DevilsDigest.com is reporting that Arizona State offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone is heading to UCLA to become its new offensive coordinator. Still working on getting it confirmed from the UCLA side - a source said it's close - but this has been in the works for a while now and should be done soon.
Mazzone has extensive experience, both in college and the pros, and he's largely credited for turning around the Arizona State offense quickly with Brock Osweiler.
mazzone has served as offensive coordinator at Mississippi, Auburn, Oregon State, North Carolina State, again at Mississippi and then the Sun Devils, whom he led to the No. 11 passing offense, No. 25 scoring offense and No. 26 total offense.
While Jim L. Mora's first few hires - Adrian Klemm, Steve Broussard and Demetrice Martin - have been primarily lauded for their recruiting abilities and relationships, Mazzone's hire would lend a major boost to game-planning and scheming, particularly with his recent success at Arizona State.

Getting my hopes up. Is this premature??
As Jon says, DevilsDigest is the one source that's on record: https://twitter.com/#!/DevilsDigest/status/147030052977127425
Every one else is saying basically what Jon is. Things are moving in that direction, but nothing is done yet.
Well, we know the man can recruit assistant coaches.
Or, what do these assistant coaches know that we don't know?
Mazzone already listed as UCLA's OC on his Wikipedia page..........man those dudes move fast:

So I guess Johnson isn't likely to be around next season as a holdover at OC.
Johnson could stay as the WR coach. I like the guy and hope he hangs around in some capacity or another. The offense improved some this year too....
Don't blame the ASU assistants for wanting to jump on board while in limbo waiting for a new HC to arrive in Tempe.
From what I've read about his stops over the years, he puts a premium on passing efficiency but not at the expense of the running game. He appears to run a pro-style system but will incorporate spread and up-tempo elements as well. Very curious to see what he can do with our quarterbacks. IMO, the early edge would be to Brehaut as the better passer over Prince as this is no longer a run-first Pistol system, but Hundley could close the gap fast if he improves as a passer and masters Mazzone's scheme.
Go Bruins!
@ BruinBall and captainqtp: Agree it would be great to have MJ stay around in some capacity but wonder if he told Mora that if his alma mater Akron offers the HC job, he'd probably take it.
Great, the spread offense attack is coming to Westwood. It's what my Trojans have been gearing up the past year and next year to shutdown....

Some little-known facts about The Monopoly Is Over Here:
1. 42 years old, still lives with Mommy and Daddy.
2. Never went to SUC, because
3. Never finished high school.
4. However, hopes that 4th attempt at the GED exam is
successful. Results are pending!
5. Refers to "my Trojans" despite fact that pinnacle of
personal athletic success was achieved in a game of
four-square in third grade.
6. Looking forward to 2012 as the year "I finally get my
first job!" not involving burgers.
7. Has nothing better to do than troll pathetically
and illiterately on a UCLA blog.
If anybody else has any facts to add to this list, please feel free.
Remember last year when XCRN took about a month to decide who he was gonna fire and blame for sucking last season, and then another month to figure out what assistants to hire for blame this season. There's one thing for certain, CJLM doesn't sit around strumming his gUItar like XCRN did. Finally, a man of action leading our Bruins.
Although, this guy from ASU was behind all the success in Tempe... All the success with the Sun Devils amounted to a 6-6 season this year and no bowl last season.
Go Bruins!!!! Beat $UC at the air hockey tournament tonite.
Yes ASU was 6-6 last year, but... in their 6 losses, they still averaged 27 points per game. UCLA also went 6-6 and only averaged 24 points per game for the entire season. For an offensive coordinator, sounds like his team was scoring enough to keep the team in the game, not blown out early and often.

If you actually did your research, you'd see that Mazzone's offense is less "spread" and closer to the One Back offense of 90's Wazzu and "Fab Five" fame. Yes, they're in the gun, and part of his "run game" involves the flaring back out of a two back set (that was Jamal Miles at ASU this past year), but really the concepts aren't all that different, at least passing wise. Best part about it is, it allows Brehaut and Prince to drop back and let it fly without, say, having to worry about running the veer and zone-read option and risking injury (though I think we should definitely keep the pistol concepts to take advantage of Hundley's athleticism).
One thing to watch out for is how the linemen adjust. From what I've read, Mazzone's blocking schemes are a little unorthodox in terms of how he handles his inside and outside zone...
Mazzone is a great hire. Both Brehaut and Prince, aided by better O-line play, will do much better than in previous years. I'm still pinning my hopes on Hundley stepping up and taking over very soon. He's the Real Deal.
I couldn't find the report on devildigest. Weird.
Sounds like the gap is closing again... ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Hey SleepyLaBeef (fruity nickname btw) don't forget #8: to torment already bitter bruins and remind them daily that "The Monopoly is Over Here".....
Oh one other thing, the clowns above keep mentioning these QB's Dicky Brehaut and K. Prince? But i've been searching all over the internet for these guys and all I find are Fawn Kneed Losers...
