UCLA v. Oregon Report Card

| | Comments (27) |

RESULT: Oregon 49, UCLA 31
RECORD: 6-7
WEEK 13 GPA: C

QUARTERBACKS
C
Kevin Prince took a pounding but was simply not efficient enough.

RUNNING BACKS
D
Derrick Coleman deserves a B, but Johnathan Franklin's two fumbles drop the score.

WIDE RECEIVERS
B
Have to wonder how good Nelson Rosario could be with 100 percent focus.

OFFENSIVE LINE
C
Cut down on penalties but Prince often had to run for his life.

DEFENSIVE LINE
D
Darron Thomas' relative inaccuracy was negated by all his time in the pocket.

LINEBACKERS
B
Patrick Larimore's interception return for touchdown was a thing of beauty.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
C
Once more, is it the scheme or the players? Either way, Ducks found the seams.

SPECIAL TEAMS
B
Tyler Gonzalez's 44-yard field goal continued his feel-good story.

COACHING
B
Perhaps for the first time this season, Bruins rised to the level of their opponents.

Defensive backs, F. I saw Hester once, beaten for a TD that the receiver dropped. I saw Tevin somehow screw up on 5 of the first 6 tds. He is sitting 15 yards back on the snap, the guy runs a post, no where to be found. Guy goes around right end, Tevin blocked, walks in. Tevin takes a fake to a bunched up left side, too slow to catch the Qb gliding by him for a longish TD. Tevin has a free shot on a screen, ends up lying the ground at the feet of the receiver, 25 yards to the 5. Rb runs between the guard and tackle on the left side, only see Tevin's number after the guy is walking back to the sidelines after a 50 yard run. Hey the only positives, the Pass Interference twins didn't commit any, I as sure that was a first.

So Jon. Who do you think out next coach is?

Anonymous's observations point to preparation, and that points to the coaches.

Too little to late. There are no moral victories in big time collegiate athletics, but if you read any of the other blogs and pages you'd think the Bruins won. Aside from a few good plays, this team got manhandled again and they were constantly out of position or just not strong enough, fast enough, or athletic enough to get it done. I really hate to criticize players but they are adults on California PAID scholarships so here it is: Nelson Rosario you are an enigma and it is a tragedy that you only display your talent one-fourth of the time. You could be great but you will end up a perennial practice squad player in the NFL because you don't have what takes mentally to be great. Here's to next year and finding the next Danny Farmer and James Washington.

JG, you have a soft spot for RN which is why you gave coaching an average grade. Coaching gets an F. Tressey has to be the worst DC in the history of football.

Franklin's paddlehands drive me absolutely nuts. Kid's got talent, but he must learn to hold onto the ball.

Seems there may be a few nestorites roaming these posts. Hysteria abound!

LOL

Jon. What would you think of UCLA expanding their search? I'd like them to interview Kirby Smart. What would you think of a move like that?

Thanks.

The Nestorite UCLA fans are the worst. They talk about "commitment to excellence" and not tolerating mediocrity, etc...but then their solution is to blow everything up, start from scratch, and expect immediate success. Rinse and repeat if things don't work out. Sorry, but that's not how real programs are built.

I'm (unfortunately) an Oakland Raider fan as well...and I can tell you that is EXACTLY how the Raiders operate. How's that model for success been working out for them? Please, UCLA fans...don't let us be like the Raiders.

Real winning programs are built slowly through patience, consistency, growth, and realistic expectations and goals. Not by blowing everything up every 4 years.

Yes, we RISED to the occasion against the Quack.

Only at UCLA is a 17 point loss treated like a victory, Oregon went on 4th down almost every time and could have gone up 31 with 5 minutes left and then spent the last minutes in the game celebrating while UCLA played like it mattered..ugh what a mess

All anyone can ask is the players on the field play to the best of her ability. Players have to play hard and the coaches have to out hem in the best scheme/situation to succeed. What we have witnessed over the last two years is neither of both.

