COACHING
F--
At some point, UCLA has to change how it practices, game-plans and, well...everything

As much I wanted RN to succeed, last night's game pretty much sealed the coach's faith...
For the first time in 30 years I turned off the TV before the end of an UCLA game and went sleep.
I had Prince rated higher. I think that the overthrow was more that Smith cut off the wheel route and Prince was leading him. One TD is not good but he did pass for almost 300 yards and tied for leading rusher (inauspicious, granted. He cannot help fumbles, drops, and penalties that killed drives. I also like how he bee-lined for Embree to try and keep the fight from escalating. Too late but he showed leadership. I have him at B-/B
I concur, PV Bruin. Neu and Dorrell both bleed Bruin blue and gold. Nobody wants them to fail. But they have.
Last night was UCLA football's rock bottom -- on national TV. Hopefully nobody was watching a 3-3 team take on a 1-5 team during the World Series.
Pure and utter humiliation through and through. I couldn't sleep last night. I care too much about my alma mater and its teams. But I can't take this anymore. It's time I stop my codependent relationship with Bruin football in this era. I too turned off the game. Hurt me to do it, but I had to to start the healing. I have to admit I have a problem first. And that problem is my intense love of UCLA football so long as it continues to hurt me and all of us alumni.
I wanted CRN to be the right coach, but obviously we need to change everything just like John wrote.
I don't know if this loss is worse than the Miami game that cost us the shot at the national championship, but it is more embarrassing than any loss I can remember and I have been a UCLA fan for over 30 years.
We need get a coach that can totally change the mindset of the program and take away the entitlement these player have of not performing and still getting playing time.
@anon1057: Sorry, but we don't have a "B" player, coach or administrator right now.
Jon: "F" for "fair" again. I can't believe it's for everything this time, instead of just one unit.
OK, I'm NEVER gonna say "Oh well, we've got hoops ..." No, I bleed too much Bruin for that.
So, to lighten it up ...
Please give us the response in the press box when the brawl broke out. Did you have a good vantage point?
Sorry we suck so bad. Bet you wish you were covering things 2 hrs. south again.
Hey, we at least got Tebow starting Sunday! Uhhhh, OK, maybe lets wait and see how that goes.
Up to this point in Rickie's UCLA coaching career, I have been supportive and always hoping that he'd get the team to turn the corner...
...last night was the clincher. The team certainly turned the corner, but it was down Loser's Alley!
My boy should have remained in the pros as a position coach. While he has a certain charisma for college-ball recruiting, he out-and-out can't game plan or coach on the collegiate level anymore.
The TV shots of him and his Defensive Coach ("genius") on the sidelines said it all...the looks on their faces painted the picture that they were both out of their depth.
The bad news...the team won't win another game, sans Colorado. On the upside, Little Rickie won't be "Stoopes" and will play out the string. Even I can't imagine that he'll retain his job.
It's one thing for UCLA to be in the middle of the Pac-12 football pack, it's quite another to take on the mantle of being the "gimme game" for the other teams.
After you're bloodied by the USC game, Rick, come home to Phoenix for a visit.
For the first time last night I saw the diehard believers begin to fracture. People who have had nothing but faith have given up. And with the performance on the field last night, you almost wonder if this team has given up too.
You look at the schedule and 6-6 is still there. But it's hard to believe this team could beat anyone. It's going to be a very interesting sight in the Rose Bowl next week for a lot of reasons. Can we rebound and begin to try and salvage the season? Will anyone even bother to come watch?
Rick NEEDS to go. Sorry bud but times up.
so he can go play golf at Bel Air CC or Augusta...and give UCLA to another coach to try and lead.
Count on every team from here on out being ultra-fired up when they play us; we're now the one team even the lowliest of other teams believe they can beat, and rightly so.
Coaches need to go, and these kids need someone to come in and kick the ever-loving shit out of them to knock a sense of pride and urgency into their thick heads and make them actually care about representing UCLA as a Bruins football player.
Maybe rescind a couple scholarships, even; that'll teach em! :)
Grades seem accurate. I imaine the only reason special teams got a passing grade is they had to field kickoffs six times in the first half! Every time the camera showed Rick on the sideline he looked absolutely clueless. J. Tressey - where to start with him. Having the DBs play 10 yds off the receivers every game? Really? I can imagine what Rick and Jim are saying now - "we held Arizona to two field goals in the second half." As for the pistol, it simply stinks and is wrong for UCLA. The motion man does nothing. Go back to a pro set or spread offense to let these kids use their athletic ability. No doubt UCLA has athletes on the team, but the coaches need to lead and provide them input and knowledge so each can perform to the best or beyond their individual abilities, which Rick has simply not done at all. I bet if Dan G. spoke to any of the players they would say that they have no confidence in Rick and his staff. I am hoping for some respectable games the remainder of the year simply for pride but no matter what the outcome, Rick and his staff must go.
