Mora's Reinforcements: Pt. 2

| | Comments (10) |

Jim L. Mora clearly knew he needed some help.

Within a span of three days, Mora hired five assistant coaches to be a part of the new UCLA coaching staff in Adrian Klemm, Inoke Breckterfield Steve Broussard, Demetrice Martin and Marques Tuiasosopo. With the Pac-12 expertise of Broussard and Martin and the recruiting bonafides of Klemm, there is no question that all three new coaches were brought in to help Mora adjust to the college football, specifically recruiting.

Tabbed as a lifelong 'NFL guy', Mora enters college football with his only college coaching experience coming as a graduate assistant in 1984 at the University of Washington. This means that he arrives in Westwood with very few connections to local high schools and their coaches. Enter the reinforcements.

After the jump, Inside UCLA Campus Correspondent Jacob Ruffman breaks down some of UCLA's new staff, and the recruiting implications of the hires...

Demetrice Martin: Defensive Backs and DEFENSIVE passing game coordinator

Martin is the third recruiting ace brought on by Mora in just the first few days. Martin, like Broussard and Klemm, has excellent ties to Southern California. He graduated from Muir High School in Pasadena, CA and started his coaching career at Monrovia High School. He then worked as the secondary coach at Pasadena City College and Mt. Sac before joining USC as a graduate assistant in 2006. Martin has spent the past three years at Washington where he has specialized in recruiting Southern California. Martin is now considered one of the top recruiters in the Pac-12 and will be a very formidable addition to the staff.

In the current recruiting cycle, Martin was involved with the recruitments of several prospects that UCLA covets. Wide receiver Kenny Lawler has very close ties to Martin as he was in charge of recruiting Lawler to Washington. In fact, Martin held an in-home visit with Lawler just over a week ago. Lawler currently has California leading his list but with the additions of Broussard and Martin, and Cal already having four committed receivers, the pendulum could tilt toward UCLA.

One major recruit that Martin was also the lead recruiter for while at Washington was CB Kevon Seymour from Martin's alma mater, Muir High School. Seymour, who was on UCLA's campus on Saturday, is considered one of the top two or three corners on the west coast this season. Seymour was considered a lock to USC for quite some time but overtures from Martin and the Huskies had him looking very hard at Washington. Seymour had already been considering UCLA and his twin brother Keon is a highly touted baseball recruit who is being recruited by UCLA. Seymour is a top-tier player, and with UCLA being fairly thin at corner, his services would be more than welcome.

Martin was also the lead recruiter for several other top secondary prospects like four-star cornerback Brandon Beaver from Dominguez High, three-star cornerback Bryan Harper from Colony High in Ontario and five-star safety Shaquille Thompson from Grant High School in Sacramento. Beaver was a one-time UCLA silent commit as well as a Washington commit thanks in large part to Martin. Harper was a Washington commit but he holds a UCLA offer and could reopen his recruitment with Martin in Los Angeles.

One note for the 2013 recruiting cycle is that Dashon Hunt, a current UCLA commit who recently led Westlake High School to a CIF-SS Championship by scoring five touchdowns, was being recruited to Washington by Martin. Hunt was offered by UCLA as a cornerback and he currently holds one other offer from Washington where, of course, Martin was the lead recruiter. Hunt will be one of the top players in California next year and could be one of the top defensive backs in the nation, so the addition of Martin could pay major dividends in holding onto Hunt.

Marques Tuiasosopo: Tight Ends
Tuiasosopo is the first coach retained by Mora from last year's UCLA staff. Tuiasosopo worked at Washington, his alma mater, as an assistant strength coach for a couple of seasons before joining UCLA last year as an offensive intern. Tuiasosopo spent eight years in the NFL as a quarterback and spent the majority of his time as a backup on the Raiders after being selected in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2001. Because of Tuiasosopo's role as an intern last year, he was unable to help in recruiting, but his experience as a player will undoubtedly serve him well with recruits. Also, he is only 32 years old and that should give him the kind of energy necessary to be a successful recruiter.

For this recruiting cycle, Tuiasosopo will most likely work in a role assisting other coaches with contact.

While these hires will serve Mora well in the recruiting game, he has shown that he will be a force on the recruiting trail as well. On his first night he made calls to several UCLA commits and top prospects and most notably locked up an in-home visit with the No. 1 overall prospect defensive end Arik Armstead. In fact, Mora traveled to the Sacramento area on Friday to visit with several prospects including Armstead, four-star cornerback Marcus Rios - who committed to UCLA on Sunday - three-star OT Steven Moore, three-star DE Nate Iese and Thompson. He then returned to Los Angeles where hosted a litany of visitors on Saturday including verbal commits in linebacker Aaron Porter, defensive back Jericho Richardson and cornerback Shannon Edwards and uncommitted prospects like five-star defensive tackle Ellie McCarthy, 2013 offensive tackle John Lopez, offensive tackle Colby Cyburt and others.

Retaining Inoke Breckterfield, author of last season's
ineffectual powder puff defensive line appears to be a lazy, clueless move by a coach that is purporting to breath new life into a derelict program...Could this be the First of many disappointments to come from a guy with no college head coaching experience and with a downward spiral of NFL losing seasons as a career "resume"?

Anon 12:26,

The poor play of the defensive line last season was more product of Joe Tresey's scheme than anything else, as well as the poor gap control by the linebackers on the second level. The defense rarely rushed more than 4 players. 4 players trying to rush the QB against 5-6 blockers each play is not going to bring much pressure. And if you think that the d-linemen weren't strong enough or in good enough shape, well, isn't that the Strength and Conditioning coach's job?

Also, the d-line significantly improved over the course of the season. That couldn't possibly be due to good coaching...

BruinNation is saying that Noel Mazzone is signed on as our OC. Is that confirmed by Coach Moara? I think that making his hiring official, and having him contact recruits after ASU's bowl game will do more to change the football team's image and attract young talent that will fit into a pro style offense.

The front four got no pressure at all, bring in a real line coach.

I'd like to see news about quarterback recruits. We'll to nowhere without a great quarterback. I hope this contingent of former Washington University coaches can do a great job getting us champion quarterbacks for years to come.

Most of these comments leave me shaking my head. Are most of these comments coming from ex players or coaches regarding the hiring of IB? I would go out on a limb and say no...(sarcasm). Blaming the DL coach after one year with a soft DC shows no brains or lack of knowledge of the game. Here's a quick crash course. If a QB is releasing the ball quickly and the Corners are playing off, how is a D lineman going to bring pressure? Did you not watch the games? good coaches game plan and it worked all year against our Defense, so know it's on our DL coach and it's his fault? Learn the game and read football 101 before you make yourself sound ignorant.

Bruin Gold: We have the number 2 rated QB from last year's recruiting class who redshirted this year. If you recall he had an injury and surgery that set him back. Next year he will most likely be our QB with 4 years to play.

bruin91 - Totally agree. Bottom line is we have solid talent across the board. We are thin in some areas like DB and DL and OL. We will have a few of our WR's graduate after this year (good riddance). But overall... Very solid talent.

Recruiting was not Neuheisals problem - Coaching (scheming), Motivating and developing were. I like the aggressiveness of our new staff. Kids want to be inspired. You dont inspire them by being conservative and waiting for things to happen. you go out and seize the day! Here is to a Big 2012 - and Kicking some SUC butt!! GO BRUINS!!