On Friday, we saw players play hard and the coaches scheme as best they can. It may not have been the best result, but if was fitting way to end this era.

There are a lot of excellent up and comers or assistants in CFB for us to choose from. The way I see it though, if we are willing to offer Petersen 4 mil per and 3 mil for assistants then we need to continue at that level. Unfortunately, there aren't many available in college that warrant that price tag. I think that UCLA needs to get in contact with some NFL guys and offer that kind of money. Here are the candidates who should be on our radar; Herman Edwards, Jeff Fisher and Del Rio(even though they are $C guys we need to consider them, Norton coached at $C) Brian Billick, Josh McDaniels, Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan, Jim Mora Jr., Mike Singletary, and at least make a call to Jon gruden and Bill Cowher. Some of these guys likely wouldn't even consider UCLA, but if we are willing to offer this kind of $$$, we must do our due diligence and at least find out.

When will we hear about a bowl game?

I hope Franklin gets demoted next year. Yes he is a good runner but never very dependable. I want to see Malcom Jones get a "real" shot to prove himself. Also if Hundley is not starting, there will be blood on the streets in Westwood!!!!!

Now that's insulting!

Terry Donahue - UCLA Football's WINNINGEST COACH - said something profound in today's LA Times:

The NUMBER ONE PRIORITY for UCLA is to obtain a GREAT QUARTERBACK. WITHOUT A GREAT QUARTERBACK, THEN NO MATTER WHAT COACH IS BROUGHT INTO UCLA, UCLA IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO LOSE.

If anything, this is THE ONE FAILING of Rick Neuheisel, Karl Dorrell, and Bob Toledo - the coaches who came after Terry Donahue.

Terry pointed out that if any of USC's previous star quarterbacks were in a UCLA uniform, UCLA would have beaten USC with UCLA's current roster of players. All one has to do is insert a great quarterback into UCLA's team, and UCLA WINS.

Such is the state of college football. The absolutely more important position - quarterback - is the one that has to be stocked with great players. You simply cannot win in the NCAA without a great quarterback. You have NO HOPE - according to Terry Donahue - of winning a BCS championship without a great quarterback.

It all boils down to that.

And for that, UCLA has to recruit throughout the country, spending everything it can, to get that great quarterback. The run of mediocre or good quarterbacks we have had MUST END. We have to have a great quarterback. UCLA WILL HAVE TO SPEND FOR IT.

It doesn't matter what athletic director we have, or great coach we have, or players we have or assistant coaches we have, field or equipment we have.

IF WE DO NOT HAVE A GREAT QUARTERBACK, UCLA HAS NO CHANCE. UCLA WILL NEVER WIN. PERIOD.

THAT IS PROFOUND.

Thanks, Terry Donahue - the John Wooden of UCLA Football.

Perhaps young Hundley will bring some speed and
excitement to the backfield ,I would also like to
see M. Jones and J. James in the backfield at the same time, not that I am a great coach, but hey a little Oregon
speed could not hurt. Or about this, just some kids who really want to play, for every 6 who hustle 5 do not.

Bruin Gold said:

The only question is: Is Hundley a GREAT QUARTERBACK????

That is the only question that counts.

If Hundley is NOT a great quarterback, then UCLA has ZERO CHANCE OF WINNING - not matter who the coach is.

Realize that Phil Jackson couldn't win without the horses - Michael Jordan, Kobe, Shaq.

Wooden couldn't win without the horses - Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Bill Walton.

Winning in college football means having a GREAT QUARTERBACK. According to Terry Donahue - the John Wooden of UCLA Football - UCLA CANNOT WIN WITHOUT A GREAT QUARTERBACK, no matter who is coaching.

As I have said for years, UCLA doesn't and did not have the horses to win for over the past 10 years. And winning starts and ends with the quarterback.

Wow... I'm not going to argue with Terry Donahue, but "The John Wooden of Football"?? I think John Wooden is owed a major apology. How many national championships did Donahue win in his tenure?? Based on that measuring stick donahue couldn't wash Coach's car, let alone be compared to him.