Nothng will change, no matter the coach, until the decision-makers at UCLA decide that enough is enough and make a new comittment to the football program. The talent is overrated by the fans as well as the reporters covering them. Worst of all, the CULTURE OF THE PROGRAM OVERALL is soft. This is the truth, end of story.
Mike Leach.
I'm on my way to Tucson...
Foles put 44 on SC. I think Foles fouled up ucla last night, the bruins putting too much emphasis on the pass, and thus letting the 'Cats run wild.
But ever see a team look terrible one week and then bounce back with a good game the following week. They get Cal, so I bet they're favored.
Also, looking at the schedule 6-6 looks quite possible, and ASU is at the Rose Bowl, so who knows.
Wouldn't it be funny if this team wins the South, and Rick gets a new contract.
Dorrell's last season was at 6-6. Rick will need to win out the remainder of the games in order to keep his job.
Mike Leach would make a huge difference. Especially, with attracting QBs.
One thing I can't figure out is why UCLA can't get a high caliber QB? It used to be UCLA was a QB school!
UCLA had QBs like Aikman, Maddox, and McNown. Any QB drafted in the last decade?
Going to the pistol doesn't help at all. I know Norm Chow didn't work out. That was sad...it should have.
Painful, especially since I remember the days of Freeman McNeil, Troy Aikman, Gaston Green, Kenny Easley, and even Dokie Williams.
We used to be NFL factory both on offense and defense.
What happened to the QBs and the D?!
Wings:
What are you talking about? We have two 4* and one 5* Star QB on the roster right now. Bottom line, we can't Coach anybody. Don't blame the players. Enough of this already. Even Neu will finally admit this. Outside of maybe Oregon and SUC, there is nobody who has brought in more talent the last 4 years than us. We play SOFT. Our coaches can't develope our talent. Schools everywhere would love to have the talent we do. Ask them. We are like Michigan under Rich Rod.
The STUPIDITY and STUBBORNESS of this coaching staff baffles me. We try and play like we are a POWER FB team, when we are anything but. We are clearly a Finesse team who should be playing as fast as we can. Our coaches suffer from brain freeze. Neu looks like he is still learning on the job after 20 plus years in the business.
"Wouldn't it be funny if this team wins the South, and Rick gets a new contract."
The joke would be on your fanbase.
"What are you talking about? We have two 4* and one 5* Star QB on the roster right now. Bottom line, we can't Coach anybody."
I have to agree. The recruiting has been good. The roster is stacked with players a lot of other programs wanted.
The problem is this:
1) The coaching staff has not developed anyone at any position for the most part. Certainly the QB development was slowed by the fact that Neuheisel could not ever pick one guy and go with him. And once he finally did (ie Prince,) he picked the wrong guy. (Admittedly, I was one of the fans thinking Prince was the right guy up until the 2nd half of the Houston game)
2) He has been unable to select a decent DC since Walker left. In fact, you might say he has selected incredibly sub-marginal DCs.
3) He decided to completely change his offense to a quirky WAC offense that he and his coaches had no idea how to run. Only now is he figuring this out after a year and a half. He seemed to think, "gee, that looks like it works in the WAC, so it would probably work against SC. And if WAC coaches can run it, how hard can it be?"
Big mistake there.
The Legendary Resume of Coach Neuheisal:
Univ of Colorado - Left Program in Ruins
Univ of Washington - Left Program in Ruins and Sanctions
UCLA - Left Bruins in Ruins
AD Guerrero says my job is safe. Next year contract extension with that $20M in TV money. Whoo- hoo
I was only going to see the 1st half and record the 2nd. But I gave up at the first fumble and didn't bother with the recording.
We anticipated a great defense this year but it's invisible. And the play calling is a mystery. I notice that every team we play has prepared on both sides of the ball to show something we don't expect. Yet we seem to hold to some narrow, don't-take-chances scheme. I have no idea how to coach but I think I could do this well.
I also wanted CRN to succeed here but it seems like he's in way over his head. And I do take Jon seriously when he says to manage our expectations. I wonder if this game is the disaster that would get RN fired mid-season. I'd like to see UCLA replace the AD, CRN, and the whole defensive staff.
Where are Bob and all those other numb nuts who gave me hell for highly criticizing the Tresey hire? How's that Kool Aid?
Don't you get a zero if you don't turn in any work? An F- seems generous for the effort from the coaching staff.
Sideline during the game:CRN "Why does your defense suck so bad!!!" Joe Tresey "I have no idea coach, I'm clueless" CRN "Me too" Tresey "What do we do now?" CRN "I'll look pissed, and you look embarrassed" Tresey "OK, got it"
So, contrary to what most people think there is some coaching taking place during games...
Good point Timmah!
WE ALL STAND CORRECTED!!!:)
Most likely scenario now is another 4-8 season. Cal= loss. ASU= loss. Utah=loss. Colorado=win. USC= loss.
Heard the University has changed its stance and will allow alums to donate to help with coach salary... true?
