kyle singler, the whole starting 5 for fla in 06, 07 etc)

Semi-Pro must be making $$ as a psychic since he knows so definitely what’s in the kid’s mind.

  • Scott

It’s a whole new world now! One & done’s are normal. Why worry about who our PG will be in 2013? We are UCLA and we will have our new amazing Pauley Pavilion! The recruits “get it” why don’t some of you? We will just reload with more stud one & done’s IF needed!! Go Bruins!

  • BruinPain

It’s amazing to hear what our resident psychics have to say about what they seem to know what’s going on our recruits’ and prospects’ minds.

Dominic Artis will hopefully re-commit to UCLA since he is a great talent at the point. BTW, he has grown to 6’1″. I believe that Coach Howland will still land an excellent recruiting class and address all needs. What I’m not going to do is bash some 16 or 17 year old kid trying to make up his mind.

  • JL

Cannot believe Bruin fans said welcome him back or he should come back.

CBH is known for recruiting players with strong character. Do you think players who give commitment and then revoked them later, does that show good character?

If a bride changes her mind and say I prefer to look for choices now which include you bride too, should he marry her still?

If CBH wants him back, that mean Coach has lowered his personal standard for winning.

  • bibs

Please do not attempt to sign this player.Once a player chooses to go back on his word it shows his lack of integrity and we don’t want him.

  • ucla-of-the-rockies

The mad skills of Tyler Trapani finally scared him away.

    WORD! ;o)

SCOTT, SINCE ITS A WHOLE NEW WORLD NOW NAME ME THE LAST TIME A ONE AND DONE TEAM TOOK THE TITLE. MELO DID IT AT CUSE BUT THAT WAS ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO, I FAIL TO SEE HOW THIS NEW. WE DONT KNOW THAT KA AND WHO EVER WE END UP WITH WILL ACTUALLY BE ONE AND DONES! I WAS SIMPLY ILLUSTRATING HOW ONE AND DONES ARE GREAT BUT WE CANNOT EXPECT TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH THEM. THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF A TEAM BUT YOU STILL NEED VETERAN LEADERSHIP

  • Stan Hasiak

Committing, de-committing, then re-committing? Worked out well for me didn’t it?
