Weekly Answers, Pt. 8

Check out the latest batch of weekly answers...

1) Is it just me or do think when Brehaut runs with the ball he is doing so with apprehension, not conviction and commitment? - Bob
I wouldn't say apprehension, but he's definitely not fluid yet.

2) What do you do to maximize the responsiveness of players and, in particular, the coaching staff to your questions? Does it require them to be familiar with you? Do you need to demonstrate a certain level of understanding about their job? Do you feel you need to work to gain their trust before they will open up to you? - Rob
All of that is true. The oldest players on the team I've now covered for three years, so there is a level of familiarity. But remember, these are college kids. They are not polished in any way. Some give better answers than others, but compared to pro players, there's no comparison. Likewise, high school to college, there's no comparison. But a common gripe is with my asking long questions, and that is a result of knowing who a lot of these kids are and knowing the kinds of answers they'll give. I ask Tony Dye different questions than Eric Kendricks. Unfortunately, with the restriction on how many we can interview on a given day, I have to use video interviews for my print quotes too, so it takes away from the video experience. But ultimately, the goal is to get the kids to open up, and yes, everything you mention plays a factor in that.

3) How's (basketball) Josh Smith doing pre-season? I've heard bits here and there about how he's gained weight rather than losing it. If so, any thoughts on how that could have happened given all the negative attention and obvious negative repercussions? - Wyatt
He's come in about 10 pounds lighter than the end of last year, and with a preseason to work himself into better shape, he could actually be down to around 300 by the time the season rolls around. That's not a bad number for a guy his build, and he does appear more solid than last year.

4) What's your take on the Dominic Artis situation? - Spencer
From the outside looking in, completely and utterly understandable. A sad byproduct of the hype machine, probably for both sides, but a reality in 2011. The kid absolutely exploded onto the scene, committed super quickly and then got justifiably freaked by the Anderson love. This is not a unique phenomenon. UCLA has players who were committed to other schools, too. As a coach, all you can do is hope to not burn a bridge.

5) What about this senario - Brehaut heals in 3 weeks takes the ASU week to get sharp again. And is ready to play against Utah.. Does Neu let him come back to the starting spot the way he has done with Prince so many times? Will he take the starting spot away from Bre after saying many times that he earned it because he was out for 3 to 4 weeks? I am wondering if the double standard will come into play? Will Bre have to wait and win it back yet again? Any thoughts? - Steve Finanilo
That is probably a nightmare scenario for Neuheisel. It very well could come into play, and it will again be an awkward situation.

Re #5. You can't possibly answer that question in a vacuum.

I personally feel that both QB's are fairly equal. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

If P looks hesitant, doesn't appear prepared or comfortable and holds the ball too long while not playing well the next three games much like B has in the past when P has been injured then B should start again when he comes back.

If P plays great in the next three games and we will all of those games then P should continue to play.

Word from Dominic Artis' mom one week ago was that UCLA was still his favorite school. DA is visiting Oregon this weekend. Quiet period right now, coaches cannot comment on prospects. DA's mom also said that idea is to commit during the early signing period next month. So we'll see how this all turns out but mom says that CBH remains in constant contact with DA.
